Doctor of Juridical Science inEnvironmental LawThe Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) in Environmental Law is a graduateresearch degree intended to prepare legal scholars to research, publish andteach in the field of environmental law, whether in the United States orelsewhere in the world.Candidates for the SJD work under close faculty supervision to research,write and defend a publishable doctoral dissertation that creates originalknowledge about their chosen topics in environmental law. The SJDprogram requires at least one academic year in residence at Pace Law.THE SJD PROGRAMITSELF CONSISTSOF FOUR STAGESPRELIMINARY COURSEWORK STAGEDISSERTATION STAGECONTINUATION STAGEDISSERTATION DEFENSE AND COMPLETION STAGE

Graduate FellowshipsGraduate Fellows in Environmental Law work part-time for anenvironmental program or center at Pace Law, and receive a fulltuition scholarship for the LLM in Environmental Law plus a modeststipend to help cover living expenses.Graduate Fellows work on-campus for no more than 20 hours perweek; therefore these Fellowships are available to both US andinternational candidates, and are compatible with the F-1 student visa.Five Graduate Fellowships are available – one in each of thefollowing programs and centers:ENVIRONMENTAL LAW PROGRAMENERGY AND CLIMATE CENTERLAND USE LAW CENTERGLOBAL CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL LEGALSTUDIESFOOD AND BEVERAGE LAW CLINICMaria Antonia Tigreis a senior attorney at theEnvironment Program ofthe Cyrus R. Ms. Tigre isan SJD Candidate at theElisabeth Haub School ofLaw at Pace University.She holds a double LLMfrom the Elisabeth HaubSchool of Law at PaceUniversity (EnvironmentalLaw and ComparativeLegal Studies), fromwhere she graduatedmagna cum laude.

ACADEMICSLLM Comparative Lawdegree programsThe Master of Laws (LLM) in Comparative Legal Studies is intended forstudents whose first law degree was earned outside the United States. Toearn the LLM degree, candidates must complete a minimum of 24 academiccredits. The program may be completed in two full-time semesters, althoughsome students choose to take three semesters or more.LLM in Comparative Law General SpecializationStudents in the LLM in Comparative Legal Studies have earned their first law degrees fromuniversities and colleges all over the world, including Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa andthe Middle East. Some of them come to the US expressly for the LLM program, while others arealready living and working in the tristate area. Many graduates return to their home countriesand resume their legal careers after obtaining the LLM degree. Others remain in the UnitedStates for a period of practical training before returning home.LLM in Comparative Law Bar Exam SpecializationThe Specialization in US Legal Practice Bar Exam allows students who earned their first degreein law outside the United States to complete the coursework required to sit for the New Yorkbar examination. The courses taken as part of this optional specialization have been approvedby the New York Court of Appeals as fulfilling the requirements of Section 520.6 of the Rulesfor the Admission of Attorneys and Counselors at Law. Students interested in the New York barexamination must take into account the 24-month time limit from matriculation to award ofthe LLM degree.LLM in Comparative Law International BusinessSpecializationStudents in this specialization begin with required courses in Introduction to the AmericanLegal System and Introduction to US Legal Research. They must also complete courses inContract Law and International Business Transactions, and they must complete at least oneextensive research paper under faculty supervision. Their remaining courses are chosen froma list of international business subjects. Some of the subject areas available to students inthis program include public international law, private international law, dispute resolution,international business and international human rights.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRSLegal Education Without Bordersscholars, externships, exchangesVisiting ScholarsVisiting scholars are selected from a group of applicants including law professors,researchers, legislators, judges, civil servants and others. During their visit, which may beanywhere from a few weeks to one year, they conduct specialized legal research as a memberof the academic community at Pace Law. In recent years, we have welcomed visiting scholarsfrom around the world.All visiting scholars are supervised by a Pace Law faculty member, who offers them support,feedback and overall guidance in their research. Subject to the terms of the Visiting ScholarsPolicy, they are given access to the Pace Law Library, as well as internet access. The PaceUniversity Office of International Students and Scholars supports visiting scholars in theirapplications for the appropriate J-1 visas from the US immigration authorities. BAILE PROGRAMGraduate Student ExternshipsGraduate Students are given opportunities to intern withinternational organizations, corporations, and law firms in theWhite Plains and New York City area. Externship opportunitiescan accommodate a wide range of fields and interests, includingenvironmental law, policy and advocacy on behalf of public interestorganizations, and civil advocacy on behalf of the disadvantaged.Fieldwork gives graduate students the chance to form relationshipswith professionals in a specific field of interest.Brazil-American Institute forLaw and Environment is anon-profit research, teachingand policy center dedicatedto building and fosteringthe relationship betweenthe United States and Brazilin their shared goal ofenvironmental protection andsustainable developmentEach year, students travelto Brazil to experience theenvironmental issues theyhave studied in the classroomfirst hand. Students visitone of the many uniqueenvironmental regions ofBrazil and attend legalmeetings in Rio de Janeiroand other parts of the nation.UNITED NATIONSDIPLOMACY PRACTICUMIn this externship, studentsstudy the decision-makingprocess and negotiationof environmental treatiesin the United Nations andprovide assistance to UNNational Missions. Studentsattend meetings on behalfof the Missions and preparememoranda on a rangeof issues such as climatechange, renewable energy,fisheries protection, andforest management.

