The LessonsA Reading from the Book of LeviticusLeviticus 19:1-2, 15-18The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel andsay to them: You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God amholy. You shall not render an unjust judgment; you shall not bepartial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice youshall judge your neighbor. You shall not go around as aslanderer among your people, and you shall not profit bythe blood of your neighbor: I am the Lord. You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; youshall reprove your neighbor, or you will incur guiltyourself. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudgeagainst any of your people, but you shall love yourneighbor as yourself: I am the Lord. The Word of the Lord.People: Thanks be to God

Psalm 1 (In Unison)1 Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel ofthe wicked, *nor lingered in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seats of the scornful!2 Their delight is in the law of the Lord, *and they meditate on his law day and night.3 They are like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do notwither; *everything they do shall prosper.4 It is not so with the wicked; *they are like chaff which the wind blows away.5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright whenjudgment comes, *nor the sinner in the council of the righteous.6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, *but the way of the wicked is doomed.6

Reading from The Letter of Paul To The ThessaloniansThessalonians 2:1-8You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming toyou was not in vain, but though we had already suffered andbeen shamefully mistreated at Philippi, as you know, we hadcourage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God inspite of great opposition. For our appeal does not springfrom deceit or impure motives or trickery, but just as wehave been approved by God to be entrusted with themessage of the gospel, even so we speak, not to pleasemortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. As youknow and as God is our witness, we never came with wordsof flattery or with a pretext for greed; nor did we seekpraise from mortals, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse tenderly caringfor her own children. So deeply do we care for you that weare determined to share with you not only the gospel of Godbut also our own selves, because you have become very dearto us.The Word of the Lord.People: Thanks be to God

The GospelCelebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christaccording to MatthewMatthew 22:34-46People: Glory be to thee, O LordWhen the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced theSadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, alawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, whichcommandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him,“’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, andwith all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is thegreatest and first commandment. And a second is like it:‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these twocommandments hang all the law and the prophets.”Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesusasked them this question: “What do you think of theMessiah? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The sonof David.” He said to them, “How is it then that Davidby the Spirit calls him Lord, saying,‘The Lord said to my Lord,“Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet”’?If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?” No onewas able to give him an answer, nor from that day didanyone dare to ask him any more questions.8Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord.People: Praise to you, Lord Christ

All glory be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father, for that thou, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine onlySon Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for ourredemption; who made there, by his one oblation ofhimself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficientsacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of thewhole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospelcommand us to continue, a perpetual memory of that hisprecious death and sacrifice, until his coming again. For in the night in which he was betrayed, he tookbread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, andgave it to his disciples, saying, "Take, eat, this is myBody, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance ofme."After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said theblessing, gave it to his friends and said: “Drink this, all ofyou this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, pouredout for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do thisfor the remembrance of me.”Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, according to theinstitution of thy dearly beloved Son our Savior JesusChrist, we, thy humble servants, do celebrate and makehere before thy divine Majesty, with these thy holy gifts, which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Sonhath commanded us to make; having in remembrance hisblessed passion and precious death, his mightyresurrection and glorious ascension; rendering unto theemost hearty thanks for the innumerable benefitsprocured unto us by the same.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, tohear us; and, of thy almighty goodness, vouchsafe to blessand sanctify, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, these thy giftsand creatures of bread and wine; that we, receiving themaccording to thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ's holyinstitution, in remembrance of his death and passion, maybe partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness mercifullyto accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving;most humbly beseeching thee to grant that, by the meritsand death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in hisblood, we, and all thy whole Church, may obtainremission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion. And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, andliving sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee thatwe, and all others who shall be partakers of this HolyCommunion, may worthily receive the most precious Bodyand Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, be filled with thy graceand heavenly benediction, and made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him.And although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins,to offer unto thee any sacrifice, yet we beseech thee toaccept this our bounden duty and service, not weighingour merits, but pardoning our offenses, through JesusChrist our Lord;By whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, worldwithout end.
