Working to EnsureWildlife & Wild LandsThrive in Modern Africa

Dear Africa Traveler,We have guests who have traveled to Africa for their first time, and those who have beenon safari more than 12 times, and they come back delighted, excited, and full of life.So you have to ask yourself why – is it the animals, the people, the sunsets and ginand tonics? We have been operating safaris for more than 30 years and spoken to thousands ofour travelers before and after their trip, and we know why.The landscapes are vast, open, and wild; the red ball sunsets are dramatic; the dustand hot showers bring adventure and refreshment; lions exude muscle and power inearly morning light. These lifetime experiences are always cherished as we slip backinto our time-starved lives. But the golden moments come from the African people you meet along the way – yourguides and bedroom hands, your cheerful chef and smiling village kids, your trackers, barmen, and bush pilots.2A F R I C A N S A FA R I S N I N E T O P T R I P S T O C U S T O M I Z E A N D M A K E YO U R O W NIn Africa you’ll find the luxury of time and genuine humanexchange. Three generations later, David’s grandfather movedfrom the Cape to Bulawayo, the capital of Rhodesia (which became Zimbabwe in1980). David and his three brothers were born and raised in Zimbabwe. From the age of three, David and his family took extended camping safaris inBotswana and Zimbabwe to the Okavango Delta, the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans,Hwange, Mana Pools, Gonarezhou, and Chizarira National Parks. Safari lodgesdid not yet exist, so the family typically set off in an old Series I Land Roverhauling a trailer stuffed with canvas tents and equipment that would supportthem in the bush for two to three weeks at a time. The boys walked throughgame-rich savannas led by their father, armed with an old 303 rifle and acuriosity to learn about the African bush.Unknowingly, these childhood expeditions laid the foundation for BushtracksExpeditions, which was started in 1989 by David Tett and his American wife,Carolyn, and his two brothers, Nicholas and Christopher.Over the last three decades, we have shared the intimate, authentic safariexperience of David’s youth with several thousand travelers. Many of themhave traveled with us twice. Some have returned three or four times, and twocouples have explored Africa more than nine times with Bushtracks, which is atrue testament to the endless fascination and life-changing experiences of thisextraordinary continent.6A F R I C A N S A FA R I S N I N E T O P T R I P S T O C U S T O M I Z E A N D M A K E YO U R O W N800.995.8689 BUSHTRACKS.COM7

Africa is a really big place, nearly as big as North America and South America combined, comprised of 54 independent countries. There is savanna, what is generally referredto as the bush or bushveld. There are snow-capped mountains, extensive deserts, andforests, including what we think of as jungle. There are also some of our planet’s mostexquisite beaches. The Bushtracks team of safari planners is comprised of people whohave grown up in, or have regularly visited, the African bush. We know our monkeysfrom our apes, cheetahs from leopards, and the cultural differences between theMaasai and the Samburu. On a custom-built safari you get to cherry-pick exactly what you want to do and see(given that no one can guarantee exact animal sightings) and our team of expert safariplanners will guide you through the options. A custom safari should begin with findingout what kind of person, couple or family is traveling, when they plan to travel, howadventurous they are and what level of luxury they expect.First-time visitors to Africa will naturally want to experience at least some of thehotspots, but you’ll need the deep local knowledge of a custom safari operator so asnot to get caught up in the throng of vehicles and telephoto lenses that can amass likewildebeest trying to cross the Mara River. But with a little finesse you can have the restof the Serengeti, for example, virtually to yourself. And perhaps the very best aspect of a custom safari – although not always obvious – isthe ability to recognize the needs of local people, the health of the natural environment, and conservation issues. In safari areas, most people live in remote villages wherehuman-wildlife conflicts are endemic.Your CustomSafari . . .Relative poverty and conservation challenges are part of the safari parcel and it wouldbe naive to ignore them. Rather than turn a blind eye, find out how you can invest yourvacation spending in the future of these remarkable but vulnerable places. If your safarioperator does not have solid on-ground community or conservation alliances, find onethat does. With awesome places come awesome responsibilities.WILL THAT BE WITH GORILLAS OR WHALES?by David Bristow12A F R I C A N S A FA R I S N I N E T O P T R I P S T O C U S T O M I Z E A N D M A K E YO U R O W N800.995.8689 BUSHTRACKS.COM13

