The IGC control board, designed and manufactured exclusivelyfor Carrier rooftop units, providesbuilt-in diagnostic capability. An LED(light-emitting diode) simplifies troubleshooting by providing visual fault notification and system status confirmation. The IGC also contains an exclusiveanti-cycle protection for gas heat operation. After 4 continuous cycles on theunit high-temperature limit switch, thegas heat operation is disabled, and anerror code is issued. This feature greatly improves reliability of the rooftopunit. The IGC also contains burner control logic for accurate and dependablegas ignition. The LED is visible withoutremoving the unit control box accesspanel. This LED fault-notification system reduces service person troubleshooting time and minimizes servicecosts. The IGC also maximizes heatingefficiency by controlling evaporator-fanon and off delays.Tubular, dimpled gas heat exchangers optimize heat transfer for improvedefficiency. The tubular design permitshot gases to make multiple passesacross the path of the supply air. Thedimpled design creates a turbulent gasflow to maximize heating efficiency. The efficient in-shot burners andall ignition components are containedin an easily removable, compactassembly. The California Air Quality Management Districts NOx requirement of40 nanograms/joule or less is met on004-006 size Low NOx models. The extra thick Alumagard heatexchanger coating provides corrosionresistance and ensures long life(optional stainless steel heat exchangers are available). The unsightly appearance of fluestacks is eliminated and the effects ofwind on heating operations are diminished by the induced draft combustion

system. The inducer fan draws hotcombustion gas through the heatexchanger at the optimum rate for themost effective heat transfer. The heatexchanger operates under negativepressure, preventing flue gas leakageinto the indoor supply air.During the Heating mode, theevaporator-fan relay automaticallystarts the evaporator fan after the heatexchanger warms up to a suitabletemperature. The 30-second fan delayprevents cold air from entering thesupply duct system when the conditioned space is calling for heat tomaximize efficiency. The direct-spark ignition systemsaves operating expense when compared to pilot ignition systems. Nocrossover tube is required, therefore nosooting or pilot fouling problems canoccur. All standard units are designed fornatural gas, but an accessory LP (liquidpropane) conversion kit is available. All units have a flame rectificationsensor to quickly sense the burnerflame and ignite burners almost immediately. Fast shutdown is a certaintysince the sensor reacts quickly to anyflame outage or system failure. In theevent of a shutdown, an error code isissued at the IGC board.Safety is also assured due to theheating safety controls which will shutdown the unit if there is a problem. Ifexcessive temperatures develop, limitswitches shut off the gas valve. After4 continuous short cycles of the hightemperature limit switch, the IGCboard locks out the gas heat cycle toprevent any further short cycles. Thissafety feature is provided exclusively onCarrier rooftop units. The rolloutswitch also deenergizes the gas valve inthe event of a flame rollout.Quiet, efficient operation anddependable performanceCompressors have vibration isolatorsfor quiet operation. Efficient fan andmotor design permits operation at lowsound levels.Unit sizes 008-028 offer lower utilitycosts through part-load operation using 2 or 3 stages of cooling.Quiet and efficient operation is provided by belt-driven evaporator fans(standard on all units over 5 tons). Thebelt-driven evaporator-fan is equippedwith variable-pitch pulleys which allowadjustment within the rpm ranges ofthe factory-supplied pulleys.Increased operating efficiency isachieved through computer-designedcoils featuring staggered internallyenhanced copper tubes. Fins areripple-edged for strength, lanced, anddouble waved for higher heat transfer.Durable, dependableconstructionDesigned for durability in any climate, the weather-resistant cabinets are constructed of galvanized steel and bonderized, and all exterior panels are coated with a prepainted baked enamel finish. The paint finish is non-chalking,and is capable of withstanding ASTM(American Society for Testing and Materials) B117 500-hour Salt SprayTest. All internal cabinet panels areprimed, permitting longer life and amore attractive appearance for theentire unit.In addition, all size 004-014 unitsare designed with a single, continuoustop piece to eliminate any possibleleaks at seams or gasketing. Totally enclosed condenser-fan motors and permanently