We pioneered the model of multidisciplinary holistic advocacy that is consideredbest practice in children’s legal services today.VisionAll children should be raised in a safe, stable, and nurturing environment with equal access tomeaningful education and other services that are necessary to thrive and grow. Our youth deservepositive alternatives to unnecessary placement in foster care, juvenile justice facilities, and immigrationdetention.ApproachOur young clients may be assigned by the court, referred by a caring adult, or they may come to us ontheir own, via a phone call or by visiting a drop-in clinic. When we open a case, we assign an attorneyand social worker who function as a team and tap into diverse community resources to addressthe interconnecting concerns of every client—legal, physical, social, psychological, economic, andeducational. We empower our young clients to take active roles in their cases and the critical decisionsthat affect their lives. Our ClientsEach year we respond to 1,500 requests for information and referrals, and handle over 500 newlyopened or continuing client cases involving foster care, guardianship, emancipation, school expulsion, and immigration matters. The majority of our clients are children of color and half speak a primarylanguage other than English.

Home, Stability, Family, Respect, Equity, Safety, Community, Generosity, Hope, Opportunity, Justice, Advocacy, Leadership HomLEGAL SERVICES FOR CHILDRENLEADERSHIP AWARD HONOREE8Toni RembeRetired Partner, Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLPPresident, van Löben Sels/RembeRock FoundationAs an attorney, Toni Rembe is a trailblazer – the first female partner ata major law firm, a director on international corporate boards, and anawards recipient several times over for her influential and savvy businessexpertise. But her commitment to helping disfranchised individuals andcommunities has shined just as bright and made a significant impact herein the Bay Area and beyond. Hailing from Seattle, Toni worked hard toclimb the ladder in a male-dominated profession. She began her tenure atPillsbury, Madison & Sutro (now Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP)in 1964 and was pleasantly surprised to feel the support of the partners and encouragement of her growingexpertise in tax practice. In 1971, Toni became the first female partner at Pillsbury Winthrop. She remainedwith the firm until her retirement in December 2004, representing a number of major corporations on Federaland California tax matters with special emphasis in the construction industry and international tax planning.Never one to stop broadening her horizons, Toni joined her first corporate board of directors in her late 30s– which opened doors to other opportunities on the boards of AT&T, AEGON N.V., and Transamerica. She’sbeen a steady voice advocating for more diversity in law firms and corporate boards for decades now. She hasalso served as a mentor to young women lawyers and as an occasional bridge between female and male colleagues. Her advice for women is to support each other and to find their voices. “Women have smaller voiceboxes,” she commented in September 2011 for The Reporter. “I used to talk too rapidly thinking nobodywanted to hear what I had to say Then I learned to just take a deep breath — and do it.” Her voice and determination led her to a Sandra Day O’Connor Board Excellence Award in 2008, and being named one of the100 Most Influential Women in Business by the San Francisco Business Times in 2005.

shiphip Home, Stability, Family, Respect, Equity, Safety, Community, Generosity, Hope, Opportunity, Justice, Advocacy, LeadershipLEADERSHIP AWARD HONOREEToni’s advocacy for women and equality in the workplace helped shape her philanthropic ventures, includingher current involvement with the van Löben Sels/RembeRock Foundation. As president of this private foundation, she has helped thousands of underserved residents and communities in Northern California. Foundedthrough the will of Ernst van Löben Sels after his death in 1965, Toni has been a director on the Board sinceday one and has served as chair since 1994. Under her leadership, the foundation’s focus on public interestlaw, juvenile justice reform, incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women, and community-based programsin remote, rural communities has been daringly progressive. Today the foundation contributes over 2 million annually to organizations providing services ranging from housing for homeless teens to educationalopportunities for incarcerated adults to free legal and social work services for low-income children. LSC isgrateful to have been a partner of the van Löben Sels/RembeRock Foundation from our earliest days whenthe Ernest D. van Löben Sels Charitable Foundation stepped up in 1975, providing seed monies to our newlyincorporated organization when it was the emerging vision of our founder, Carole Brill.Toni is also a director and former board chair of Presidio Graduate School and co-founder and advisoryboard member of the Arthur and Toni Rembe Rock Center for Corporate Governance at Stanford University. In addition, she held the titles of president for The Commonwealth Club of California and co-chair ofWomen Corporate Directors International. The staff and Board of LSC are proud to present our LeadershipAward to Toni Rembe, in recognition of her extraordinary life’s work as a philanthropist and leader, promoting social justice through both public interest law and education.AN EVENING WITH LSCToni Rembe, continued9

Whatever thenature of the case or the situation of the client, each of these attorneys has made a life-changing contributionto the well-being of a child and we are proud to salute them today.Rebecca Marie Biernet is an attorney in Tucker Ellis LLP’s Trial Department. She lives in San Francisco with her husband, 18-monthold daughter Rachel, and 8-year-old stepson Jack. When not at one of Jack’s soccer games, the family can befound biking through Golden Gate Park and playing at Ocean Beach.Stephen Johnson is a partner in the San Francisco office of Nixon Peabody, where heheads its Aviation Litigation Team. The guardianship was obtained and the girls, who are excellentstudents, were able to remain in their local schools.
