WHAT’S ON GUIDEThe new building is also to be a communityhub and includes a café, shop and garden, aswell as a gallery, with a programme of regularlychanging exhibitions and enables us to presentan imaginative and varied programme of eventsand activities in each season of the year.The Hold is a 20million project to createa new flagship heritage facility for Suffolk,and to reach new audiences young and oldacross the county.The Hold is a partnership between SuffolkCounty Council and University of Suffolk, withteaching spaces such as seminar rooms and a200-seat auditorium for university students,together with an education suite for schoolgroups and other organisations.The project was made possible by nearly 11million from the National Lottery HeritageFund, together with funding from SuffolkCounty Council, University of Suffolk, and manyother supporters and local history groups.The name The Hold evokes the hold of aship – where precious goods are safely stored;it is also a nod to the maritime location onIpswich’s historic waterfront and reflects thesecure, specialist storage in our strongrooms.These new document strongrooms use the latestpassive technology, ensuring that our nationallyrenowned collections are kept in exactly the rightconditions and offer capacity for the archives tocontinue to grow in coming years.The new search rooms offer a place for visitorsto do research and view documents from thecollection, whether it is baptism, marriage orburial registers, will and court records, to maps,photographs and so much more.Despite challenges along the way – notleast a global pandemic – our doors are nowopen. A journey lasting more than 10 yearshas delivered a Suffolk Archives Service forthe 21st Century and 900 years of Suffolk’shistory, 11 miles of shelving and some 90million pages of documents are stored safelyin The Hold for the future.The John Blatchly Local Studies Library offersa wealth of local history books and resources,named in honour of an esteemed localhistorian, author and headmaster.3
