Be an Informed Health Care ConsumerMost people are not accustomed to questioning their doctors about the insurance plans theyaccept, or the cost and medical necessity of a treatment. Knowing what questions to ask andwhen to ask them makes the process much easier and less stressful! Asking questions ofyour health care providers helps maintain both the cost and quality of your health care. So it’simportant for everyone, regardless of the health care option elected, to ask about the medicalnecessity of any treatment and if there are alternatives to consider. Here are some tips to help youbecome a good health care consumer sk your provider or his/her business officeAif they accept your HCPS health care plan. Ifthey do, evaluate what plan is best for you. ake notes in advance of your office visitMabout the things you want to ask your doctor.Keep a list of any symptoms you have had orare currently experiencing. Keep a list of themedications you take, whether prescriptionsor over the counter. Share the list with allhealth care providers. ring a spouse or friend along with you.Bchances are if you don’t recall something thatwas said, he or she will! ring a pad and pencil to the doctor’s office;Bdon’t rely on your memory for everything! I f your doctor uses a term that you do notunderstand, ask what it means and ask that itbe spelled. Then, write it down and do somemore research once you leave the office. Get a copy of any test results. I f your doctor writes a prescription for you,ask your doctor and pharmacist aboutinteractions with other drugs you may betaking or about side effects that you mayexperience. Remember, if you are takingany maintenance medications, request oneprescription for a 30-day supply from a retailpharmacy and another prescription for mailorder (for up to a 90-day supply, plus up tothree refills). I f you have access to the Internet, use it tolearn about your medications or illnesses. The Internet has excellent information onmany health-related subjects. One respectedresource is webmd.com. Ask your physicianwhich web-sites they believe are valuable. Besure to let your physician know your findings. isit es/benefits or carefirst.comto link to our health care vendor websites formore resources. heck the vendor websites for details onCproviders and other useful information.Help control the cost of health careand promote your well-beingOn an almost-daily basis, the rising cost ofhealth care is in the news. Advances in medicaltechnology, expensive prescription drugs, consumer demand, and an aging population arejust a few factors that impact health care costs. While some factors are beyond the control of theconsumer, there are some things you can do tohelp keep health care costs down—both for youand for HCPS. Below are a few tips to help youbecome a wiser consumer of health care.Harford County Public Schools—Benefits Enrollment & Reference Guide 7

Be an Informed Health Care ConsumerMaintain a healthy lifestyleAsk for GenericMaintaining your own health can help to minimizeyour health care costs. The healthier you are,the less likely you are to need costly health careservices—which means you spend less on copays, deductibles, and other medical costs. Eat right andget plenty of exercise. When you need a prescription, ask your doctor toprescribe a generic, if one is available. Genericshave the same chemical equivalency as brandname drugs, and are held to the same standardsby the Food and Drug Administration, but they costless than brand-name drugs.Get regular checkupsReview your bills and Explanation ofBenefits (EOB)Get a regular annual checkup and/or physicalexam, which can uncover early warning signs ofpotential health problems, and can also help youbuild a good relationship with your doctor.Save the emergency room for emergenciesEmergency room visits are two to three times moreexpensive than a visit to the doctor’s office or anurgent care center. These ER visits are not onlycostly, but they can be unnecessarily stressful andtime-consuming for you and your family if whatyou need is routine care. Urgent care facilities areavailable in the area and may be used for a varietyof urgent health problems for a lower copay thanthe ER.Get regular screeningsGet regular screenings (e.g., mammograms)as recommended by your carrier andnational organizations, such as the AmericanCancer Society.Reviewing your health care bills can help youidentify and prevent unnecessary health carecosts. Here’s what to look for to determine if a billis correct: oes the date of service on the bill match theDdate you went to the doctor or the hospital? id you receive all the services or proceduresDlisted on the bill? re you charged for more x-rays or lab workAthan you received? Call your provider toreport any errors you spot on your bills orExplanation of Benefits forms (EOB’s). I s your share of the cost correct? If not, callthe insurance provider to discuss. If there is areferral involved, was the referral processedprior to the claim?Visit a primary care provider before going tosee a specialistPrimary care providers are usually familypractitioners, general practitioners, internists orpediatricians. A primary care provider can treatmany illnesses and injuries at a lower fee – inmany cases at half the cost of a specialist’s fee.For example, you don’t necessarily need to see anorthopedic specialist for back pain. Primary careproviders consider your overall health. They canadvise you about disease prevention and howto stay healthy. They are also familiar with yourpersonal health history and needs and have yourmedical records on file.8 Harford County Public Schools—Benefits Enrollment & Reference Guide
