See story on page 14.IN THISISSUE.The Germantown School Boardapproved the 2020-21 school calendarduring its Jan. 27 meeting.Director of Human Resources MichaelNowak said the calendar committee twicemet to build the calendar. He said thisyear’s calendar is nearly similar to previous school calendars. Under the calendar, there are total of 191 contractural daysfor teaching staff while students will beattending school for 175.5 days.Under the calendar approved by theboard, school begins on Sept. 1 and endson June 10. Under state law, publicschools cannot begin their year beforeSept. 1 unless a district seeks a waiverfrom the state Department of PublicInstruction (DPI). Nowak said the committee considered requesting a waiverfrom the DPI to begin school earlier thanSept. 1 but it felt that would not likelybe granted. Also under the calendar, spring breakis from March 26-April 5. Nowak saidEaster falls on April 4 and the Mondayafter Easter will also be a day off.“This is consistent with the majorityof school districts in the area,” Nowaksaid in a memo to the board. He addedthat having the Monday after Easter offOut on the Town PAGE 5American Heart Month PAGE 19Classifieds PAGES 16-18would allow “ample time for travelneeds.”One change from previous year, theday before Thanksgiving (Nov. 25) will bea day off. Nowak said in past years therehas been a half student day. This yearstudents had off but it was a professional development day for teaching staff.“As we talked and looked at it, without jeopardizing the ending, we felt OKwith having that Wednesday off,” Nowaksaid. The winter break will be from Dec. 22to Jan. 3. Nowak said the last week inDecember is a two-day school week.Nowak said the committee appreciatedhaving Dec. 23 off without having itjeopardize the end date for the year. The calendar includes 12.5 professional development/or teacher days andthree conference days.Board member Michael Loth thankedthe committee for their work in puttingthe calendar together.“On the surface it seems kind of simple but in reality I know it’s anything but(simple),” Loth said.School Board President RobertSoderberg added he has served on thecalendar committee in the past.“It’s a lot of hard work and you’ve gotto please a lot of people,” Soderberg said.Like us on Facebook!facebook.com/HometownExpressNewsShopping and Donation CenterYOURDonations HelpYOUR Community!W190N10768 Commerce CircleGermantown 262-255-7470(old Gander Mountain building)W156 N9664Pilgrim Rd.GermantownDINE IN CARRYOUTLIKE US ON FACEBOOK!251-1555WE DELIVERTUESDAY – FRIDAY 11-2pmLUNCHBUFFETDINE-IN ONLY 750Pizza, Chicken, GarlicBread, Salad BarDelivery Available during Lunch HoursWe Offer Full Service Catering!Follow us on Twitter!twitter.com/HometownExpressHomeFREETRIPLE PANEGLASSUPGRADEEXCLUSIONS MAY APPLY,ASK FOR DETAILS.*One special offer per household. Slowdown, move over as the lives of ourhighway heroes are on your shoulders.”While all fifty states have slow down, move over laws for emergency responders, which includes tow trucks, fewerthan 30 percent of Americans knowabout these laws, according to theNational Highway Transportation SafetyAdministration (NHTSA). In Wisconsin, the law requires drivers to shift lanes orslow down in order to provide a "safetyzone" for a squad car, ambulance, firetruck, tow truck, utility vehicle, or highway maintenance vehicle that is stoppedon the side of a road with its warninglights flashing.AAA, which is in the business of res-cuing millions of stranded motoristsacross the country each year, says about200 roadside workers and first responders -- one every six days -- loses theirlife at the roadside and hundreds moreare injured while assisting motorists. To protect roadside workers andimprove highway safety, AAA offersthese precautionary tips:Always remain alert. Avoid distractions and focus on the task of driving.Maintain a visual lead of everythinggoing on 20 to 30 seconds ahead of you. This gives you time to see problemsahead and change lanes and adjust speedaccordingly.Emergencies can occur anywhere onthe road. When you see flashing lights, slow down and prepare well in advanceto change lanes. Allow others to mergeinto your lane when necessary.Don’t follow semi-trucks or otherlarge vehicles too closely. If a truckmoves into a left-hand lane, don’t speedaround the right side. They are changinglanes for a reason; be prepared to changelanes yourself. When road conditions are slick, don’tmake sudden lane changes which cancause an uncontrollable skid. Changelanes early and move over gradually. If you are unable to move over, slowdown to a safe speed taking into consideration that you are approaching a workspace where pedestrians are present. For information on laws in otherstates, visit drivinglaws.aaa.com20.00 OIL CHANGEROTATIONFREEHALF-PRICE AUTO REPAIRIncludes up to 5 quarts of semi-synthetic oil & filterCHURCH LISTINGSMENOMONEE FALLSEMMANUEL COMMUNITYUNITED METHODIST CHURCHN84W16707 Menomonee Ave. 262-251-3830Sundays: Sanctuary and Celebration WorshipServices 8:30 am. While these componentstend to be looked at separately, diet and exercise are actually interconnected.According to the American College of SportsMedicine, adequate food and fluid should beconsumed before, during and after exercise.Following that advice can help men and womenmaintain their blood glucose concentration during exercise, which allows them to maximizetheir performance and improves their recoverytime. Some people understandably may feel thateating before exercising seems counterintuitive,as food may contribute to feelings of sluggishness that would make it hard to maximize aworkout. But what people eat, and drink, priorto working out is important, as the right foodscan make a positive