lubricated bearings provideadditional unit dependability.Easy installation andconversionAll units are shipped in the vertical duct configuration for fit-up tostandard roof curbs. The contractorcan order and install the roof curb earlyin the construction stage, before decisions on size requirements are made. All units feature a base rail designwith forklift slots and rigging holes foreasier maneuvering. Durable packaging protects all units during shipmentand storage. The units can be easily convertedfrom a vertical to a horizontal duct configuration by relocating the panels supplied with the unit (size 004-014 only). To convert 004-014 units fromvertical to horizontal discharge, simplyrelocate 2 panels. The same basic unitcan be used for a variety of applications and can be quickly modified atthe jobsite. To convert 015-028 units fromvertical to horizontal discharge, use theoptional horizontal supply/returnadapter roof curb (48HJ015,017 and48TM016-028) or accessory conversion kit (48HJ020-028).Convenient duct openings in theunit basepans permit side-by-side orconcentric duct connections (seeApplication data section) without requiring internal unit modification.NOTE: On units using horizontal supply and return, the accessory barometric relief or power exhaust MUST beinstalled on the return ductwork.Thru-the-bottom service connection capability comes standard withthe rooftop unit to allow power andcontrol wiring and gas connections tobe routed through the unit’s basepan, thereby minimizing roof penetrations(to prevent water leaks). (Thru-thebottom gas connection requires thruthe-bottom accessory kit.) Power, gasand control connections are made onthe same side of the unit to simplifyinstallation. The non-corrosive sloped condensate drain pan (size 004-014)permits either an external horizontalside condensate drain (outside the roofcurb) or an internal vertical bottomdrain (inside the roof curb). Bothoptions require an external, fieldsupplied P-trap.Standard 2-in. throwaway filtersare easily accessed through a removable panel located above the air intakehood. No tools are required to changeunit filters.Belt-driven evaporator-fan motors(optional on TM units under 6 tons)allow maximum on-site flexibility without changing motors or drives.Low voltage wiring connectionsare easily made thanks to the large terminal board which is located for quick, convenient access. In addition, color-coded wires permiteasy tracing and diagnostics.Proven compressor reliabilityDesign techniques feature computerprogrammed balance between compressor, condenser, and evaporator.Carrier-specified hermetic compressors are equipped with compressorovercurrent and overtemperature protection to ensure dependability.3

Features/Benefits (cont)All units have Carrier’s exclusiveAcutrol (004-014) or TXV (thermostatic expansion valve) metering device(015-028) which precisely controls refrigerant flow, preventingslugging and flood-back, while maintaining optimum unit performance. Refrigerant filter driers are standard. Integrated economizers andoutdoor-air dampersAvailable as options or accessories, economizers and manual outdoor-airdampers introduce outdoor air whichmixes with the conditioned air, improving indoor-air quality and often reducing energy consumption.During a first stage call for cooling, ifthe outdoor-air temperature is belowthe economizer control changeoverset point, the mixed-air sensor modulates the economizer outdoor-air damper open to take advantage of free cooling provided by the outside air. Whensecond-stage cooling is called for, thecompressor is energized inaddition to the economizer. If theoutdoor-air temperature is above thechangeover set point, the first stageof compression is activated and theeconomizer damper stays at minimumposition.Accessory upgrade kits allow forcontrol by differential dry-bulb temperature (outdoor vs return), outdoor airenthalpy changeover, or more precisedifferential enthalpy control.Units can be equipped with differenteconomizer options to meet specificcontrols applications. The factoryinstalled or field-installed EconoMi er IVand EconoMi er2 are available. TheEconoMi er IV is used with the standard rooftop unit controls and includesan industry standard, stand-alone,solid-state controller. The control can beused with a CO2 sensor for DCV (demand control ventilation) operation. Fordirect digital control (DDC) applications, the EconoMi er2 can be operated usingPremierLink controls or a third partycontroller. The EconoMi er2 includes4 to 20 mA actuator capability for demand control ventilation applications. All economizers incorporate a parallel blade, gear-driven damper