A TypicalDay on SafariWhile we tell our guests that therereally is no such thing as a “typical”day on safari because each dayholds a different adventure, thereis a natural rhythm to your dailyschedule on safari that is tied tothe times of day the animals willbe most active: early morning, late afternoon, and evenings. The schedule that follows is a goodguideline, but it may vary slightlydue to seasonality. Additionally, some camps offer a variety ofactivities as an alternative togame viewing in a vehicle.6:00 AM: A gentle tap at your door alerts youthat a pot of coffee or hot chocolate has beendelivered to your tent to help extract you fromyour comfortable bed.7:00 AM: Board your safari vehicle, whereyou will find hot water bottles and heavy woolblankets to ward off the early morning chill. Asthe sun begins to rise, the temperature warms, and you will shed your layers in favor of a capand sunglasses. Keep your eyes open for the bigcats – lions and leopards – who may be returningfrom a night of hunting. Mid-morning your guidewill find a scenic place to pull over and enjoyanother cup of coffee and a biscuit or two.11:00 AM: Return to camp where a beautiful, hotbrunch awaits you. As you eat, you’ll have theopportunity to ask your guide more questionsabout your sightings, and learn more about yourguide’s background.12:30 PM: With your stomach full, head backto your tent or to the pool for a midday siesta. If napping is not your style, this is a great timeof day to review and edit the morning’s photos, take notes on what you’ve seen, or borrow abook from camp to brush up on your knowledgeof African birds and mammals.3:00 PM: Rejoin your guide for afternoon teabefore boarding your safari vehicle for theafternoon’s game drive, allowing you to explorea different part of the reserve. As the sun dropslow on the horizon, your guide will find a vistafrom which you can watch a beautiful Africansunset with sundowners – the cocktail orbeverage of your choice. On the drive back tocamp, your vigilant tracker will swing a spotlightand point out gleaming eyes amidst the foliage.7:00 PM: On arrival back at your camp, you willhave time for a shower before returning to theoutdoor boma around a bonfire for a deliciousdinner. Dinner is another excellent opportunityto talk with your guide about the day’s sightings, and the plan for the following day. After coffeeand a nightcap, you’ll return to your comfortablebed for a good night’s sleep before the next day’searly rise.14A F R I C A N S A FA R I S N I N E T O P T R I P S T O C U S T O M I Z E A N D M A K E YO U R O W N800.995.8689 BUSHTRACKS.COM15

SOUTHERNAFRICACandidCamera:INSIDE A PHOTO HIDECONSTRUCTION AND SITE LOCATIONPhoto hides are structures built to create optimum conditions for photographinganimals. First and foremost, they need to be located in an area that drawswildlife, generally near a waterhole. They are then positioned taking manyfactors into consideration: the angle of the sun, the background, and theangle of the viewer in relationship to the wildlife. In the extreme, they may bepermanent structures, like this elephant-proof, partially submerged containerat Mashatu, they may be constructed of sturdy materials like logs, and some aresemi-permanent, able to be repositioned as the seasons change.THE HIDE EXPERIENCEBy Carolyn TettA session photographing from the hide may be scheduled as an alternative toa game drive. Sessions last about three to four hours, and are offered in themornings and afternoons, concurrent with game drives. Morning sessions arepreferred over afternoon sessions as the animals are more active at that timeof day. Photographers of all levels and non-photographers alike are welcomein the hide, where they will be accompanied by a specialist photo guide fromthe camp. Generally no more than four photographers can be accommodatedin the confines of the small structure, and because silence and stillness are soimportant, use discretion when including children.A VARIETY OF WILDLIFE IN UNIQUE POSESMashatu’s Matebole hide, ideally positioned next to a waterhole, is located inprime elephant habitat. Inside the hide, viewers’ heads are at ground level. Asthe animals draw near to quench their thirst, photographers capture stunningsafari photos featuring animals and birds in a variety of poses, some only tenfeet away! Kudus, giraffes, impalas, baboons, hyenas and even some large catshave all been photographed at the hide.SAFARI CAMPS WITH PHOTO HIDESWhile Mashatu (featured on the Botswana Big Game Safari on the followingpage) offers the greatest variety of hides, including its elephant-proof, groundlevel hide; semi-permanent hides; an infinity bird hide from which seed-eatingbirds can be photographed at eye level; and a hide based at a white-fronted beeeater colony, other safari camps offer less-extensive photo hides constructedof log piles for safe, up-close photography in a variety of habitats. Savuti Campand DumaTau Camp, in northern Botswana on the deep, clear waterway of theSavute Channel, each have well-positioned hides of this variety. Little Makalolo,in the heart of Hwange National Park, has a log pile hide overlooking a waterholein camp. And Kenya’s ol Donyo Lodge, famous for its Mount Kilimanjaro views, also offers an open-air hide, or ‘log jam.’ Including any of these camps in yoursafari planning will ensure you return home with a variety of safari photos.20A F R I C A N S A FA R I S N I N E T O P T R I P S T O C U S T O M I Z E A N D M A K E YO U R O W N800.995.8689 BUSHTRACKS.COM21
