Analysts presentedtheir findings during Gartner Symposium/ITxpo,which took place in Orlando late last year.Gartner defines a strategic technology trendas one with substantial disruptive potential thatis beginning to break out of an emerging stateinto broader impact and use, or which are rapidlygrowing trends with a high degree of volatility.“The Intelligent Digital Mesh has been a consistent theme for the past two years and continuesas a major driver through 2019. Trends undereach of these three themes are a key ingredient indriving a continuous innovation process as part ofa ContinuousNEXT strategy,” said David Cearley, vice president and Gartner Fellow. “For example, artificial intelligence (AI) in the form of automated things and augmented intelligence is beingused together with IoT, edge computing and digital twins to deliver highly integrated smart spaces. This combinatorial effect of multiple trendscoalescing to produce new opportunities anddrive new disruption is a hallmark of the Gartnertop strategic technology trends for 2019.”Some of the top strategic technology trendsfor 2019 that Gartner identified are:036-42 CTO-presupp.indd 42AUTONOMOUS THINGSAutonomous things, such as robots, dronesand autonomous vehicles, use AI to automatefunctions previously performed by humans.Their automation goes beyond the automation provided by rigid programing models andthey exploit AI to deliver advanced behaviorsthat interact more naturally with their surroundings and with people.AI-DRIVEN DEVELOPMENTThe market is rapidly shifting from anapproach in which professional data scientistsmust partner with application developers to createmost AI-enhanced solutions to a model in whichthe professional developer can operate alone usingpredefined models delivered as a service. This provides the developer with an ecosystem of AI algorithms and models, as well as development toolstailored to integrating AI capabilities and modelsinto a solution. Another level of opportunity forprofessional application development arises asAI is applied to the development process itself toautomate various data science, application development and testing functions. By 2022, at least 40percent of new application development projectswill have AI co-developers on their team.DIGITAL TWINSA digital twin refers to the digital representation of a real-world entity or system. By 2020,Gartner estimates there will be more than 20 billion connected sensors and endpoints and digitaltwins will exist for potentially billions of things.Organizations will implement digital twins simplyat first. They will evolve them over time, improving their ability to collect and visualize the rightdata, apply the right analytics and rules, andrespond effectively to business objectives.IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCEConversational platforms are changing theway in which people interact with the digitalworld. Virtual reality (VR), augmented reality(AR) and mixed reality (MR) are changing theway in which people perceive the digital world. This combined shift in perception and interaction models leads to the future immersive userexperience.DIGITAL ETHICS AND PRIVACYDigital ethics and privacy is a growing concernfor individuals, organizations and governments.People are increasingly concerned about howtheir personal information is being used by organi-zations in both the public and private sector, andthe backlash will only increase for organizationsthat are not proactively addressing these concerns.QUANTUM COMPUTINGQuantum computing (QC) is a type of nonclassical computing that operates on the quantum state of subatomic particles (for example, electrons and ions) that represent informationas elements denoted as quantum bits (qubits). The parallel execution and exponential scalability of quantum computers means they excelwith problems too complex for a traditionalapproach or where a traditional algorithmswould take too long to find a solution. Industriessuch as automotive, financial, insurance, pharmaceuticals, military and research organizationshave the most to gain from the advancementsin QC. In the pharmaceutical industry, forexample, QC could be used to model molecularinteractions at atomic levels to accelerate timeto market for new cancer-treating drugs or QCcould accelerate and more accurately predict theinteraction of proteins leading to new pharmaceutical methodologies. To learn more, visit gartner.com.4/11/19 5:50 PM