International ProgramsSummer Externships AbroadThe Summer Externships Abroad program is Pace Law’sflagship experiential learning program for students interestedin the practice of law in an international business context.Recent externship placements have specialized in internationalcorporate law, cross-border transactional work, andinternational arbitration and dispute resolution.Human Rights in Action (HRIA)ExternshipsThe Pace Law Human Rights in Action (HRIA) programplaces student externs in summer externships atinternational war crimes tribunals and at internationalhuman rights organizations.International Trade ExternshipsThe International Trade Externships program placesPace Law students in externships with local law firms orcorporate legal departments involved in internationaltrade and international business transactions.THE INTERNATIONALCRIMINAL COURT(ICC) MOOT COURTCOMPETITIONis based on the law andprocedures of the permanentinternational tribunaldedicated to the prosecution ofinternational criminal offenses.The annual competition atPace now serves as a RegionalQualifying Round for the globalcompetition with the finalround judged at the ICC itselfin The Hague, Netherlands byICC judges and legal officers.WILLEM C. VISINTERNATIONALCOMMERCIALARBITRATION MOOTVis Moot is a staple in thetraining of law students ininternational sales law andinternational commercialarbitration around the world.It is also a professionalnetworking event for personsin both fields of law.

Study Abroad ProgramsPace Law has exchange relationships with some of the top law schools in Asia,Europe, Australia and South America. Under these agreements, Pace Lawstudents may apply to study for a semester or full academic year at one of ourpartner schools. In many cases, classes at the host institutions are taught inEnglish. Upon completion of the exchange semester or year, the credits earnedmay transfer back to Pace Law and count towards the JD degree.Our partner schools are actively sending their own students to take classes atPace Law, thus increasing the diversity and richness of the classroom experience.

Darren Rosenblumserves as the Director of the Business LawConcentration, Director of Commercial and PrivateInternational Law Programs and Faculty Advisorof the Institute for International and CommercialLaw. His scholarship focuses on corporategovernance, in particular on remedies for sexinequality. In 2011, he was a Fulbright ResearchScholar in France to perform an empirical studyon the French quota for women on corporateboards which he presented as the guest of honorat the French National Assembly.Jason J. Czarnezkiis the Kerlin Professorof Environmental Lawand Associate Dean ofEnvironmentalPrograms. He specializesin natural resources,environ mentalregulation, and food lawand policy. His otherinterests include politicsand music. ProfessorCzarnezki received a J.D.from The University ofChicago. @czarnezkiShelby D. Greenteaches property, entertainment law and real estate courses. She is the author of various articles ioncorporate philanthropy, management buyouts and the public and private interests of mediacorporations. Professor Green received her J.D. from Georgetown University.
