Find Your Reason to Start NowFor nearly 40 years, Abby Floyd, SOMC Facilities ProjectCoordinator, has watched the hospital, evolve, changeand grow, and she has had a huge hand in that process.Over the past year though, Abby decided to evolve in anarea of her personal life: her own health journey.Five or six years ago, Abby joined a healthy program atwork and said that she stuck with it for a while and lostsome weight.“I did lose weight at the time, which I did for my kidsand my grandkids because I wanted to be around asthey got older,” she said.A year ago, she decided to commit to her health journeyagain. She has been involved in SOMC’s Healthy Partnersfor years, but decided to join the first Weight Watchersat Work group in the Fall of 2018. She also joined ForeverFit to help her maintain accountability. All three of theprograms are offered through Employee Health andWellness and are available to all employees.“This time, it’s about me,” she said. “I made this decisionfor me this time.”Along with the accountability of these programs, Abbyhas deemed the key to weight loss as maintaining alog of what she consumes during the day. She saidportion control and self-control is crucial for success. She emphasized, though, that she still enjoys the foodshe loves in moderation paired with discipline.Abby credits her job, which helped her reach her stepgoal during the day and keeps her active. She alsomaintains an active lifestyle outside of work with herfamily, walking and yard work.“I like the gym and have a membership, but I just don’thave the time to get there right now,” she said. Her success didn’t come through a gym membership, although she encourages people to go and try thegym. She also said that starting the programs wasn’tintimidating at all.“This organization is fantastic,” she said. “If you wantto be healthy, they give you every opportunity to behealthy and are so encouraging.”Abby said to be successful in weight loss andmaintaining a healthy lifestyle, “you have to have to bewilling and ready to make that change.”Her advice to those hesitating to get started is to startnow.“Take care of your body; it is the only one that you’vegot,” she said. This past year has had so many positive health impactson her life.
