Understanding Paper CertificationsChain of CustodyForest Stewardship Council Chain of Custody (CoC) is the path takenby the raw materials harvested froma certified forest all the way throughprocessing, production, distribution andprinting until it is a final product to be soldto an end customer.The Forest Stewardship Council (FSCCertified) is an international network,which promotes responsible managementof the world’s forests. The FSC accreditsindependent third-party organizations suchas certification bodies. These certificationbodies certify organizations to theFSC standards. Its trademark providesinternational recognition to organizationsthat support the growth of responsibleforest management.We are proud to have earned the followingCoC certifications:Programme for the Endorsementof Forest CertificationThe Programme for the Endorsementof Forest Certification (PEFC) Councilis an independent, non-profit, nongovernmental organization, founded in1999, which promotes sustainably managedforests through independent third partycertification. PEFC provides an assurancemechanism to purchasers of wood andpaper products that they are promoting thesustainable management of forests.PEFC is similar to FSC in relation to theend product certification, and is growing inpopularity across some regions of WesternEurope. PEFC offers customers a badgeof sustainability as requested by manyend users, as proof of corporatelyresponsible purchasing. Over the past 12 years, over 157 millionhectares in 80 countries have been certifiedaccording to FSC standards, while severalthousands of products are produced usingFSC Certified wood and carrying theFSC trademark. FSC operates throughits network of National Initiatives andis becoming increasingly demanded bycustomers looking for a sustainablebranded paper.The FSC trademark can be displayed onproducts containing a mix of FSC , recycledand other responsible sources. The FSC logo identifies products from well managedforests. It is the global benchmark forresponsible forest management.The SustainableForestry InitiativeThe Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)program is based on the premise thatresponsible environmental behavior andsound business decisions can co-exist. SFIprogram participants practice sustainableforestry on all the lands they manageand they influence millions of additionalacres through the training of loggers andforesters in best management practicesand landowner outreach programs. Thisunique commitment to sustainable forestryrecognizes that all forest landowners,not just SFI program participants, playa critical role in ensuring the long-termhealth and sustainability of our forests.The SFI program is overseen by a multistakeholder Board of Directors, which is thesole governing body over the SFI Standardand all aspects of the program, includingchain of custody certification and labeling,marketing and promotion.Please look for FSC Certified products.5
