OPEN MAINFRAME PROJECT ANNUAL REPORT 20202019 YEAR REVIEW ANNUAL REPORT1

OPEN MAINFRAME PROJECT ANNUAL REPORT 2020OPEN MAINFRAME COMMUNITY,2020 certainly was a year of challenge that impacted each and every one of us. The worldwidepandemic shifted the way we work, the way we live and the way our children learn. Quarantined athome was stressful but that stress was exacerbated when the long standing racial tensions in the U.S.came to a forefront. We dealt with the emotions differently but most of us reflected on these issues andmade an effort to ensure our community is a safe place for collaboration as individuals around the globeturned to open source. This year, more than ever, open source became an outlet for people to virtually connect with others.Communities were strengthened as new collaborators joined projects and new initiatives were formed. Our role at the Open Mainframe Project is to be the steward of these efforts, and every day I work withthis community I am humbled by the professionalism, generosity, and desire to ensure this ecosystemcan sustain for decades to come. I personally want to thank each and every one of you who havecontributed to those efforts, especially in this unusual difficult time. Your talent and dedication is thereason we nearly doubled our projects, grew our membership base, and had an absolutely stellar firstever Open Mainframe Summit. This annual report will give you an overview of all the accomplishments the Open Mainframe Projectcommunity made this year despite the challenges and the quotes that got us through it. We are proud of ourcommunity and hope this gives you a look at how hard we all worked and the benefits to the ecosystem.“Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you, spend a lot of time with them, and it will changeyour life forever.”Cheers to the new year!John Mertic, Director of Program Management at the Linux Foundation2

OPEN MAINFRAME PROJECT ANNUAL REPORT 2020“WHEN THE GOING GETSTOUGH, THE TOUGHGET GOING.”Len Santalucia,Open Mainframe ProjectGoverning Board Chair,Vicom InfinityWhat has struck me the most is that in themidst of a worldwide pandemic, the mainframecommunity continued to collaborate andsupport each other. For example, when theneed for COBOL talent came from our state andlocal governments, the Open Mainframe Projectcommunity, answered the call by creating twoforums, educational materials and a dedicatedworking group to push awareness and training.Another example is when the CBT Tape project, which has been around for 45 years, neededthe infrastructure to continue advancing for thenext 45 years. Open Mainframe Project steppedforward to provide it resources through membercompany Vicom Infinity.NEW PROJECTSOpen Mainframe Projects Technical AdvisoryCommittee was certainly busy this year! Eachnew project is presented to the TAC, whichconsists of technical volunteers from membercompanies, reviewed and approved. This year, the TAC helped more than double the numberof Open Mainframe Projects moving from 8 to17 by launching CBT Tape, COBOL TrainingProgram, COBOL Working Group, GenevaERS,Mainframe Open Education, Software DiscoveryTool, and Tessia. These new projects joinADE, Ambitus, ATOM, Feilong, Mentorship,Polycephaly, TerseDecompress, Zowe, ZoweConformance Program and Zorow as projectsled by the Open Mainframe community.3The roots of the open source movementtrace back to SHARE but much of thatinitial collaboration came together with CBT(Connecticut Bank and Trust) Tape in 1975.CBT Tape is an open library of free softwaredistribution for the IBM mainframe MultipleVirtual Storage (MVS) and OS/390 operatingsystem environment that continues to growand get updated. With each iteration of thesetapes, new and ingenious tools and examplesbecame available. Now under the umbrella,CBT Tape will be able to leverage OpenMainframe Project resources to be betterequipped to engage with the next generationof mainframers. The COBOL Training Course offersintroductory-level materials with Microsoft’sVisual Studio Code editor (VS Code) andhands-on labs. It was created directly inresponse to the demand for more COBOLtalent and compliments the Q&A forumand volunteer resource, which immediatelyhad hundreds of participants when it wentlive in April. At the end of December 2020,the forum listed more than 1700 COBOLvolunteers, mentors, and experts. Thiscourse, which continued to gain momentumthis year, offers real-world Enterprise COBOLdemonstrations to work on. It will continue tobe refreshed as more materials and resourcesare created.