systemfor efficient air mixing and reliable control. In addition, the standard damperactuator includes a spring return toprovide reliable closure on power loss. The economizers for sizes 004-014 are4equipped with up to 100% barometricrelief capability for high outdoor airflow operations. Economizers for unitsizes 004-014 are available, factoryinstalled, for vertical return only. Economizers for unit sizes 015-028 arecompatible for vertical or horizontal return. An optional field-installed barometric relief package is available forsize 015-028 units. In addition, single-stage powerexhaust is available as a field-installedaccessory for EconoMi er IV to helpmaintain proper building pressure. For units without economizer, yearround ventilation is enhanced by an optional manual outdoor-air damper. On004-014 units, a 25% or 50% manualdamper is available as a field-installedaccessory. Unit sizes 015-028 areequipped with a manual 25% damper.Service options (48HJ004017 and 48TM004-028 unitsonly)Servicing a rooftop unit has never beeneasier with the factory-installed serviceoptions for these rooftop units. Theseoptions include the following: Hinged access panels are providedfor the filter/indoor-fan motor, compressors, evaporator fan, andcontrol box areas. Quick access tomajor components is accomplishedby simply unlatching and swingingopen the various panels. Eachhinged panel is permanentlymounted to the unit, thereby eliminating the concern of a dropped orwind-blown panel puncturing delicate roof materials. The 4 extendedaccess panels are also equipped with‘‘tie back’’ retaining devices to holdthe door in the open position whileservicing the unit. An external, covered, 115-v GroundFault Interrupt (GFI) receptacle isprovided as a convenient powersource for drills, lights, refrigerantrecovery units, or other electricalservice tools. A factory-supplied stepdown transformer is connected tothe “load” side of the unit mainpower connection (size 004-014).For sizes 015-028, connect the outlet to a field-supplied and properlyfused branch circuit power supply. Slide out “motor-drive-blower”reduces service time (only on48HJ017).905 An integral non-fused disconnectswitch within the rooftop unitreduces installation time, labor andmaterial costs. Safety is assured byan interlock which prevents accessto the control box unless the switchis in the OFF position. In addition, the externally mounted handleincorporates power lockout capability to further protect servicepersonnel.Carrier PremierLink controlsadd reliability, efficiency, andsimplification (48HJ004-017and 48TM004-028 units only)The PremierLink direct digital controlscan be ordered as a factory-installedoption or as a field-installed accessory.Designed and manufactured exclusivelyby Carrier, the controls can be used toactively monitor and control all modesof operations, as well as monitor thefollowing diagnostics and features: unitnumber, zone temperature, zone setpoint, zone humidity set point, discharge air temperatures, fan status, stages of heating, stages of cooling, damper position, outdoor-air temperature, outdoor humidity level, filterstatus, fire shutdown status, IAQ (indoor air quality) set point, enthalpy status, differential enthalpy status, heat/cool lockout, cfm set point, preoccupancy purge, economizer controlsand early morning warm-up.This controller has a 38.4K baudcommunications capability and is compatible with ComfortLink controls,CCN (Carrier Comfort Network ) andComfortVIEW software. This comprehensive controls system allows allCarrier 3 to 25 ton rooftops with a3-wire communications bus to be daisychained together on a roof to create afully functional HVAC (heating,

ventilation, and air conditioning) automation system.neutral air for maximum dehumidification operation.Indoor-air quality (IAQ) beginswith Carrier rooftopsExclusive MoistureMi er dehumidification package(48HJ015,017 and 48TM016028 only)Sloped condensate pans minimizebiological growth in rooftop units inaccordance with ASHRAE Standard62. Two-inch filters with optional dirtyfilter indicator switch provide forgreater particle reduction in the returnair. The face-split evaporator coilsimprove the dehumidification capability of standard units, maximize buildinghumidity control.Optional proportional reacting CO2sensor is available with the EconoMi er IV outdoor air damper option/accessory to aid the IAQ benefits.Humidi-MiZer adaptivedehumidification system(48HJ004-014)Carrier’s Humidi-MiZer adaptive dehumidification system is an all-inclusivefactory-installed option that can beordered with any Weathermaster 48HJ004-014 rooftop unit to meetthe demand for providing a