July 2018I S SISSUEU E ##44Last spring, the Board of Directors set some ambitious goalsfor the 2017-2018 season, perhaps not expecting to hit all ofthem, but figuring it was better to aim too high than too low. Butthrough your outstanding support, we were able to surpass themall, including raising over 18,000 to directly support the Club inspreading the Gospel and performing in China (In case you missedit, check out our Spring 2018 newsletter for testimonies and thankyous from the current men of the Club). None of that was possiblewithout the dedicated commitment of the Old Men. Thank you!Continuing that theme of commitment, I would like to extend aspecial thank you to Tom Hueber ‘82 for his selfless service on theBoard this past year and a half. One of our founding members,Tom has been an extraordinary resource for us. While we are sad tosee him go, we are also thrilled to welcome our newest Boardmember, Gregg Garman ‘71. You will also find a great profile onGregg inside. As we look toward the year ahead, the Board has great thingsplanned. Once again, we will be hosting semi-annual gatherings atHomecoming and the Home Concert. We hope to establish moreconnections between the current Club and our alumni. And in thisoff-tour year, we are going to be directing our fundraising effortstowards some of our long-term goals, including establishingscholarships, covering the cost of uniforms for New Men, andbuilding a nest egg for future tours (more details to follow in ourFall newsletter). If there is anything the Board can be doing for you in the yearahead, please do not hesitate to write to us atmgcalumni@my.wheaton.edu. One of the Presidents of the Glee Clubduring that time was Hudson T. Armerding, who would go on to become President of theCollege during the 60s and 70s. Mr. Frost wasalso close friends with Billy Graham, who wouldreportedly ask him to watch out for Ruth whenhe went on evangelistic tours. After graduating, he served his country as aChaplain in the Navy during World War II, andthen went on to serve the Kingdom of God as apastor in Illinois for 66 years, finally retiring at the age of 91. Buteven though he retired, he continues to teach Sunday School eachweek, even at the age of 98. Showing that through God all thingsare possible.PAGE 3

July 2018ISSUE #4‘O Captain, My Captain:’ An Interview with MGCPresidentAdam ReiskytlBy Tyler LongIn April 2018, Adam Reiskytl was elected to be the2018-2019 president of the Wheaton College Men’sGlee Club to rapturous applause. As the 2018 winner ofthe 4-Year Man award, Adam is an Applied HealthScience major from Minnetonka, MN. This interviewprovides a glimpse of the new captain behind the helmof the MGC:1) What are your long-term career goals? My long-term career goals are to go into medicine. I plan to go offto medical school after graduation from Wheaton but I have not yetdecided what kind of doctor I want to be or what I might want tospecialize in.2) What led you to run for the MGC President position?I decided to run for MGC President because I have just been soblessed by the club and uplifted by it that I want to continue thatuplifting, positive and blessing tradition that is the MGC to thecurrent club and to maintain the tradition to the future MGC as well.3) What aspect of Glee Club are you most passionate about?I am most passionate about the Fraternitas that comes fromfostering Integritas and Veritas. The more that I invest in the MGCthe more that I get out of it. I find that the more that I lean into theclub and my fellow members, the more I receive from them. Thecloser we grow together in truth and integrity as upstanding men ofGod, the closer we grow towards one another. That is very excitingto me.continued on the following pagePAGE 5

July 2018ISSUE #44) What new vision or changes do you want to bring to theMGC?My big vision that I hope to stress this year is growing close to oneanother as a club through spiritual growth focused on truth andintegrity so we can be a unifying voice for the Wheaton Collegecommunity and beyond. I feel like outreach is a true calling in everybeliever's life and the Men's Glee Club can be an incredible vehiclefor positive influence on the world around us. I think the best way inwhich to achieve lofty goals of a unified college community can beachieved by first rooting ourselves in the Lord and then engagingthe broader community from a solid foundation to make the mostlasting impact.5) What is your vision for the Glee Club's ministry next year (inits various forms)? How do you think the alumni can contributeto this vision? The first and most important way in which the alumni can contributeis through prayer. Pray for us to be unified in Christ as a club andthat we can be a positive impact on the community around. But alsoany other kind of support that you can such as coming to ourconcerts and singing with us at the end of every concert, coming toour MGC-Old Man Association get togethers and any other situationthat involves engagement between us because really we are just anextension of you guys.6) Fun question: What is the strangest thing you have evereaten? When I visited South Africa, I had some really strange little insectsthat I don't quite remember exactly what the insects were, but I doremember that they tasted kinda like chicken.PAGE 6

ISSUE #4July 2018A Look Back to the Homecoming Concert of 2018By: Dr. Mary HopperThe Glee Club Home Concert is always a wonderful time toshowcase the work the choir has done over the school year andto welcome alumni back to make connections with Glee Club Menover the years. This year the first part of theconcert featured two very interestingpieces and also featured several ofour talented seniors. Newton’sAmazing Grace by Bob Chilcott tellsthe story of John Newton and thepenning of the well-known hymn in avery dramatic setting. The sounds ofthe slaves on the ship, the tumultuousstorm and finally the still small voiceof the hymn paint a wonderful pictureMissed this soul-moving concert?of God’s grace even in the midst ofFind a link to a YouTube playlist of the concerthere!our sinful lives. Hiraeth by RogerAmes is setting of a poem by TimDavis, father of Timothy Davis ’18 a four-year man. The Welshword of the title describes a longing for home that is developedin the poem. The marriage of the text and music depict ourlonging for our eternal home.We also featured three of our graduating first tenors (what aloss!). Aiden Smith and Matthew Deeks sang a soulful I WantJesus to Walk with Me and Tom O’Connor brought down thehouse in Walk in Jerusalem.Of course, the high point of any homeconcert happens when Old Men join us onstage to sing E’en So Lord Jesus, QuicklyCome and A Mighty Fortress. I am alwaysmoved when I see men of different decadesjoin together as brothers to sing praises toGod.PAGE 7
