President’s WelcomeCommunity, Change, &CollaborationDear ICA Colleagues and Friends:As we approach 70 years as Illinois’ premiere counseling organization, this year’s conference theme,“Reinventing Community”, is a reflection of something that we have undertaken in different ways throughoutour history. Founded as the Illinois Guidance and Personnel Association in 1947, our name has morphed toreflect our broader association with counselors at the national level who later banded together to form whathas become the American Counseling Association. More importantly, our sense of need, purpose, andpossibility has continued to grow, as reflected by the steady addition and evolution of our many specialtydivisions. So, in a way, our conference theme is both a celebration of our history of professional innovationand leadership, and a clear call to each of us to actively explore how we might define our local andprofessional communities, our niches and opportunities, and new ways of serving our clients and one another. Our conference reflects the best of the sort of collaboration necessary to continually change in a world ofchange. To reflect different ways that we as an association can engage the broader community in mutuallybeneficial ways, we invited the members of the Illinois Art Therapy Association (many of whom are also ICAmembers) to develop functional conference art reflective of our theme, and to engage our members who wish toexpress their reaction to the conference by modifying 3-D display pieces that may invoke a greater awarenessof community throughout the conference. We also collaborated with the Continuing Education Institute ofIllinois to develop a one-day pre-conference symposium bringing mental health and healthcare professionalstogether to explore the challenges and opportunities of interdisciplinary collaborative care. Additionally, weare sponsoring an innovative crowd-funded pilot-project developed by Chicago Counseling Associationpresident Matt Glowiak to explore how we might engage students who are exploring counseling as a careeroption and take their place in the ICA through their participation in the conference. And this doesn’t evenmention the numerous innovative workshops developed specifically with our conference theme in mind or theestimated 70-plus dedicated persons who worked through the year to produce the conference we are all nowenjoying. With these things in mind, I invite you to take the time to explore, reflect, and connect with your ICA community.Best wishes,Kevin Stouffer, PhD, MBA, LCPCICA President5

Workshop ScheduleContent Session 1 - Friday, 9:30 am - 10:20 amIllinoisClinical Supervision Experiences for School Counselors: Fostering Empathy in a Problem-Focused EnviornmentVince Walsh-Rock, LCPC, PEL-Counselor and Administrator & Ann Friesma, MA, LCPC, ACS; Katherine M. Wix, MSEd, LPC, NCC, PELSchool CounselingSchool counselors are increasingly faced with a myriad of societal, familial, and personal mental health issues when working with students.Clinical supervision can support counselors in managing the expansive needs of extremely high caseloads. Too often in school settings, counselors receive sporadic administrative supervision and may lack support from a professional with a counseling background. Such a lack ofclinical supervision and support can lead to counselors employing quick-fix problem solving methods just to keep up with student needs. Usingempathy to establish therapeutic alliances is critical in fostering a counseling relationship in the school setting. In this session, a structuredclinical supervision outline for school counselors will be shared. A variety of strategies and techniques will also be given so supervisors andcounselors will understand the need for clinical supervision experiences within the school setting.IndianaCultivating Authentic Community in Counseling Programs through Faculty-Student RelationshipsJustin D. Lauka, PhD, LCPC, CCMHC, NCC, ACS & Kimberly A. Hart, MSEd, Supervisor-in-Training, NCC, PEL, LPC; MargaretBinhackova; Erin N. FriedmanGraduate counseling programs are called to “create and support an inclusive learning community” (CACREP, 2009, p. 4). In order to do so,counselor educators must foster a program culture based on trust, collaboration, authenticity, support, and care. Key to establishing such aculture is the successful navigation through the myriad roles and corresponding relationships that counselor educators and students engage.Through such varied roles as instructor, supervisor, advisor, mentor, administrator, and gatekeeper, counselor educators are continuallypresented with opportunities to enhance or diminish the development and well-being of counselors-in-training. Likewise, throughout theirprogram, students must often grapple with ambiguous ethical situations and multiple relationships between faculty and peers. This workshopwill provide a unique perspective by sharing personal anecdotal experiences of graduate counseling students and faculty while anchoring thediscussion in scholarly literature. A general framework will be provided that outlines important elements of a healthy environment and culturewithin counseling programs; potential challenges and pitfalls will be discussed. Specific examples will be presented that demonstrate thehealthy multiple relationships in ambiguous situations. Active and open dialogue with audience members will be encouraged.Salon A & BMental Health and the Law: Conflict and CooperationGwendolyn J. Sterk, JD, MA & Anne SkrodzkiThis program examines the intersection of the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Confidentiality Act and the Illinois Marriageand Dissolution of Marriage Act. The topic will focus on the use of evaluations, intervention, judicial supervision and parenting coordinationby the Illinois Family Courts, as well as, the extent of confidentiality of mental health treatment in light of the Illinois Supreme Court Case,Johnston v. Weil 946 N.E.2d 329 (Ill. 2011). Additionally, the presentation will generally address the use of mental health records inlitigation (tort, labor law, etc.) and the rights and responsibilities of those who receive mental health treatment as well as those who providemental health services.Salon C & DEver Expanding Ripples: The Role of Compassion in Fostering CommunityDeb Majewski, EdD, LCPC & Meghan Dudek, MA, LPCMore than ever in our society we are challenged to live and work in close proximity in diverse communities. This program will explore therole of compassion in fostering healthy communities, starting with ourselves. Participants will learn the value of compassionate thinking andhow to incorporate it within themselves, and then with others.O’Hare/MidwayEthical Challenges within Tightly Woven, Small College Campus CommunitiesSarah Patterson-Mills, PhD, LPC, Associate Professor & Therese Chavaux Turnbull, PhD, LPC, Associate ProfessorDuring the last decade, external and internal organizational and cultural factors have increased the pressures being placed on collegecounselors. Externally, it is anticipated college counselors will work to maintain a safe learning environment through accurate risk assessmentof students who are homicidal or suicidal. Internally, the demands of the “boundary-less career” have produced an increased number of rolesfor college counselors-and others-within organizations (Lissack & Roos, 1999). At times, these expectations and increased roles on campussettings creates real potential for competing roles and dual relationships. What are the ethical ramifications for these intersection points inthe clinical realm? This presentation will address various ethical challenges faced by clinicians, interns, students, mentors, supervisors andprofessors when teaching, advising, supervising and supporting students in a graduate level counseling program and college campus setting. These ethical challenges can easily be generalized to multiple counseling settings: counseling agency, private practice, and educational settings.A social convoy model (Ajrouch, Blandon, & Antonucci, 2004) will be used as a hands-on illustration to better understand the effect of theseintersecting communities on oneself.Salon ELegislative Update on School Counseling in IllinoisToni R. Tollerud, PhD & Dan Stasi, Executive Director of ISCA and IMHCAIn August, 2014, a new definition for the role of the School Counselor was signed into law. This was critical for the future of school counselorsacross the state. Come hear about this as well as other legislation that will impact the role and responsibilities of school counselors includingconfidentiality, FOID, and more. Handouts will be provided.WoodfieldAdding to Your Counselor Toolbox: Incorporating Therapeutic Horticulture into Your PracticeAlicia Green, LPC, HTRLearn how to help your clients grow!