OPEN MAINFRAME PROJECT ANNUAL REPORT 2020To further advance the promotion of COBOL,Open Mainframe Project launched its firstever working group. In September, the COBOLWorking Group was created to addressmisunderstanding about the technology andpromote its continued usage, learning anddiscourse. By the end of 2020, the group had84 active participants. There are many different open source softwareavailable on Linux for the mainframe that itis often overwhelming for developers. Forthose who don’t know where to begin, OpenMainframe Project’s Software Discovery Toolwill help match developers with the bestopen source software that meets their needs.Developers can search through open sourcesoftware for zArchitecture/s390x for any Zoperating system from any source, any repo, anywhere, in one place. For decades, the technology industry hasstruggled to replenish the workforce withtalented, young professionals. Open MainframeProject’s Mainframe Open Education projectdrives access to legacy systems through asimple platform that offers up-to-date materialsand collaboration. With a clear learning pathand the availability of materials, this projectaims to help fill the gap with young mainframeprofessionals that will step into the rolesvacated by their retiring colleagues.4GenevaERS is the single pass optimizationengine for extraction and reporting on z/OS. This project offers businesses a high-levelreporting solution uniquely tuned for big datascanning and improved financial transparencyfor better decision-making. GenevaERS cancreate multiple outputs to enhance analysis andproduce high-level, scaled and integrated reportsfor some of the largest businesses in the world.Tessia is an open source project for Z resourcemanagement and automated installation ofLinux distribution, manages relationshipsbetween Z datacenter resources and allocatesthem to specific projects and users accordingto a role-based schema. Using theseresources, Tessia can be included into existingpipelines and with pre-release distributionsand drive faster release cycles and adoptionof new technologies. Additionally, it enablesdevelopers to effortlessly bring up theirenvironments or try out new releases beforemigration. In general, the mission of the newproject improves experience with Linux onZ, which in turn facilitates faster adoption ofopen source on Z platform. There has never been a better time toimplement open source on the mainframe.Whether you are part of the memberecosystem or participate in the community,we appreciate your help in keeping OpenMainframe Project as an industry focal pointand resource that will hopefully hold thisleadership position for many years to come.

OPEN MAINFRAME PROJECT ANNUAL REPORT 2020“EVERY SUCCESS STORYIS A TALE OF CONSTANTADAPTATION, REVISIONAND CHANGE.”Stacey Miller, Co-Chairof the Open MainframeProject MarketingCommittee, SUSEHappy 5th Anniversary! When the LinuxFoundation launchedthe Open Mainframe Project in 2015, we hadone project to advance mainframe technology.Today, we are an umbrella project that ishome to 17 different open source projects including a COBOL Working Group and a ZoweConformance Program. This is essentially at a1600 percent increase since launch!in Tech panel, COBOL sessions, new mainframerjourney, and project overview sessions forPolycephaly, Feilong, Zowe, and Ambitus. The transparency report can be found hereand all of the videos can be watched here. And while we were sad to not meet in personin NYC, we were thrilled about our first event. We look forward to replicating this success in2021. Stay tuned for the details. So, while 2020 had its unexpected twists andturns, the Open Mainframe Project was ableto pivot and thrive -- ending the year evenstronger than we began!“UNITY IS STRENGTH.WHEN THERE IS TEAMWORKAND COLLABORATION,WONDERFUL THINGSCAN BE ACHIEVED.”David Stokes, OpenMainframe ProjectGoverning BoardMember, BroadcomBut that’s not all. 2020 was the year of thevirtual event and online connections. The OpenMainframe Project was set to host our inauguralevent in New York City but we quickly had totransition to a digital event. With leadership fromthe Linux Foundation event team, the OpenMainframe Project Program Committee, Platinumsponsors Broadcom, IBM, and Rocket Software;Gold sponsors SUSE and Vicom Infinity and Silversponsor Micro Focus, we pulled off a flawlessinaugural Open Mainframe Summit in September.More than 380 registrants from 176 companiesjoined the two-day conference that featured 36sessions, including keynotes, breakout sessions, and lightning talks that had a mix of executiveand technical content. Some of the most popularsessions as noted by attendees were the Women5The Open Mainframe Project, which launchedwith 12 founding members, is now comprisedof 41 business and academic organizations. That’s an increase of 225 percent in five years. In fact, when compared to last year, the projectecosystem grew 14 percent with new memberscoming in with extensive technology, mainframe,COBOL and open source expertise.Thank you to HCL Technologies, Micro Focus,Red Hat, Software Engineering GmbH andYADRO for joining the Open Mainframe Projectecosystem this year. Several of the membersimmediately jumped into contributing toprojects including the COBOL Working Group, the COBOL Training Program and Zowe.

