Shrine clubs for years havebeen a way to further extend the fellowship of our fraternity.Clubs are localized to certain communities, making it moreconvenient for our nobles and their ladies to gather andsocialize on a more frequent basis. Membership is open toany noble; you are welcome to join any shrine club you wishregardless of your home location. Shrine clubs generally meetin the Fall, Winter, and Spring, moving functions outside forthe summer months. Membership is extended to brand newnobles for no dues assessment during their first calendar yearas a shriner. Many newer members do not get the opportunityto experience all that the fraternity has to offer, these clubmeetings are a great way to meet fellow nobles and ladies. This article should stand as an open invitation to all noblesnot currently a member of a shrine club to seek out their localgroup, contact the person listed in this article and join in thecamaraderie. WINTER 2019-2020KORA SANDSFROM THE DESKOF THE POTENTATEby Illustrious Potentate Richard HersomBack in January when I was tasked with the Potentates positionagain I knew this would be a challenge. I had been away from theKora Divan and units for the past 4 years and I really didn’t knowwhat to expect. I am happy to say that throughout this year I haveseen great strides made within Kora. The units and clubs, the eventcommittees, and all the ladies have come together as a community. This is how Kora should be and by coming together as a unit, manymore things can be achieved. All the events so far this year have ended on a positive noteand I know this will continue throughout the coming years. Yourincoming Divan has proven to be capable and willing to supportall the Nobles of Kora. Please welcome them and use them as aresource.Lady Liz and I would like to thank you for all your support andfor making our job easier. We have all worked hard this year and itshows. I would like to again thank you all for a great 2019. Best ofluck to you all your endeavors.FaithfullyIll. Richard Hersom 2015 & 2019FROM THE RECORDER’S DESK by John R. Knox, P.P., RecorderGreetings Nobles:As we rapidly approach the end of theShrine Year, I can truly say “Time Flies especially as one gets older”. Serving in theoffice of Recorder for Kora Shriners is an honorand privilege. Our Nobles and Ladies are committed to servingthe organization in support of the fraternal activities, and in the4support of our philanthropy, Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, asevidenced by results of our fundraising activities throughout theyear. Great job!One important aspect of our ability to continue to havesuccessful events is always to be working on MEMBERSHIP. ImperialPotentate Jeffrey Sowder has focused on membership with his“JUST ONE” campaign – if each member brought in “JUST ONE” newcandidate, think of the positive growth we could experience. It isentirely possible and doable.I would urge all Nobles and Ladies to be active in the upcomingevents – the Feztival of Trees – both in Lewiston and a new satellitelocation at Sunday River Ski Resort in December, as well as the endof season and end of the year Unit and Club events.Invite a Master Mason to one of these events and let him see firsthand that ours is a fraternity of fun, fellowship, and philanthropy.A final note, please be sure to submit your dues paymentsbefore the end of the year. You will need your 2020 MembershipCard to participate in events in the New Year – and if you havenot yet submitted your 2019 payments, please do so as soon aspossible. If there are extenuating circumstances that may impactyour immediate payment, please contact the Recorder – there aremeans available to assist Nobles to get through a challenge. Don’thesitate to let me know – we do not want to lose any Noble fornon-payment. Assisting a Brother in need is a vital tenet of ourorganization.Stay safe and stay healthy in the upcoming Holiday Season!Fraternally, John R. Knox, P.P., RecorderMEMBERSHIP RAMBLINGSBy Paul Gardner, Membership ChairParade season may be over, but there is still much to keep usvery busy. Your Membership Committee has been hard at work, and at our Fall Ceremonial we welcomed six new Nobles to ourKora family. We also recognized several nobles who have dedicated50 years of service to Kora. As in the past, we will continue to haveCold Sands ceremonies when needed, so that new nobles canbecome active as soon as possible.Membership numbers are looking good for the year so far.It looks like we will exceed the numbers for last year, not only increations, but also restorations. Projected NPD suspensions arebelow last year as well. There are still quite a few Nobles who are“lost in the desert.” We haven’t heard from these folks and theyare at risk of being suspended. Perhaps you are aware of one?Encourage them to contact the membership committee or theKora office. There are still tickets available for the Membership committee’s“Rifle Raffle.” You could be the lucky winner of a Henry Shriner’sTribute edition .22 rifle. Don’t be left out! See a committee memberor the Kora Office to get your tickets. Whether you are a shooter ornot, this is a really nice addition to any Shriner’s collection. Sinceonly 300 tickets will be sold, odds of winning are pretty good.Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder’s membership campaign is picking upspeed. “Just One.” A simple but powerful idea drives this initiative:If every current Shriner commits to recruiting or restoring “JustOne” noble to our temple, the ranks of our brotherhood will swelltremendously.207-782-6831

WINTER 2019-2020KORA SANDSSHRINERS HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN BOSTONKenia's storyKenia, 21, came to the Boston Shriners Hospital from El Salvadorwhen she was only 12 years old after suffering severe burns froman accident involving loose wires at the mall. Even though it wasmany years ago, she remembers the event and the experiencesthat followed quite vividly.Upon her arrival at the hospital, Kenia was rushed into surgeryfor an emergency amputation of her arm. Her mother remainedglued to her side the whole time. “Of course, as mothers are, shetried to protect me and wrapped a blanket around me, so I couldn’tsee [my amputated arm]. But when they moved me from one bedto the other, the sheet fell off and I saw myself. So in the beginning,I didn’t want anyone to talk or look at me — only my mom,” Keniashared. Kenia felt she would be ostracized as a result of her injury.Kenia’s mother was also severely impacted by the accident,as her sadness made her almost unrecognizable to her daughter.Kenia’s bravery, however, kept them both strong through thejourney. Another supportive figure in this difficult time was Kenia’sdoctor, Joseph Upton, M.D. Dr. Upton was there every step of theway during her treatment. Every time she would cry, he would finda way to reassure and comfort her.“I have really developed and progressed since the accident. Ididn’t think I’d be able to live in the same way, or do the things Iloved anymore like basketball or dance. I stopped riding my bike. Ididn’t think I’d be able to drive on my own, put on makeup, or dressmyself. But now, I can do all of that,” said Kenia.
