04You have questions—we have answersHere are the top questions asked about life as a research student at Griffith.Where can a research degreetake me?What’s the difference betweenan honours degree and a PhD?A research degree from Griffith can take you in a number ofdifferent career directions, depending on your research topic andcareer aspirations.A bachelor degree with honours is a level 8 qualification on theAustralian Qualifications Framework (AQF); a PhD is level 10 andis the highest qualification recognised by AQF.In 2017, Griffith University initiated a project to gather careerdestination and pathway information from our doctoral andresearch masters (HDR) graduates. Our research found that90 per cent of HDR graduates were employed or self-employedone year after graduation. In terms of workload, an honours degree generally combines onetrimester of research with one trimester of coursework over oneyear, while a PhD is usually pure research undertaken over three orfour years. It is comparable to working full-time in the workforcein that you can work from 9 am to 5 pm on your project and areno longer bound by the traditional trimester system as you wouldbe as an honours student. In that sense, honours degrees can beless intense but are no less challenging or rewarding.Should I choose a courseworkor research degree? The type of study you undertake will depend on what you aretrying to achieve. Choose coursework if you want to advance your career,or change career direction—A postgraduate courseworkdegree (such as a graduate certificate, graduate diploma ormasters by coursework) builds on the skills and knowledgeyou’ve gained through professional experience and previousstudy. You’ll study courses that may involve lectures andtutorials, laboratory practice, or fieldwork. Choose a research degree if you want to advance yourcareer and add to human knowledge and understandingto create a better future for all—A research degree, such as a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Philosophy(MPhil), will prepare you for a research career. You’ll completea significant piece of research under supervision. You canalso choose to undertake a masters by research degree, which is a specialist degree in areas such as arts, education, design, medicine and music that combines coursework withprofessional and/or artistic practice. How long does an application taketo process/when will I hear theoutcome of my application? It will normally take six to eight weeks for your applicationto be processed. If you have not received an email regardingyour application after eight weeks, you can email us athdr-enquiry@griffith.edu.au to receive an update onyour application. Can I work while I’m completinga research degree?Full-time candidates (including those in receipt of scholarships)are permitted to undertake only a strictly limited amount of paidemployment. The following conditions apply: Full-time candidates (no scholarship): No more than15 hours a week during normal working hours(i.e., 9 am–5 pm Monday to Friday). Scholarship holders: No more than 9 hours a week duringnormal working hours (i.e., 9 am–5 pm Monday to Friday)For candidates employed in tutoring or lecturing, these hourswill include the time required for preparation and marking.Scholarship holders and sponsored students should consult theconditions associated with their awards and sponsorships forany special conditions relating to employment.Griffith University 2021–22 PhD and research degrees application guide