Big thanks to CNCF for the original project development of the landscapeapp, along withOpen Mainframe Project community members helping with the categorization and curationof the initial entries.Open Mainframe LandscapeSee the interactive landscape 03:41:35Z 1c0e5cfLinuxOMP Incubatingz/VMOMP IncubatingProjectsOPEN MAINFRAME PROJECT ANNUAL REPORT 2020OUR LANDSCAPEz/OSOMP GraduatedOMP IncubatingOMP IncubatingOMP IncubatingToolsOMP IncubatingLearning and MentoringGreyed logos are not open sourceOtherOMP GraduatedOMP IncubatingOMP GraduatedOMP IncubatingOMP Working GroupOMP IncubatingOMP IncubatingOMP IncubatingThis landscape is intendedas a map to explore opensource projects within themainframe industry, andalso shows the memberl.openmainframeproject.orgcompanies of the OpenMainframe Project.OMP IncubatingCLI ZOWE V1API MediationLayer 2019App Framework2019CLI 2019Zowe ConformantAPI Mediation Layer ZOWE V1App FrameworkZOWE V1These new members join Platinum Members ADP, Broadcom, IBM, Rocket Software and SUSE;Silver Members Canonical, GT Software, Phoenix Software, Precisely, Vicom Infinity and ZossTeam LLC as well as 19 academic institutions such as Beijing Institute of Technology, MaristCollege, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, South China University ofTechnology and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).The core of Open Mainframe Project is collaboration and, as we strive to build awareness andunderstanding of the power of mainframes, we also works closely with several of our AssociateMembers of like-minded organizations including Academic Mainframe Consortium, EMA Fit forMainframe, Guide Share Europe, Guide Share Europe UK Region and SHARE.With the strength of this ecosystem and a passionate community, we will continue to push theadoption of open source on the mainframe and all of the technologies that go with it.6

OPEN MAINFRAME PROJECT ANNUAL REPORT 2020“ALONE, WE MAKE SMALLCONTRIBUTIONS; TOGETHER,OUR CONTRIBUTIONSTRANSFORM THE ECOSYSTEM”Coreen Wilson, OpenMainframe ProjectMarketing CommitteeMemberThe Open MainframeProject has unitedtechnology giants, academic institutions, andstartups from all over the world. It has alsocreated a community of diverse and talenteddevelopers, students and innovators who arepassionate about technology related to themainframe. Zowe is a great example of how tobring both builders and consumers together inan active and popular project to collaborativelytailor new technology to the user experience.Additionally, Zowe Explorer was used in theMaster the Mainframe program and OpenMainframe Project’s COBOL Training Coursethis year. This provided an open and easyaccess for students and developers who werelearning mainframe skills for the first time orthose who wanted a refresher. The Zowe community continues to grow strong withalmost 231 committers, more than 27,680 commitsand more than 1,650 developers exchanginginformation, best practices and questions on Slack. This year, the project continued its momentumand achieved several milestones. Zowe, an opensource software framework for the mainframe thatstrengthens integration with modern enterpriseapplications, released version 1.17 with several7notable features and enhancements. Learn morein the release notes. The Zowe Leadership Committee also updatedand revamped the Zowe Conformance Program, which has helped Open Mainframe Projectmembers and community participantsincorporate Zowe with new and existingproducts that enable integration of mainframeapplications and data across the enterprise. In this refreshed program, each extensiblecomponent’s test criteria was modified to allowexploitation of the Zowe Long Term Support (LTS)capabilities. Applications that satisfy the newtesting criteria requirements earn a Zowe “V1”conformance badge. By the end of 2020, therewere 44 products from Broadcom, IBM, PhoenixSoftware, Rocket Software, Software Engineeringhave implemented extensions based on theZowe LTS framework and earned these membersconformance badges. With everyone home bound this year, OpenMainframe Project launched a 3-month virtualhackathon that aimed to educate developers, students, engineers and makers around theworld about the Zowe framework and how it canbe used to create enterprise applications.

