6th Sunday of Easter:John 14:23-29Jesus has, on several occasions, been preparing the disciples for hisdeparture; he has not kept them in the dark about this fact (verse 28).But knowing he will be leaving them soon and understanding whatthat meant for them personally were probably two different things.Something toThink AboutBefore criticizing your wife’s faults, remember that they may have preventedher from getting a better husband.Six essential qualities that are the keyto success: Sincerity, personal integrity, humility, courtesy, wisdom, clarity.–William MeningerGood question.Lord, help me to overcome my guilt, my shame, and myfear. Open my heart, so God can make his home there.Into this reality of impending absencecomes the Spirit, the Advocate, sent byGod in Jesus’ name to be present with thefollowers of Jesus (verse 26). This is thefirst time we read about this presenceas the Holy Spirit. The Advocate is apresence the disciples will need in orderto love as they are called to love. It will,as Jesus promises, be as if he is still withthem. Additionally, the Spirit will serveas their teacher in Jesus’ absence (verse26). Jesus as teacher has been a profoundpresence in the Gospel message andcontinuing this teaching — his teaching— will be the Advocate’s role.Having a teacher who makes a differencein your life is an important thing. Countlessstories have been told of teachers makingan impact on a young person’s life in waysthat turned them around or helped themfulfill their potential in profound ways.Mine was my mom who spent hours withme trying to overcome some seriouslearning issues I was having in school asa child. She was my champion and myteacher. She made the path I am on todaypossible. And I never felt alone on thatjourney. She was with me through it all. Now, clearly she is not on the level ofJesus as teacher and mentor, but all of usneed someone present “in our corner” toembody the Teacher who leads us to beour fullest selves. Jesus did that for thedisciples. He taught them in ways thatlead them to leave their previous lives tofollow him in ministry and to change theworld in so many ways.Jesus does more than gently wish thempeaceful lives — he gives them peace(verse 27). This is not a wish. This is agift. It is a gift of profound importanceat this moment in the journey of Jesusand the disciples. He must have knownthe turmoil they would face when hewas gone and he does all he can toprepare them for the next part of thejourney. Peace is an important elementof John’s gospel (along with love that hasbeen examined in the previous weeks’lectionary readings). And like love, peaceis a mark of true discipleship that isrequired of the disciples — then and now.Into this moment we are called to preacha word about peace and presence. Afterthis discourse, Jesus intended for thedisciples to feel his peace and presencealways — through the Spirit, in thecontinued teaching to come, and in theconnectedness of the community ofbelievers.Have a sense of humor. All successfulpeople tend to have a sense of the absurdabout themselves. They laugh easily andrecognize that we all have foibles whichcan at times be very humorous. In otherwords, don’t take yourself too seriously.–Joe Di BaggioThere is nothing noble about beingsuperior to another person. The truenobility is in being superior to yourprevious self. –Hindu ProverbYou can handleanything if you thinkyou can. Just keep yourcool and your senseof humor. –SmileyBlantonFacts do not cease toexist because they are ignored. –AldousHuxleyA lie has speed, but truth has endurance.–Edgar MohnA JokeA man stopped at a bar and asked for amartini. Before he drank it, he took outthe two olives and laid them on the barcounter. After his third drink, there weresix olives on the bar. The bartenderasked the man, “What’s the idea, don’tyou like olives?” “It’s this way,” said thecustomer, “my wife told me to go outand buy a jar of olives, and I don’t darego home without that jar of olives.”
