FROM THE LEADERSHIP CIRCLE“ The magi, as you know, were wise men—wonderfullywise men—who brought gifts to the Babe in themanger. They invented the art of giving Christmaspresents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wiseones, possibly bearing the privilege of exchange incase of duplication.”So begins the last paragraph of O. Henry’sfamous story, “The Gift of the Magi.” It is abeautiful story of gift giving. One, I think, thatshould be read every Christmas before onedoes gift giving. It is about planning and loveand sacrifice. It is no accident that our editorial teamchose to depict the Magi with an UrsulineSister for the cover of this issue of the Dome, because this issue is dedicated to you, thebenefactors of the Ursuline Sisters and ourministries. It is dedicated to all of you whosupport us with gifts that reflect planning, love and sacrifice, and who support us withtime, talent and treasure. Like the Magi, youare wonderfully wise people—people whobring gifts to the ministry of the UrsulineSisters so that we in turn can bring the giftof the Gospel to others through our prayers, works and suffering. What a wonderful wayfor all of us to be connected. And speaking of being connected, I readrecently that Archbishop Desmond Tutu oncesaid, “Do your little bit of good where you are;it's those little bits of good put together thatoverwhelm the world.”And so together let us each in our own way doour little bit of good no matter if it be time, talentor treasure; or prayer, works or suffering so thattogether we can overwhelm the world. Thanks for being ourfriends and benefactors.God be with you in everyway. You are our gift.Sister Janet Marie Peterworth, OSUPresident, Ursuline Sisters of LouisvilleLeft to Right:Sister Rita Dressman,Will H.,Sister Loretta Guenther,Barret U.,Tristan J. andSister Jane Stuckenborgwith our “Gift of the Magi.”DOME WINTER 20173

Stories of GivingIn this issue, we will be sharing several stories of giving of time, talent and treasure, and one of giving yourself the gift of restand reflection. Please know we give thanks for all of you!“ Faith without works is dead.” James 2:14)by Sr. Janet Marie PeterworthThis verse is the driving force behind Charles “Bud”and Barbara (Hagan) Simmons who have shared theirtime, talent and treasure with the Ursuline Sisters formany years. Both Bud and Barb are products of Catholiceducation in Louisville. Barb attended Angela MericiHigh School while Bud went to St. Xavier High School.Barb went on to Bellarmine-Ursuline College, thenreceived her master’s from Western Kentucky University.Bud attended St. Meinrad and graduated from IndianaUniversity and the University of Louisville.Charles “Bud” and Barbara (Hagan) Simmons, longtimevolunteers and donors to the Ursuline SistersOver the last 30 years, these Ursuline friends havecontributed financially in, as Barb put it, “many shapesand sizes to annual funds, capital campaigns, Interludesand various other campus fund drives.” After 28 yearsof teaching in Catholic elementary schools, Barb taughttheology for 20 more years at Sacred Heart Academy. She still substitutes today when she is needed. Bud hada career in the banking industry.OUR GIFTS FROM DONORS: July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017Wanda AbellLoretta AberliGeorge O. feature story: GivingAs Barb got more and more involved at SacredHeart Academy, she became moderator of theCommunity Action Club, a responsibility she heldfor 12 years. She encouraged her students to visit theUrsuline Sisters at Marian Home nursing facility, where the students read to the sisters, prayed withthem and engaged them in conversation. One of Barb’sfondest memories of visiting Marian Home wassinging Christmas carols. Barb remembers, “The girlssaid they were not very good singers, but they sang sobeautifully. Just listening to them brought tears to myeyes. They were such fine young women.”At the request of Sr. Brendan Conlon and Sr. JanetMarie Peterworth, Barb started the AppalachianWest Virginia, where I worked for 15 years. She was anangel. The toy drive just kept growing over those years. It was such a blessing.”Barb’s interest in Appalachia did not end with thetoy drive, however. She held a prom dress-sharingevent for Christian Help one spring that enabled girlsin Kermit who could not afford prom dressesto have a dress they could be proud to wear to prom.Barb also encouraged girls to help with ABLE Families’summer camps, a sister organization of Christian Helplocated in Kermit and run by Sr. Janet Marie.Barb’s interest in Appalachia was infectious. Barbrecalls, “Ruth (Dilger) Kelly (another theology teacherat SHA) and I took a group of students to work with“ I don’t know what we would have done without Barb and her enthusiasmfor this toy drive. She was an angel. The toy drive just kept growing overthose years. It was such a blessing.” —Sr. Brendan ConlonChristmas Toy Drive, in conjunction with the