OPEN MAINFRAME PROJECT ANNUAL REPORT 2020Three teams participated in the Hackathon; TeamAutomazing (HCL Technologies), Team Puzzles(Broadcom), and Team CZCS (IBM) you canlearn more about their project presentations onYouTube. The winner of the Hackathon was TeamPuzzles, who presented their solution at OpenMainframe Summit. The video can be found here.“DIVERSITY IS THE ART OFINDEPENDENTLY THINKINGTOGETHER.”Yvette A LaMar,Co-Chair of the OpenMainframe ProjectMarketing CommitteeDiversity andInclusion is a veryimportant topicthat rose to top ofmind across the globe in 2020. From an OpenMainframe Project perspective, promotingdiversity and encouraging inclusiveness inour projects and our community drives betterresults. We get more opinions, differentperspectives, innovative ideas – resultingin greater outcomes. We see diversity andinclusion not only as a critical part of where oursociety needs to go but also is a critical part ofour community’s success.8The lack of diversity in technology is especiallymore notable in the mainframe industry. In fact, OMP partnered with SHARE againthis year on their Women in IT initiativeat both the Fort Worth and the DigitalSHARE conferences. Both events were verysuccessful. In addition, the OMP hosted aWomen in IT panel during the Open SourceSummit Europe focusing on Diversity inDiversity. Six accomplished women spokeabout how they got their start in technologyand what led them to their current roles. Youcan view the video here. From an OMP organizational perspectivewomen comprise 35% of our open mainframeproject leadership through our governingboard, technical advisory council, outreachcommittee, and Linux Foundation staff. Thispercentage increases when you add in theleading contributors in various projects. Thoughthis isn’t perfect, we continue to strive for equalrepresentation and are committed to havingdiverse voices heard in our community throughmore partnerships and activities next year.

OPEN MAINFRAME PROJECT ANNUAL REPORT 2020“EDUCATION IS THE MOSTPOWERFUL TOOL WHICHYOU CAN USE TO CHANGETHE WORLD.”Bob Dahlberg, Chair ofthe Open MainframeProject MentorshipProgramIn addition to ourcommitment to diversity and inclusion, OpenMainframe Project enhanced our trainingresources this year. The project quickly workedwith members to assemble the COBOL TrainingCourse that offers a refresher or introductoryoverview of the language to new or returningdevelopers. As mentioned, Mainframe Open Education willoffer a clear learning path that rejuvenates theworkforce and drives access to business-criticalsystems. The project brings new talent togetherwith mainframe experts and learning resourcesto educate and train the next generation ofmainframers. The Mainframe Open Education project is closelyaligned with the Open Mainframe Project’sMentorship program. Launched in 2017, theMentorship program has helped more than 40students learn more and gain experience withLinux, open source, and mainframes. Studentswork closely with mentors from membercompanies like Broadcom, IBM, Rocket Software,SUSE and Vicom Infinity on a variety of opensource projects to expand their mainframeknowledge and skills as a critical stepping stoneto a productive and rewarding career. This year,Open Mainframe Project welcomed 11 newmentees in May and delivered a presentation atthe Linux Foundation’s Open Source SummitEurope. The videos can be found here.9“TURNING CONVERSATIONSINTO COLLABORATIONACROSS A COMMUNITYBUILDS BETTER SKILLSFOR BETTER LIVES.”Maemalynn Meanor,Senior PublicRelations Manager,The Linux FoundationOpen MainframeProject’s mission isand will always beto serve as a focal point for the deploymentand use of Linux and Open Source in amainframe computing environment and increasecollaboration across the mainframe communityto develop shared resources. The only reasonthe project has been successful in doing this forthe last five years is the open source communitythat welcomed us with open arms. Withoutthe community, we wouldn’t have been ableto become an umbrella organization under theLinux Foundation like CNCF, Hyperledger or LFEdge. This year, we spent a lot of time promotingthe community, their contributions to the projectand highlighting various members and leaders. For example, the Zowecommunity launched aMedium Blog this yearthat offers insight intoall of the capabilitiesof the frameworkthrough in-depth tutorials, highlighting featuresor sharing compatible member products andservices available in the ecosystem. Written byZowe contributors for the community, there aremore than 40 blogs from a variety of leaders fromOpen Mainframe Project member companiesBroadcom, IBM and Rocket Software. Managedby the Open Mainframe Project and a team oftechnical editors, we are always looking formore writers.
