Oneprogram targets nonprofit organizationsand small businesses and teaches themto use technologies to achieve energyefficiency. Another encourages themto make use of green strategies tomitigate pollution problems. Programfunds have paid for the installment of 13green roofs (more than any other borough),as well as for tree planting and othergreen activities. Through the ElectricTransportation Program, BOEDCMario Burgerprovided a grant as well as a low-interestloan to purchase the first all-electricrefrigerated truck in New York State. The Borough President’s officestrongly encourages sustainable development and promotes projects that meet thehighest level of environmental certification.Recently, a federal grant was obtained andused to train residents for work in thefield of energy efficiency. The boroughis also working closely with FordhamUniversity to bring a co-generation plantto its campus, thereby reducing pollution, lowering the demand upon the electricalgrid and creating dozens of new“green” jobs. The Bronx leadership is also com-FordhamPlazaJohn RoemerMario Burgermitted to reinvesting in the borough’sbrownfields.
