Standards, specifications & methodsWhat do you want?4

StandardsIf you don’t set standards 5

Standardsyou won’t know what’s right.6

Standards (Not what you think) - ISOA document established by consensus andapproved by a recognized body that provides forcommon and repeated use, rules, guidelines orcharacteristics for activities or their results, aimedat the achievement of the optimum degree of orderin a given context.7

Specifications - ISOA detailed description of the criteria for a piece ofwork. Specifications for printing can includecharacterization-data, ICC-profiles, PDF preflightcriteria, calibration targets for the print process,etc.8

Methods - ISOA way, technique, or process for doing something.9

In simpler terms Standards– A car Specifications– How fast, mpg, which parts, what color Methods– How to assemble10

In our world Standard– A printed piece Specifications– What stock, which inks, matching what? Methods– How to get the look you want13

Document standardsWho built this?14

Document standards There aren’t any! But there are recommendations 15

Document standards - GIF 256 colors per file Websites Animations16

Document standards - PNG No CMYK support Websites17

PDF recommendations22

PDF recommendations PDF/X-1a– Least flexible– CMYK only– No ICC Profiles– No transparency or layers– Least likely to cause reproduction problems23

PDF recommendations PDF/X-4– Most flexible– CMYK, RGB, Gray, Spot colors– ICC Profiles allowed– Transparency and layers allowed– Most likely to cause reproduction problems24
