Pastor’s Corner by Frieda Bertello2St. Damian ParishToday’s gospel is the parable about the tax collector and the Pharisee praying in the temple. It should be afamiliar story. The Pharisee took his position and said, “Oh God, I thank you that I am not like the rest ofhumanity – greedy, dishonest, adulterous – or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay titheson my whole income.” Now, the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes toheaven but beat his breast and prayed, “O God, be merciful to me a sinner.”You can see that there’s quite a contrast between these two men on many levels as was their prayers. The Tax CollectorThe PhariseeA man of status and well respectedA man of ill reputation and disrespectedAn “insider”An “outsider”A righteous manA sinnerA man who fasted and prayedA man who preyed on his peopleI sometimes think the Pharisees get a bad rap. After all, they followed the rituals and customs of their faith tothe max. They were priests and holy men. Jews were required to fast only on the Day of Atonement, but thePharisees fasted twice a week, going without food and water from sunrise to sunset. Jews were required totithe only the production of their fields. Pharisees tithed everything. Their sacrifices were ongoing. The tax collectors, on the other hand, collected taxes for the despised Romans and often overcharged theirown people, keeping the profit for themselves. They were viewed as thieves, liars and traitors. It’s an easy contrast, right? Good guy/bad guy. But and here’s the holy but what is Jesus’s opinion of thetwo men?The Tax CollectorThe PhariseeStood in a place of prominenceStood in the shadowsPrayed out of his pride and arrogancePrayed for mercy and forgivenessArrogant and self-righteousHumble and contriteJesus says, “I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for whoever exalts himself will behumbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Don’tcha just love it when Jesus turnseverything upside down, inside out? There are so many wide contrasts between the two men. It would beeasy to finger-point to the tax collector and condemn him. However, you know the old saying, “When youfinger-point, remember there are three fingers pointing back at you!”It is so easy to make judgements. We do it all the time. I cringe when I catch myself finger-pointing. Even if Ido it in silence, God hears me. Thank God the Holy Spirit taps me on my conscience and tsk-tsks! God wantsus “to see as he sees”. It pinches sometimes because it requires self-truth, courage and humility; and thatword that we seldom like – surrender. So, be honest, have you checked your finger-pointing lately? In peace, Frieda

They are in needof any new or gently used blankets, especially homemade fleece blankets with the tied edges. The Coat Drive is a couple of weeks away, but if you areshopping soon for a new coat for yourself or a child, please keepthe Coat Drive in mind. Also if any Scout troop or any group orindividual would like to make tie blankets it would be greatlyappreciated. We will also be helping out the needy in Robbins through ProLabore Dei Mission. Thank you for your help with this project.Dear St. Damian Parishioners and School,Thank you for your donation of blankets for the SouthSuburban Humane Society! They were very thankful forthe blankets, and they werein need. Thedogs and catsappreciated thewarmth too!Sincerely,Sophia DeabelDear Pastoral Staff,I have belonged to St Damian Parish since I was a young child and always love attending Mass.In this busy world we all live in, sometimes it hard to step back and think of all it took to make a experience happen but we find it soenjoyable. So today I decided to send a Thank you!As we know it takes a lot of people both in front of and behind the operation to make a perfect experience for both parishioners andguest upon coming to mass each time. I realize and appreciate the efforts, the thought process, time and dedication to those whoget paid and or volunteer to make it all pull together. What a Job Well Done!I enjoy hearing Father Joe and others talking about bringing people back not only for the holidays but everyday. I grew up learningfrom my family experiences in difficult times that GOD is important every day and every day is a holiday. To wait for the date oncalendar or waiting for a birthday, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day Grandparent’s Day is misleading. People sometime do not realize untilits too late to understand God has made EVERYDAY our holiday and everyday is a SPECIAL day, once you realize that GOD ISAWESOME ALWAYS!Upon pulling into the lot, I enjoy the outside scene of trees, flowers, bushes and crosses. Upon walking in, I am greeted with warmhearts and smiles. But once I open the doors, I see how beautiful it looks with ALTAR DÉCOR. By the way, I love the Tree of Lifebehind the cross on the altar it really makes a statement. Each week after I say my prayers in silence, my ears open wide and heart beings to smile.I truly, along with others, enjoy the talent of Tony (Berardi), it sets the tone and scene for the start of one amazing experience withMass. The song selections and detail put into each Mass I cannot imagine, BUT truly ENJOY. Each Mass I make sure I arrive early topray in silence and stay until to the end to hear the talents of Tony and the two lovely ladies who play the violins.I sincerely appreciate everyone involved in making each Mass a wonderful experience which effects my spirit, mind and heart all daylong, each and every week.Signed, A Grateful Parishioner
