The Commencement tradition dates back to the Middle Ages. For today’sceremony, the Dais Party on the stage and the faculty are wearing academicregalia, whereby each element is distinctive for the degree earned.The Mace, carried by the Chief Marshal, symbolizes the University’sgoverning authority and is present only when the President andTrustees are in attendance.The President’s Medallion, representing the Chain of Office, carries theUniversity’s Motto Sapientia Desursum, “Wisdom from Above”.The portrait of Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, the foundress of theFelician Sisters, represents the visionary leaders who founded MadonnaUniversity in 1937. The Felician Sisters sponsor several other ministriesacross North America.The graduates and faculty are grouped by academic discipline and willprocess in order of seniority, beginning with the newest college or school.

Honorary Degree RecipientGerald W. SmithDoctor of Humane Letters2022 Commencement SpeakerNative Detroiter Gerald W. Smith is president of GW Smith & Associates, acommunications firm specializing in strategic planning, video production, eventplanning and public relations. Recently, he served as vice president for the MacombCounty Habitat for Humanity, and before establishing his own firm, Smith was seniormanager of External Affairs for Comcast-Michigan.Early in his career, Smith served 14 years as director of community and project developmentat PBS/Detroit Public Television. Best known for co-hosting the EMMY-nominatedTV/radio talk show “Back-To-Back”, Smith also hosted “Good Schools: Making theGrade”.As a member of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation’s development teamhe co-authored several market studies for the City and served as project director for the Eastern Market, Seven MileLivernois, and Millender Center.A University of Detroit, graduate, Smith actively supports all levels of education. As a faculty member of WayneState’s Department of African Studies he received the Carter G. Woodson Award for excellence in education in 1998,and was named U.S. Peace Corps Black Educator of the Year in 1990. He also taught at Wayne County CommunityCollege, and was a guest lecturer at the Nairobi International School in Nairobi, Kenya.Smith served four terms on Madonna University’s board of trustees and was its first African American vice chair. Aschair of the Committee on Advancement, he helped raise funds for the University’s Franciscan Center. He also was abenefactor and a mentor to students in the Bridging Lost Gaps program.He has received hundreds of awards and served on numerous boards. He is a 2010 inductee into the MichiganChapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences EMMY Silver Circle and a “Michigan Chronicle”Man of Excellence award recipient; a 2011 Leadership Macomb graduate; and a 2012 National Association of MultiEthnicity in Communications Leadership Seminar graduate.Distinguished Alumna AwardPerrmella Harris, ’982022 Distinguished AlumnaThe oldest of four girls, Perrmella Harris grew up in Detroit, and was the first in herfamily to earn a college degree. Harris earned a bachelor of arts in video communicationsin 1998. Then, at a very young age, the goal oriented and entrepreneurial Harris ownedand operated the first, successful Black Cheer Gym, in Michigan, for some 25 years.The director of business development at SMS Group of Companies in Detroit, Harrisalso serves on the board of the Livonia Chamber of Commerce. She is a certified judgefor MHSAA Girls Competitive Cheer and NAIA College Cheer. An Amateur AthleticUnion volunteer for more than 20 years, Harris also has served as a National Cheerleadingofficial for more than 30 years.Her love for supporting and encouraging others to succeed led Harris to start the BlingEffect Foundation, a nonprofit organization that offers unique opportunities for personal growth, mentorship, anddevelopment while building character in young people and providing scholarships for those who complete the sixmonth program.Harris has been married to Glenn for 28 years and they have three adult children – Glenn Jr., Kory, and Keion. In2021,she earned a Master’s in Management and Leadership from Western Governors University. Earlier this year, shereceived the Livonia Chamber of Commerce Ambassador of the Year Award.According to Harris, her Madonna University education changed her life forever. “My college degree has opened upmany opportunities, and it prepared me both intellectually as well as socially,” she said. “I was able to not only learnabout the various positions of broadcasting, but also to perfect my communication skills, which I use to this day.”Madonna University Graduates May 7, 20223
