NAIS WELCOMEWELCOME TO SEATTLE! We're so gladyou could join us here in the beautiful PacificNorthwest as we convene the NAIS Peopleof Color Conference and Student DiversityLeadership Conference. For first-time attendees and for those of youwho are joining us again, we reaffirm ourmission: PoCC is designed for people of color inindependent schools as they pursue strategiesfor professional and leadership development. It also offers networking opportunities forpeople of color and allies working to buildand sustain inclusive school communities. Each year we seek to recommit to ourintention to provide space for people ofcolor in independent schools to connect, commune, and build new skills and capacitiesthat support and advance their work. Thisyear, with the theme 1619. 2019. Before.Beyond. Amplifying Our Intelligence toLiberate, Co-create, and Thrive, we join in aninternational commemoration of the 400 yearssince the first British ship carrying capturedAngolans arrived in North America, initiatingenslavement of black African people. Thetheme also pays homage to the indigenouscultures and people present in North Americabefore 1619. It reminds us that black historyand indigenous history did not begin withatrocity, but with rich culture, community, andachievements that helped build this nation andworld in immeasurable ways. Our theme alsounderscores the resilience, radical hope, andvision that has served as a constant source andthrough-line for black, indigenous, and peopleof color between our past, present, and all thepossibility that lies beyond this moment. We hope you will take time over the next fewdays to make the most out of the conference.Whether you came to share your expertise, build and strengthen your professional network, bond with team members, or for PoCC's uniquerestorative experience, you'll find opportunitiesthat suit your needs. LOCAL COMMITTEECO-CHAIR WELCOMEON BEHALF OF THE ENTIRE PoCCLOCAL PLANNING COMMITTEE, WEWELCOME YOU TO SEATTLE, THELAND OF THE DUWAMISH PEOPLE!Stand on the land, breathe in the air, andfeel the power of the water and mountainsaround you. Regardless of where you aretraveling from, how you identify, or what yourimmigration status is, for the next few daysthis is your home. We are honored withthe beauty, goodness, and strength of thiscollective and the rich diversity that youbring to mark the 32nd year of this gathering. This year's theme is 1619. 2019. Before.Beyond. Amplifying Our Intelligence toLiberate, Co-create, and Thrive. The year2019 marks the 400-year anniversary ofthe first ship that brought our Africanancestors, against their will, to Jamestown. Before honors the First Nations peopleand their civilizations that existed beforethe colonizers. Beyond is the vision ofour collective future for which we are allco-creators. Our intelligence is the powerof the voices of people of color and ourrole in advancing humanity. Our theme is arallying call. When we tap into our collectiveintelligence, we liberate each other, createour future together, and thrive.2PoCC is an opportunity for people of colorto come together. Sometimes the conferenceinspires tough conversations, and thoseconversations can lead to breakthroughs, new ideas, and a path forward. It was in this spirit that groups like the Gangof Four and the second oldest chapter ofthe Black Panther Party worked to help buildsomething new in our city. They amplifiedtheir collective intelligence, their genius, and their brilliance to build a legacy usingliberatory platforms, giving voice and powerto the most vulnerable in our community. That spirit and that which you bring are herefor you to tap into, your home away fromhome, in the hopes that you are inspired, fueled, and equipped to make use of it whenyou are back in the place you call home. While you're here, we hope you'll get achance to explore Seattle's rich and diversecultures that make our city special. You canlearn more about the city's Native American,African American, Asian American, and Latinxhistories at several museums and culturalcenters in the city.WELCOME TO EMERALD CITY!DORI KINGE-CHIEH LINDirector of Inclusion andCommunity Engagement,Oregon Episcopal SchoolDirector of Diversity andCommunity & Directorof Hiring, University Prep#NAISP oCC #NAISSDLCMAHTABMAHMOODZADEHDirector of Diversity,The Overlake School
