Plus, MSUFCU has a mobile app, eDeposit for checks, eAlertsfor your account transactions, and Apple PayTM, Samsung Pay, and Android PayTM for yourMSUFCU Visa Debit and Credit Cards.MSUFCU is the largest University-based credit union in the world with over 230,000 membersworldwide. Along with this freedom comes the importance of spending money wisely. Here arethe top 10 financial tips designed to give Spartans an edge on mastering personal finance and tohelp you have a successful freshman year:Set Up Your Financial Structure. Open a free checking account with MSU Federal CreditUnion so you’ll have access to surcharge-free ATMs all over campus and nationwide onthe CO-OP Network. Use the MSUFCU Mobile app to access your account, makeremote deposits, and receive texts about transactions and activity on your account. Plus, set up Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, or Android Pay for your MSUFCU Visa Debit and CreditCards.Create a Budget. Keep track of your income from all sources: parents, job, financial aid, scholarships, and student loans. Then estimate your expenses: books, tuition, entertainment, food, etc. Make sure your income is larger than your expenses; you’llneed some extra money for emergencies and savings. Remember, there are many funactivities to keep you busy in college and most are free to students.Use Credit Wisely. Understand the responsibilities and benefits of credit. Startestablishing credit with a low-limit, low interest rate card like the MSUFCU Platinum VisaCredit Card. Remember that a credit card is a loan, not free money. That means that anypurchases you make have to be repaid. If you don’t pay your bill in full and on time, youwill accrue interest charges and late fees in addition to the amount you spent.Establishing a solid credit history now can benefit you later with lower interest rateswhen you’re looking for a new car or your first house.Save, Save, Save. Life happens, and it’s important that you have some money savedwhen your laptop calls it quits, or when you’ll need professional clothing for aninterview. The 50/30/20 rule works! 50% of your income goes to your needs, 30% toyour wants, and 20% to your savings.Protect Yourself. Don’t trust anyone with your money or account. Keep your cards in asafe place and don’t leave cash lying around. Be skeptical of classmates, friends andespecially strangers who ask to use your debit or credit card. Selling your card tosomeone is illegal and could cost you a lot of money, or worse, land you in trouble withthe law.Check Out MSUFCU’s Financial 4.0. Financial literacy can seem overwhelming. Theexperts at MSUFCU’s Financial 4.0 will help you with the basics and provide you withtips and tricks to get you on the right foot. It’s financial advice by MSU students for MSUstudents. Check out their blogs, videos, and contests at www.msufcu.org/financial40.i

MSU Federal Credit UnionScholarships. Apply for as many scholarships as you can. Have your resume, letters ofrecommendation, and your transcripts ready to submit with your scholarshipapplications. Read and reread your applications before submitting them, and rememberto apply, apply, apply.Get a Job. The money you earn from working part time while you are in school can helpyou pay for the things that you want and need. Look for jobs both on and off campuswith part-time hours. Summer internships provide you with work experience and canhelp you save money you can use during the school year. It’s time to start working andsaving. You’ll be doing it for the rest of your life.Look for Ways to Spend Less. Take advantage of student discounts from localbusinesses including travel, food, books, clothing, and entertainment. Don’t spend extramoney on food if you have a meal plan. Check out the free activities on MSU’s campus, including the free MSU Campus Cinema for the latest movies that you can attend withyour friends.Don’t Buy New. If you live on campus, there are secondhand stores that can helpfurnish your residence hall room for a fraction of the cost of new. You’d be surprisedat the awesome items you’ll find at yard sales. Talk with your roommate about what heor she can provide for your room, too. Two pocketbooks are better than one.The good money habits you establish in college will serve you well during your years here andwell into your post-graduate life. Make learning how to use money intelligently a part of yourcollege education. For more information about the MSU Federal Credit Union visit pages 44-47 of the Campus Lifesection.ii
