This could include charter boator land-based fishing, use rod & reel or other catchingequipment and be undertaken in saltwater or freshwaterlocations. 2020 — 2021FISHING TOURISMIN SOUTH AUSTRALIASouth Australian Fishing Tourism ResearchIn 2019, the SATC undertook research into the fishingtourism sector in South Australia with the followingobjectives: Gain a greater understanding of this sector in our stateInvestigate growth opportunities in our state forSouth Australian businesses to participate.In the development stage of the Strategy, consultationwas undertaken with existing South Australian fishingcharter operators across all regions via one on onemeetings and workshops.Findings from industry consultation suggests that thereis a disconnect between the existing charter fishing touroperators and the broader tourism industry. Following theconsultation process, key actions, recommendations, andopportunities for Fishing Tourism in South Australia wereidentified. These are outlined below: Increase engagement and partnership opportunitieswith the recreational fishing industry and the tourismsectorIncrease the number of South Australian fishingoperators with listings on the Australian Tourism DataWarehouse (ATDW)Create packages between fishing experiences andaccommodation providers to increase visitor participationFacilitate partnerships between travel trade and SouthAustralian fishing operatorsDevelop and support new and emerging Aboriginalfishing experiencesSeek ways to educate and increase industry capabilitiesof fishing operators in the tourism sectorIncrease marketing and promotional content of fishingtourism experiences in South Australia. 2F I S H I N G TO U R I S M FACT S H E E TFishing in South AustraliaSouth Australia has 5,000 kilometres of coastline anda variety of Fishing Tourism operators and experiencescan be found across the state. Visitors can undertake aFishing Tourism experience with a professional charteroperator just 15 minutes from Adelaide CBD at Glenelgand West Beach or other metropolitan locations includingPort Adelaide or Outer Harbor. Regionally, there are excellentcharter boat operators found in our beautiful coastalregions of Yorke Peninsula, Fleurieu Peninsula, LimestoneCoast, Eyre Peninsula as well as on Kangaroo Island.Consumers preferring land-based recreational fishingmay opt for some impressive beach, rock, and jettyfishing from the state’s expansive coastline. PIRSA manages South Australia’s fish stocksin partnership with industry and the community.P I R SA F i s h e r i e s a n d A q u a c u lt u re d eve l o p s a n dimplements policy and regulatory frameworks to maximisethe social and economic benefits and ensure the longterm sustainability of the state’s aquatic resources.PIRSA manages access to aquatic resources of thestate’s three fishing sectors, commercial, recreational(including Charter) and Aboriginal traditional. Like national parks,marine parks protect habitats, animals, plants, culturalheritage, and geological formations. Marine parks alsocontain sanctuary zones; these are areas of highconservation value set aside for conservation andlow-impact recreation. These areas only take up six percent of our waters and do not allow fishing, includingfishing tours.DEW issues permits for commercial tourism operationsoccurring in national parks, such as land-based fishingand in marine park sanctuary zones, such as swimmingwith marine mammals or boating tours. (SCBOOASA) isrecognised as the representative industry body of theCharter Boat Fishery. All licence holdersare invited to the Annual General Meeting and generalmeetings to discuss industry issues and develop policyin support of sustainable fishing, improving the industryand the experience of clients. Members are also keptinformed about current issues through emails and arecently established newsletter.merilyn@nmac.com.auRECFISH SARecFish SA is the nationally recognised peak bodyfor recreational fishing in South Australia. RecFish SAundertakes a range of projects like fish stocking, habitatenhancement, fishing clinics and citizen science projects,to benefit recreational fishers.Membership is made up of individuals and organisations,including fishing clubs and associations, regionalRecreational Fisheries Committees, coastal progressassociations, and recreational fishing related businesses.There are low cost and free membership options.
