CENTRAL SERVICE OFFICE, SAN ANTONIO, TEXASJANUARY 2021Chairman’s CornerCHAIRMAN’S CORNERFEBRUARY ISSUE 2021I watched the inauguration speech of our 46th President on TV and the dominate themewas “unity”. We AAs have known that unity is essential to our recovery since our beginning.Unity comes first in our three legacies of Unity, Recovery and Service, defining the threesides of our triangle. Now, more than ever, it is important to be united in carrying out ourprimary purpose of helping the alcoholic who still suffers. Our Central Service Office is the“hub” that unites our groups through multiple services. The 24-hour help line continues todirect callers looking for a meeting or to a 12-step volunteer for more in-depth conversation. The last thing anyone wants is to send a desperate alcoholic to a meeting that no longerexists. The dedicated special workers at CSO continuously update in person and onlinemeeting information if it is provided. Please keep those updates coming!Bill W. wrote in the Twelve and Twelve, pg. 129, on unity:“The unity of AA is the most cherished quality our society has. Our lives, the lives of all tocome, depend squarely upon it. Without unity, the heart of AA would cease to beat; ourarteries would no longer carry the life-giving grace of God.”Remember that CSO is still open for literature and other purchases to be picked up at theoffice and brought to your car. (No in store shopping yet.) The new and improved websitehas an online store for the convenience of shopping at home.Thank you for the privilege to serve this great community! We are the Village!Karen M.-2

CENTRAL SERVICE OFFICE, SAN ANTONIO, TEXASJANUARY 2021FEBRUARY 2021 SPONSORSHIPSisters of the HeartBY: CATHY W. SAN ANTONIO, TEXASA lucky crew of women dives into AA and forms a beautiful bond over many yearsand milesRenee and I became fast friends. We related to each other. She quickly became one of my AA sisters.Throughout the years, Lu has spoken often of her AA twin, Rosa. Rosa and Lu got sober at the same meetingon December 7, 1974 in Santa Maria, California. For the last 43 years, wherever they were in the world, they’dcontact each other on the seventh of each month. Lu and Rosa had parallel lives, one soberly guiding the other through unfamiliar territory. I never met Rosa in person, but her experience, strength and hope became myexperience, strength and hope through Lu.Another woman, Jenny, followed Rosa and Lu into AA four years later when she attended their home groupmeeting. The three established a cherished “sisters in sobriety” relationship.Lu remained my sponsor even when she and her husband, ironically, moved to Sacramento, California. Oursponsor-sponsee relationship crossed state lines as Lu still guided me through the Steps and Traditions. I regularly visited Lu in Sacramento where we would go to AA meetings together. A few years later, my AA community was beginning to extend westward when Renee relocated to Sacramento. I began meeting new friendsfrom Sacramento, including my new AA sister, Abby, who just recently moved to Italy to begin a new adventure. After Lu’s husband died, she moved to Fresno. While maintaining her relationships with women from SantaMaria, San Antonio and Sacramento, Lu started to establish bonds with women in Fresno. Through Lu I metJenna, a new AA sister.Over the last two years, Lu’s health declined. Last Thursday, the women in this story received a phone callfrom one of Lu’s daughters informing us that she was entering hospice and if we wanted to visit, we should visit soon. This past Saturday her AA and biological families all gathered in Lu’s living room. Some of us had never met,but we’ve been connected through the spirit. Jenna drove from her house in Fresno. Rosa’s daughter droveher three hours to be there. Jenny drove down from the mountains. Renee and I flew from Texas. Abby, nowliving in Italy, joined us via our smart phones. Phyllis, a relatively new member, also joined us. Also includedwere family members.- 11

CENTRAL SERVICE OFFICE, SAN ANTONIO, TEXASJANUARY 2021We commenced our first open Fresno International meeting of AA by reading the Serenity Prayer andthe first three paragraphs from Chapter 3, “More About Alcoholism.” Then people started sharing. Atfirst we focused on our appreciation for Lu, but these testimonies didn’t last long because Lu, in a softvoice, reminded us, “Principles over personalities.”At that moment I finally understood the meaning of Tradition Twelve, and our sharing shifted to focuson our spiritual experiences of trudging this road together. We were not a glum lot, as that wonderfulAA laughter could be heard across the patio where Lu’s grandchildren and great grandchildren wereplaying. Our meeting crossed the Atlantic Ocean as we passed the phone around to the person speaking soAbby could participate from Italy. We shared our journey of the heart and talked about how each journey parallels the others’. In the beginning, we learn to trust God and the program, then we learn to apply the spiritual principles of the program. Some of our journeys diverge as our Higher Power takes usto new lands. Some journeys include family healing, including daughters, grandchildren, in-laws andothers. Then we all have that final journey at the end of our lives. At one moment during my visit I asked Lu, “How are you doing this, dying so graciously?” Her answerwas swift. “Forty-three years ago I learned how to live with dignity,” she said. “And I am planning to diewith dignity.”We are no longer dying in a sinking ship, but living happy, joyous and free. This is my journey of experience, strength and hope of living and dying with dignity among a “Fellowship of the Spirit.”Re-printed with permission of A.A. GrapevineNOTE This is Cathy W second Grapevine article.- 12

C E N T R A L S E R V I C E O F F I C E , S A N TheA NA.A.T OServiceN I O , StructureTEXASJANUARY 2021The general service structure of A.A. is perhaps relatively known (or unknown, as it were) tomembers, even some who have been active in the program for a few years. Here’s a slight refresher:Each group elects a General Service Representative (G.S.R) which represents the voice of the groupconscience – G.S.R.’s attend district committee meetings and area assemblies where matters affectingthe entire area are discussed relating to carrying the A.A. message – every area elects an Area Delegateto attend and participate in the General Service Conference in New York each April. Here is a diagramfrom the 1978 A.A. Pamphlet representing the service structure:A.A. runs its own affairs without any outside interference, so each A.A. group needs to make itsvoice heard on overall A.A. policies. Each group has its say via the group’s G.S.R. Through this servicestructure, each group can have its voice heard in Worldwide A.A. Groups send their own ideas orproblems to the assembly, other groups share their experience and maybe help, and from the assemblyeach G.S.R. can take back to the group the experience of other groups. Sometimes these ideas arepassed along by the Area Delegate to the General Service Conference in New York for review anddiscussion by all Area Delegates, the General Service Board, and A.A. World Services. There is the famous story (perhaps A.A. folklore) of the blind A.A. member who asked his groupif there was a Big Book available in braille. At the time, there wasn’t. The group’s G.S.R. went to thedistrict meeting to suggest this idea. Then the idea was passed along to the Delegate at the AreaAssembly, then made its way to New York, and the braille Big Book was published! This is how A.A. issupposed to work. All parts of our Fellowship – group meetings, committees, offices, conferences –working together. We all have one joint purpose: to help the alcoholic who still suffers. But in order for A.A. to runitself, we must have a system for finding out how A.A. as a whole feels about its world affairs and how itwants to operate. We need constant, honest communication from one part of A.A. to the other. If agroup does not have an active G.S.R., it is isolated from the rest of the Fellowship. It does not participatein the group conscience of A.A. as a whole!Next month we will discuss where Central and Intergroup offices, such as C.S.O., just offBroadway, fit in the service structure (hint: it’s not as straightforward as you think!).- 16
