Inclement Weather Days, Delayed Openingsand CancellationsElementary Schools and Early Childhood Centers2021-2022PREPARATIONIn preparation for the upcoming school year, please review the following informationwith your staff, students, and parents. It is also suggested that you share thisinformation in newsletters and various other ways throughout the school year.DELAYED OPENINGS MORNING Half-day PEEP classes will not be held when there is a delayed opening. AFTERNOON classes WILL be held if the opening of school is delayed.NOTIFICATION OF DELAYED OPENINGS & CANCELLATIONSWhen it is determined that schools will be closed or delayed in opening, CommunityRelations will do everything possible to make the announcements as early as possible.Transportation personnel drive the streets starting at about 3 a.m. to determine safetyconditions. NNPS will try to have a decision by 6 a.m. so that local television and radiostations can make the announcement. Please remember that a closing/delayed openingdecision cannot be made on the basis of a forecast alone – conditions must be evaluated.For the most reliable and timely information, please check the Information Line (283-7810),the NNPS website at nnschools.org, or NNPS-TV on Cox 47 and Verizon FiOs 17. NNPSfamilies and staff will also receive notification through the telephone communicationsystem.It is important that you review the attached School Board Procedure EBCE-P withall staff members so that they know what to do in these various situations.

Procedures: EBCE-PSchool and Facility Closings& Delayed OpeningsThe following procedures apply to the emergency closing or delayed opening of schools and foremployee attendance during these modified school division operations. These procedures will bereviewed and updated as needed.Emergency Closings and Delayed OpeningsThe school division strives to make a decision to close early, open late, or cancel school as early asconditions allow, so that employees, students, and parents can be notified as soon as possible.If it is necessary to dismiss school early because of emergency weather conditions, the normal orderof dismissal will prevail. Each principal will clearly explain the early dismissal procedures to parents,to include the importance of keeping emergency numbers up to date, and urge that they makeprovision for the care of their child in case they are not home when the child arrives.TEN- AND ELEVEN-MONTH PERSONNELDelayed Opening1. The reporting time for ten- and eleven-month employees (except cafeteria and keytransportation personnel) is adjusted by the same number of hours as the student reporting time.2. Cafeteria personnel report as soon as possible in order to prepare lunch. Breakfast is not servedon days of delayed openings.3. Morning half-day PEEP classes will NOT be held when there is a delayed opening.4. Afternoon half-day PEEP classes WILL be held when there is a delayed opening.School Cancellation1. If school is canceled, all schools shall be closed for the day.2. Ten- and eleven-month employees do not report to work unless the superintendent deems itnecessary to use the day as a make-up teacher work day in order to avoid weekend or holiday makeup workdays.Early DismissalUnless otherwise directed, the dismissal time for ten- and eleven-month employees (exceptcafeteria, transportation, custodial, clerical, and administrative personnel) is adjusted by the samenumber of hours that students are dismissed early.

Procedures: EBCE-PSchool and Facility Closings& Delayed OpeningsTwelve-Month PersonnelDelayed OpeningAll twelve-month personnel (other than custodial, transportation, and plant services personnel) areto report to work as soon as reasonably possible given the conditions at the time.School Cancellation1. When schools are closed all offices are open unless the closing of offices is specified.2. All twelve-month employees report unless otherwise specified.Early DismissalIn the event of early dismissal of students, twelve-month employees and all cafeteria, custodial,transportation, clerical and administrative personnel will work their regular schedule unlessotherwise notified by their supervisor.Custodial, Transportation and Plant Services PersonnelTwelve-month day custodial, transportation, and plant services personnel will report at the regulartime if other twelve-month day personnel are to report at any time during the day. They then willbe provided appropriate compensatory time based on the number of reduced hours for othertwelve-month day employees.Twelve-month night custodians, transportation night monitors, and plant services night shiftemployees will report at noon if students are not in school and at their regular time if students are inschool.Emergency Closing of a Single School or a Small Group of Schools1. The superintendent or designee will make the decision to approve the closing of an individualschool or a small group of schools, which may be necessitated due to local emergency conditions.Executive directors and principals will contact Transportation to make the necessary arrangementsto take the students home. Principals of elementary schools shall make every effort to contactparents and shall make arrangements to provide for children who do not have emergency care.Schools should indicate the emergency closing location or pairing of schools for emergencies intheir emergency operations plans (i.e. emergency that occurs en route to school).2. School employees will be assigned as needed to facilitate the alternate arrangements.
