NTDCSCORINGThe driver with the highest total score in each class is declared the class champion. In addition, Nebraska recognizes agrand champion and a rookie of the year. A perfect score is 500 points. Drivers earn points in four separate tests:written examination.80 pointspersonal interview.40 pointspre-trip inspection.80 pointsdriving test.300 pointsTEAMSThere must be a minimum of three drivers in order to qualify as a team. The team score will consist of the total of all teammembers’ scores divided by the number of drivers on that team.OTHER AWARDS Professional Excellence Award—highest score on the written test. Kurt Everett Vehicle Condition Award —highest score on the pre-trip inspection. (Named in memory of formerChampionships Steering Committee member.) Bucky Buchholz Top Driver Award —highest score on the driving test. (Named in memory of State Patrol officer andformer Championships Steering Committee member.) Jerry Wessel Award—rated the highest by championships officials on professionalism, industry knowledge and attitude.Nominees have competed or volunteered at the Nebraska Truck Driving Championships for at least five years. (Namedin honor of Jerry Wessel for his outstanding work as course designer and volunteer for the event.)DRIVING TESTThere are six driving problems designed to simulate everyday challenges in safe vehicle operation. Each problem is valuedat 50 points. Contestants must complete each one without striking a barricade, running over a boundary or making anunauthorized stop. The time limit for step van and straight truck contestants on the course is eight minutes; for tractor-trailer contestants,10 minutes. Points are subtracted from the driver’s score if he or she goes over the time limit. Some of the problems require the driver to bring the vehicle within a certain distance of a measuring point. The scoreearned is based on the following distances from the measuring point:0-6 inches. 50 points6-9 inches. 45 points9-12 inches. 40 points12-15 inches. 35 points15-18 inches. 30 pointsover 18 inches.no scoreThe scores displayed on the driving course are not official. These scores may be effected by penalties, such as notwearing a seat belt, which are not reflected in the problem scores or on the scoreboard.FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSQ. Why is the written test so difficult?A. The written test is designed to be challenging. The test writersare trying to prepare drivers to do well at the national competition.Nebraska’s test is prepared to reflect the difficulty of the test atnationals. Each of the questions on the written test comes fromthe 2019 Facts for Drivers and and current events from NebraskaTrucking Association Good to Know e-news.Q. How are the “planted” defects determined for pre-trip?A. The pre-trip coordinators try to come up with defects that adriver might encounter on the job. Some of them may be easy to8spot, while some are probably a little more difficult. Typically, driverswho do routine inspections on a daily basis score better on this partof the test than drivers who do not.Q. How can I tell the competitors competing in special categories?A. The nametags are color coordinated for easy recognition.Rookie* Red dot - Wessel** Blue dot*Rookie: Driver competing for the first time in ANY truck drivingchampionships.**Jerry Wessel Candidate: Driver has competed or volunteered atthe Nebraska Truck Driving Championships for at least five years.
