The Institutelaunched its inauguralten-day Cyber BootCamp this summer,with 28 soldiersattending the grantfunded, cyberleadershipdevelopment program.At the end of thetraining, the soldierswere able to test toqualify for Sec andPenTest certifications.

JohnsonThe month of October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and this year CDCI alignedwith the effort of CISA and NCSA to promote the importance of cybersecurityawareness. This was the first annual celebration of this initiative for CDCI and we feltit best to focus our attention within our community of The Citadel. CDCI plannedseveral events during the month related to the following weekly topics: careers incybersecurity, preventing phishing attempts, and securing password presence. CDCIhosted and participated in several events throughout the month on campus.The kickoff event for Cybersecurity Awareness Month was the home football gamevs. VMI on October 2nd. This football game was also during Parents Weekend, and itwas an excellent time to share our efforts with parents also! Three cadets from theCDCI Cohort volunteered to be part of our rally towel giveaway for Citadel Footballfans. As fans entered Johnson Hagood stadium, they were welcomed by our cadetsand handed a spirit towel to use during the game and as a keepsake to remind themthat October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month!

Fall 2021 Citadel Career Fair Meet & GreetVeteran Student A. Hanulcik and Cadet A. LindenmeyerOn October 6th, CDCI joined the Fall2021 Citadel Career Fair along withour Career Center. CDCI studentsgreeted attendees and shared ourmessage of cybersecurity vigilance.Event attendees were given anopportunity to speak with two Cadetsand one Veteran student that aremembers of the CDCI Cohort. Thebooth was an excellent way to spreadour message of cybersecurityawareness, while also spreading joywith a few goodies!CDCI provided a variety of sour candy(in light of Halloween) labeled with ourbrand and the phrase “Don’t Be Sour,Be Cyber Smart!” CDCI lanyards, pensand pencils were also on hand at theevent.Fight the Phish! Midterm GiveawayDuring midterm week, Cadet Timothy Toomer andCadet Benjamin Race were present in Mark ClarkHall to distribute “phish” themed goodie bagscontaining a blue tang stress fish that reads“CDCI #fightthephish” and Goldfish crackers.Keeping with the midterm and Halloween themealso, we included sour candy in the giveawaybag. Our CDCI volunteers reminded their fellowcadets that October is Cybersecurity AwarenessMonth and shared ways they can prevent phishingattempts in their home, workplace, and school life.

Student-Led Cyber Lunch and Learn for Citadel Faculty and StaffCDCI held an event specifically for Citadel Faculty and Staff to provide lunchwhile allowing our students to share their cybersecurity knowledge on theweekly topics being highlighted this month. During the luncheon on October13th, 50 faculty and staff members gathered in the Riverview Room in CowardHall to learn about careers in cybersecurity, ways to prevent phishing, theimportance of creating safe and secure online passwords, and other valuabletips for protecting their cyber presence.The Cadets also staged each table with a “Cyber Quiz” via QR code to test theLunch and Learn attendees. Many attendees completed the quiz whichincluded personal information as responses. The Cadets were able to use thequiz as a reminder to always be careful when answering questions like “Whatstreet did you grow up on?” and “What are your pets names?”

CDCI Mentors and MentorshipsOur CDCI Student Cohortrecognizes that a vital element oftheir success as they prepare tojoin the cyber workforce will becollaborating with cybersecurityexperts that are active in the field.CDCI will host a Mentor’s Dinneron October 18th for several invitedguests that will guide the membersof our Cohort as they prepare toenter the cyber workforce.Cadet Trey Stevens is pictured here mentoringstudents at one of the local high schools inpreparation for Cyber Patriot.Just as mentors are incredibly importantto ensure the success of our Cohortmembers, so too is the opportunity for theCDCI Cohort to mentor others. Thissemester has afforded the chance forCDCI Cohort Cadets and Students to lendtheir time to mentor members of the localhigh school community, as well asfreshman here at The Citadel that areinterested in pursuing cybersecuritycareers. CDCI Cyber Lab UpdateThe CDCI team is happy to report that Netlab is now fully operational andhas been utilized throughout our Fall 2021 semester for all segments ofCSCI 227 and CSCI 410. The labs and trainings were first put in place overthe summer for our National Guard Camps held at The Citadel to assist inPenTest and Sec certification training. The course content modulesrange from Cisco, Red Hat, Palo Alto, VMware and NDG Ethical Hacking.We currently have 23 different courses available for students andprofessors to utilize both inside and outside of the classroom, at anygiven time. Recently, CDCI began to provide access to these labs andtrainings to the Cyber Patriot Team of cadets at Ashley Ridge High School.The long-term plan is to keep expanding the use of this platform.

Citadel Department of Defense Cyber Institute. The Institute launched its inaugural ten-day Cyber Boot Camp this summer, with 28 soldiers attending the grant - funded, cyber leadership development program. At the end of the training, the soldiers were able to test to qualify for Sec and PenTest certifications.