agency,Christian Help. The Christmas Toy Drive, now in its22nd year, has become a staple for all of the SacredHeart Schools on the Ursuline Campus. Sr. Brendanreflects, “I don’t know what we would have donewithout Barb and her enthusiasm for this toy drive. She gave tirelessly of herself: organizing, deliveringand helping with the distribution of the toys in Kermit, the Appalachian Service Project one summer. That wasa really good experience. We hammered and paintedand learned a lot about building and getting dirty andsweaty that year.”The connection with Appalachia continues.According to Amy Olson, Director of MissionEffectiveness at Sacred Heart Schools, the Toy DriveOUR GIFTS FROM DONORS:Gerald CampbellJanet CampisanoAnn CanadayGloria CapelPhillip and Lynndee CaputBetty and Perry CarneyMarcia CarothersBarbara CarpenterWalton and Monica CarpenterCatherine CarricoEugene and Delores CartaMary Charlotte CaseCharlotte CashinPatricia CasilloAlvin CassidySteve and Pam CatlettNell CecilMarjorie CessnaPatricia ChervenakKenneth and Bonnie ChesterLeo and Rita ChicoBarbara ClarkMartha ClarkMary Susan ClarkPeggy ClarkMarlene ClarkeClass Act Federal Credit UnionJoan ClemRita Agnes CliffordJill ClodfelterElizabeth ColeCatherine ColletClara ColletSandra CollinsPatricia ColumbusJ. couple guided and encouraged their own childrento pursue their education. Today their children, Benand Katie, are building up and nourishing others withtheir gifts. Ben is an architect with EOP Architect inLouisville, and Katie is a personal chef and owner ofPlants Rule in Chicago. And now it seems that goodworks and generosity have been passed on to the nextgeneration of Simmons because Ben, the architect, isalready doing pro-bono work for Nativity Academy inLouisville. To borrow an old saying, “The acorn does notfall far from the tree.”is now called the Gift Drive as it has been expandedto include hats, gloves and sweatshirts, so that teensmay receive gifts as well. Last year, over 2,700 giftswere sent to Kermit via the Gift Drive. Sacred HeartAcademy students continue to return to Kermit duringthe summer to help with summer camps, and wereinspired in June 2017 to start Camp Kermit, to whichthey invited children from Kermit to the UrsulineCampus in Louisville for summer camp.Of course, while Barb was offering her talentand time to various school activities, she and Budwere rearing two children. “Bud was so helpful withmanaging our home and the children while I wasdoing all these other things. His time and talent weremy support and that has meant so much to me.” TheOUR GIFTS FROM DONORS:Lana Kelly FitzgeraldAlice and James FitzpatrickNatalie FitzsimmonsDr. Paul and Elizabeth FleitzTom and Maureen FlynnStephen and Linda FontanelliCatherine FordDennis and Beth FordF. ASSOCIATECOMMUNITYNEWSursuline inspiredGivingA 69-year Friendship of Giving with “Sister”by kathy williamsWhen Mary Lou Williams Mangold was just sixyears old and about to enter the first grade at St. Georgein Louisville, her mother took her to the convent tomeet her teacher, Sister Carmelita Grantz, so shewouldn’t be so scared on the first day of school. Littledid she know it was her teacher’s very first year of“ We were both sort of in the sameboat—my first day of school andSister’s first day of teaching!”teaching, and as Mary Lou states it, “We were both sortof in the same boat—my first day of school and Sister’sfirst day of teaching!”Mary Lou’s family moved three months later to St.Martin parish, but she and Sr. Carmelita kept in touch.Sr. Carmelita even kept tabs on Mary Lou’s academicprogress. Mary Lou recently found a letter from herthird grade school year from Sr. Carmelita (who wasteaching in Nebraska at the time) stating that she wasproud of her for doing such excellent work!big kick out of hearing me say that.” In Sr. Carmelita’sfinal years at Nazareth Home-Clifton, Mary Lou wouldonly have to say that to remind Sister gently who shewas when she visited.During one visit, Mary Lou said to Sister Carmelita,“Can you believe we have known each other for 69 longyears?” Sister responded by saying, “Yes, it’s amazing. And in my mind, I can still see that shy little girl whenwe were standing in front of St. George church, holdingher Mama’s hand so tightly that first day we met.”What an iconic image that memory paints!Mary Lou says, “If I live to be a thousand years old, Iwill never forget or stop loving Sr. Carmelita. Knowingher will always be one of the highlights of my life.”Sister Carmelita Grantz passed away on June 20, 2011.Mary Lou jokes, “I always told her that SHE taughtMary Lou continues to honor her former teacher andme EVERYTHING I know during my first three months friend’s memory by donating faithfully every month toin her first grade class at St. George. She always got athe Ursuline Sisters of Louisville in her memory.OUR GIFTS FROM DONORS:Mike JonesNancy JonesVicki JonesJones, Nale & Mattingly PLCK of C Ushers AssociationJohn