flexible andhigh performing solution to accommodate all of these design related issues. This system expands the envelope ofoperation of Carrier’s Weathermaster48HJ004-014 rooftop products toprovide unprecedented flexibility tomeet year-round comfort conditions. The Humidi-MiZer adaptive dehumidification system has the industry’s onlydual dehumidification mode setting. The Humidi-MiZer system includes twonew modes of operation. The Weathermaster 48HJ004-014 rooftop coupled with the Humidi-MiZer system iscapable of operating in normal designcooling mode, subcooling mode, andhot gas reheat mode. Normal DesignCooling mode is when the unit willoperate under its normal sequence ofoperation by cycling compressors tomaintain comfort conditions. Subcooling mode will operate to satisfy partload type conditions when the spacerequires combined sensible and ahigher proportion of latent load control. Hot Gas Reheat mode will operate when outdoor temperaturesdiminish and the need for latent capacity is required for sole humidity control.Hot Gas Reheat mode will provideThe MoistureMi er dehumidificationpackage is a result of recent advancesby Carrier in controlling comfort levels. This factory-installed option significantly improves the dehumidification capability of the rooftop unit and helps control humidity levels in the building. This option provides increased dehumidification by cooling the hot liquid refrigerant leaving the condenser coil. TheMoistureMi er package consists of asubcooling coil located on the leaving-airside of the evaporator coil. The locationof this coil in the indoor airstream enhances the latent capacity of the48HJ015 and 017 and 48TM016-028units by as much as 40%. Many buildings suffer from humidity damage orpoor indoor air quality due to humidconditions. The improved latent capacityprovided by the MoistureMi er optionreduces the building’s humidity, eliminating potential property damage and making the space more comfortable. The MoistureMi er option is theideal IAQ option for hot and humidregions. The operation of theMoistureMi er package can be controlled by a field-installed, wall mounted humidistat or Thermidistat device. The circuit activates only when needed(using the accessory humidistat) as opposed to some dehumidification systems that operate continuously. Thehumidistat can be set for any humiditylevel between 20% and 80% relativehumidity. The Thermidistat device canbe set for any humidity level between50% and 90% relative humidity.COBRA energy recoveryunits (sizes 004-014 only)Carrier’s factory-installed optionalCOBRA units recover energy from thebuilding exhaust air and pre-conditionventilation air for the rooftop unit during winter and summer operation. These units are designed to satisfy thehigher ventilation requirements andother building codes while minimizingenergy costs.Factory installation of the 62AQsection provides the benefit of reducedfield-installation time, single pointpower connections, and the assuranceof a factory test for the completeCOBRA unit. The COBRA energyrecovery section requires less maintenance than other energy recoverysystems and can be serviced by anyqualified refrigeration technician. The COBRA energy recovery unitsutilize Carrier’s high-efficiency48HJ004-014 rooftop units and provide 3 to 121/2 tons of cooling capacity with the capability to pre-condition600 to 3000 cfm of outdoor air.Indoor-air quality (IAQ) generally refers to the level of pollutants inside abuilding. These pollutants include cigarette smoke, carbon dioxide exhaled byoccupants, radon gas, car exhaust, paint fumes, and odors.Concern over increased indoor airpollutants has been spurred by severalissues: 1) changes in new buildingconstruction methods and retrofit ofolder buildings have reduced airinfiltration rates; 2) Synthetic materialsrelease airborne particles, odors, and chemicals; and 3) HVAC systemsthat bring in minimal fresh air.In 1989, IAQ concerns causedASHRAE to recommend increasedventilation for all public buildings.Simply introducing fresh air into abuilding, however, is not alwayspractical or cost effective. Additionalventilation can overload HVACsystems and increase energy costs.Carrier’s COBRA energy recoveryunit solves this dilemma by providingincreased fresh air while keepingincreased costs to a minimum. Inaddition, the COBRA energy recoveryunit helps reduce humidity levels, which helps to prevent deterioration ofbuilding materials and retards thegrowth of mold and mildew. The COBRA energy recovery unitprovides the best solution to retainingthe energy-conserving benefits of today’s tighter building constructionwhile improving indoor-air quality.5
