The powerof threeThree key themes underpin Hull’sExecutive MBA. Woven throughout theentire programme these combineto shape you into a leader who canthink strategically, holistically andethically to operate effectively in thecomplex business environment oftoday and tomorrow.I look back on how I wasoperating as a clinician beforeand I can recognise that I was, unknowingly, approachingsituations with tunnel vision.Hull’s Connected Thinkingprinciple has helped me to seethe organisation in a differentway. It’s so beneficial.Jaishree Hingorani,Consultant Obstetrician andGynaecologist, Clinical Lead forObstetrics, Hull University TeachingHospitals NHS TrustResponsibleLeadershipDo it rightAs a leader, you’re responsible in more ways thanone. Our approach enables you to balance yourresponsibilities as a leader alongside the demandsof all stakeholders including staff, customersand the communities within which yourorganisation operates.Drawing on our expertise in business ethics, you’ll consider and assess the moral componentsof decisions rather than aiming for short-term financialgains. Working with real-life settings, you’ll learn howto reflect on decisions and develop critical analysistechniques to reveal the consequences – negative andpositive – of your actions. The programme encourages you to think – orrethink – in terms of the broader perspective andtake the right approach.Through research the MBAhelps you to give identity andunderstanding of leadershipprinciples that you mightbe aware of but don’t alwaysconsider day to day. Recently,I’ve been researching theconnection between ethicalleadership and emotionalworkload linked to role andtask planning, and the way inwhich leaders can help theirteams to avoid things like‘burnout syndrome’ –and with it the obviousconsequences for theindividual and theorganisation.Alastair Brooks,Associate Director Commercial Servicesat Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHSFoundation Trust; Managing Director ofWebV Solutions LtdConnectedThinkingIt’s all connectedOur holistic approach deepens your understandingof business actions and reactions. The relationship between cause and effect isn’t alwaysstraightforward or easy to identify. But in adoptinga ‘systems-thinking’ approach we can evaluateorganisations, which creates the ability to identifypotential outcomes. And enable you to take intoaccount multiple cause-and-effect relationships.By considering organisations as their own ‘ecosystem’,we guide you towards being able to apply systematicthinking to any given situation. The result is an increased ability to predict outcomes.Which in turn gives you the opportunity to be in abetter position to maximise advantage – or alleviatepotential problems.Complexityand AmbiguityNothing is straightforwardLeaders of today need to be able to operate in thecomplex world of tomorrow. The intricate nature of modern organisations combinedwith the rapidly changing and unpredictable world inwhich they operate means traditional waysof thinking and doing can only take you so far.Of course, your experience is valuable to draw onbut implementing the same solution will not work twicebecause everything – the world, situations, concepts andpeople – constantly changes. Our programme encourages you to be comfortable withthis level of uncertainty. We enable you to be aware of thefact that different contexts create different challenges, tounderstand what those might be – and what approachesyou can take to manage them.I work with a wide variety ofgroups and agencies in myrole and how I relate to peopleis much less black and whitenow. I’m better placed towork through those naturallyoccurring complexities usingthe tools and strategiesI’ve developed to engagepeople in different ways andbuild consensus.Nicholas Harne,Head of Service – Housing Strategyand Renewal, Hull City CouncilHelping you to assess complex situations in this wayincreases your confidence as a decision maker anddecreases the levels of uncertainty around the choicesyou make. It also provides you with the knowledge, skillsand techniques to manage the complex challenges oftoday – and tomorrow.10 hull.ac.ukThe Hull Executive MBA 11