and Elizabeth Ann KaelinJudith KaleherRosalie and Carroll KamerDavid and Nanette KaufmanCharles and ChristyKavanaughMartha Lee KeelyKathleen KelleyMargaret KellyRuth KellyKaren KeltyPaul Kelty, MDJane KempTom Kennedy and ElaineWoernerJohn and Mary Kay KenyonCarmel KesslerJanet and Ron KettererEileen and Carl KiddFrank and Donna KileyRoger and Katharine KillenLouis and Mildred KillmeierDoris Marie KingJean H. associate community: GivingBarb MercerAssociate, Donor, Volunteerby bAY BALTESFrom membership in the Associate Community,to donating money to the Ursuline Sisters, orvolunteering in a variety of capacities on campusand off, Barb Mercer truly believes in giving her time, talent and treasure to the Ursulines and the largercommunity.Barb first became acquainted with the UrsulineSisters of Louisville as a grade school student at HolyTrinity parish school in Louisville in the 1960s. Sheloved the time she spent as a student there. Barb washappily anticipating attending Ursuline Academy forhigh school when her family moved to Crestwood inOldham County and the length of the daily commuteproved a barrier to her attending Ursuline Academy. So, it became Oldham County High School (OCHS) allthe way for Barb! After moving back to Louisville about 10 years ago,Barb was invited by a fellow parishioner at St. Peterthe Apostle Church to consider joining the UrsulineAssociate Community. She jumped at the chanceto become a lay associate of the sisters she had sorevered as a grade school student, and in August 2008signed her initial covenant.Joining the Associate Community has given Barbopportunities to donate both time and treasure to thesisters. Since 2008, she has been an active participantin many associate activities and gatherings, includingserving on the advisory board, participating in a smallreflection group and regularly attending “Liturgy andLunch” every third Thursday. The associates also partner with EvangelTabernacle church of Louisville each year duringAdvent to decorate Christmas stockings for childrenwho have a parent incarcerated in a Kentucky prison.Barb is a stalwart decorator of stockings for thisecumenical project to help spread Christmas cheerto these families.Barb has participated in retreats and SabbathMoments sponsored by our Angela Merici CenterOUR GIFTS FROM DONORS:Kathryn MattinglyThomas MattinglyWilliam MattinglyBarbara MayerRomano MazzoliMary Ruth McClishAnne McCollomAnn Marie and TimothyMcCormickKate McCormickDolores Jean McCroryRuth McCulloughMary Suzanne McCuneKathleen McHughLucille McIntyreKelly and Ellen McKnightBob and Judy McMillenKaren MedleyGeneva MeehanRandall MehlHarris MeimanFred and Carol Meirose8Jesse MendezBarbara MercerMichael and Ann MarieMercurioJoann MeredithBeverly MetzlerThe Bill and Becky MeyerGiving FundGail Ann MeyerSusan MeyerAnna Marie MichaelJudy MichelsBruce and Louise MillerMary MillerNorwood and Jean MarieMiller, Jr.Patricia Bernardi MillerRoberta MillerRuth Ann MillerWilliam and Sandi MillerWilliam and Karen MintonJeanne and Joseph MitchoSusan MolonyWINTER 2017 DOMEMary Stephanie MolterShirley MongeSharron MonroeElizabeth MontgomeryMary Ann MoranNellie MoreschiSusan MoriartyJoseph and Catherine MortonCharlotte MoseleyMotorists Mutual InsuranceCompanyAl Mueller, IIIGretchen MuellerJim and Ruth MuellerLouise MulhallThomas MullaneyWilliam and Stella MullerEdna MulliganMary MulliganSteve MullinsVirginia MutschlerGayle MyersJane Ellen MyersLinda MyersDenise MytychGeorgette MytychNanz & Kraft FloristNAPIANCAADavid NeillRadetta NemcoskyKathleen NemesDolores NevittLarry and Mary Belle NewbyDiana NewmanJulia NgMary NichterJoan NitzkenMel and Jeannine NixBrigid NoonanVonda Lea NorrisLizanne O’BryanNorma OesweinGerry and Carol O’FarrellHuberta OgburnJoann O’KeefeJim and Naomi Olges, Sr.William F. peruvian journal: GivingPeruvian Journal: Javier Tenorioby sr. sue scharfenbergerAllow me to introduce you to Javier Tenorio. We andeveryone else here call him “Ricce.”In order to get to know Javier, you need to knowthat he is the son of Dominga Sernaque, a woman whowas very active in her parish preparing parents tohave their children baptized, working in human rightsorganizations on the local and national level, and aperson who was there whenever help was needed.Javier learned all this and more from his mother. Hefirst sold newspapers with her when he was a little boyand later helped her sell fish in the market. She was thesole provider for a family of eight. From Dominga, Javier learned to work—workhard and find opportunities to make connections andbuild friendships. He began working in our schoolafter graduation, first by teaching carpentry, a skillhe learned in the parish workshops. Then, little bylittle and winning the confidence of the parents, theprincipal and other teachers, Javier gained more workhours and a slightly better salary, which he then used toearn a university teacher’s degree.OUR GIFTS FROM DONORS:Regina C.
