TransportGuide-0418.qxp Layout 1 30/4/18 10:46 am Page 3WHAT ISSUSTAINABLETRANSPORT?Sustainable transport is any form of transportthat is fuel efficient, has health benefits andreduces the impact on the environment.Some examples of sustainable transport are walking, cycling, using public transport, bikeshare/hire, car-sharing, car-pooling, hybrid or electric cars and using shared transport such ascommunity transport. Using skateboards, skates and scooters to get around is also sustainabletransport.Why is sustainable transport good for us and the local community?Sustainable transport can provide us with new ways to get around, keep us socially connectedas we get to know our local community. It also helps us to share resources, use less petrol, besmart about car use, save money, have less environmental impact and keep us fit.Why do we need this guide?This guide seeks to inform the community about current transport options available in theBlue Mountains. Where to get information about community transport, how to access medicaltransport, which groups to join to get active and how to have a say on transport issues?Blue Mountains Transport Guide1

TransportGuide-0418.qxp Layout 1 30/4/18 10:46 am Page 4First EditionThe first edition of the guide in 2011 had a print run of 2,000 copies and feedback receivedwas that it fulfilled a gap in providing the community with localised information.Second EditionThe second edition of the guide was developed as part of the Getting Around in CommunityProject (GAIC), a sustainable transport project to provide updated information to BlueMountains residents about current transport options and activities.The GAIC project was a 3 year community development project between 2011 and 2014,auspiced by The Mid Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. GAIC partnered with communityorganisations, groups and individuals to pilot sustainable transport activities and workshops.The Blue Mountains Transport Guide second edition is a way of informing the local communityabout transport options and information.Third EditionThe third edition of this guide was updated by the Mid Mountains Neighbourhood Centre toensure information was current and to improve its accessibility online. At the time of publication they were seekingpeople who are interested in participating. Buses comein a range of sizes with a maximum of 61 seats. Low floor accessible buses are availablewith a capacity of 51 seats. Vehicles are available for hire to transportdisadvantaged groups within these areas at an affordable cost.Also listed on the register are licensed volunteer drivers who can provide driving servicesfor community groups without their own drivers. All drivers listed on the register haveundergone working with children and criminal checks, have the correct class of licenceand have provided an RTA Proof of driving record.
