387TH ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018FROM THE PRESIDENTIt is with great pleasure that I present theCamberwell Hockey Club Annual Report for 2018.During the year, there have been manyhighlights but none as important asthe opening of The Matlock Centre, our new clubhouse. This new facility isa “game changer” for our Club as wenow have the latest and best facilitiesfor players and supporters alike. Ourclubhouse has set a new standard incommunity sport and one we should allbe very proud of. We have a fantasticfacility that will be used by generationsof players and supporters.Like every community based notfor-profit organisation, we rely oneveryone to put in. And put in theydid. For 11 months of the year weoperated out of portables crammedtogether between the pitch andthe Matlock Street fence. Not oncedid we have a complaint about thesituation, but what we saw was asteely determination from everyoneto carry on business as usual as wewatched our new clubhouse rise. Inaddition, our members contributedover 205,000 and spent countlesshours working with council and thebuilders. There are so many at the Club whomake things happen. So many tasksare undertaken quietly and efficientlyto ensure the wheels keep turningso that players can play and thatsupporters can support. To all thecoaches, team managers, ball kids, committee members (the list isendless) I would like to say thank you– you are all truly amazing. While I am offering thanks, I would liketo acknowledge our great sponsors foronce again supporting us this seasonand we look forward to your continuedsupport for many years to come.Success can be measured in manyways. Like most clubs, one of oursuccess measures is our on-fieldperformance which again wasoutstanding. I am however glad toadd that we also measure success byour progress against our Vision - “Acommunity club for all ages, gendersand abilities”. As you will see in thisyear’s Annual Report, we are onceagain successful across this measure. After almost 5 years of having theprivilege of being President of ourgreat Club, it is time for me to hangup the Presidential boots and passthe baton to the next wave of leaders. We have very strong foundationsin place to ensure we continueto exceed as a club well into thefuture. A great club is made up ofgreat people and our Club is lucky tohave so many great people involved. There are far too many people forme to thank individually, so to allthat have supported me, advisedme, challenged me and thanked me,I wish you all the best and I lookforward to catching up with you on theside-lines as a spectator enjoying ourbrand of hockey.I hope you enjoy reading our AnnualReport and finding out more about ourClub, our committed members andour successes this year.Harry DrakosPresident

787TH ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017STRATEGIC PLAN 2017 - 2021The Club’s Strategic Plan is the roadmap for our activities. In 2017 a new Strategic Plan wasreleased and is readily available on our website. It is intended that each year we report via theAnnual Report on our activities to meet Our Strategic Pillars and Goals.1. PLAYER SUPPORT AND ENGAGEMENTGOAL: Provide the best environment for our players2018 Strategic Assessment: 4 out of 5During the year the Club continued to develop a rangeof pathways for players and supporters to reach theirpotential. This included transition programs for juniorsmoving to senior and additional training over summerfor juniors wanting to improve their skills. Many seniorplayers are also involved with coaching and mentoringjunior players and this aids in the transition and retentionfrom junior to senior ranks. It is intended that a “juniorcoaching manual” developed by key senior players beused in 2019 and beyond to provide a framework forjunior coaches. Our pathways are not just for “talented” players – theyare constructed for all players regardless of age, abilityand gender. In 2018, much of the emphasis was on thejunior program. In 2019, it is intended that some of thesenior and masters teams receive appropriate coachingand an opportunity to train and play at Matlock. The physical environment at Matlock was enhanced withthe additional items we included at our cost in the newclubhouse. It is hoped that all players will make use ofthe facility.2. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENTGOAL: Continued financial strength and independence2018 Strategic Assessment: 5 out of 5During the year considerable expenditure was outlaid ona range of facilities including our significant contributionin respect to the new clubhouse for additional space.Over 205,000 was donated by members in respect tothese activities through the Australian Sports Foundation. Our financial strength has not been diluted by theconsiderable expenditure.3. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTGOAL: Promote the value of the Camberwell Hockey Club to theBoroondara Community2018 Strategic Assessment: 4 out of 5The Club has enthusiastically embraced the concept ofThe Matlock Centre being a community centre for useby all in the Boroondara Community. The CanterburyNeighbourhood Centre (CNC) and the Club has enteredinto a Licence whereby the Centre has use of the firstfloor of The Matlock Centre on weekdays from 9.00amto 5.00pm. Along with Council we are looking for otheropportunities to enhance our Community Engagement. Our continued relationship with Council is built ontransparency and respect. The Club is slowly building a strong relationship with theCNC, who joined us at two Open Days in July and August. It is our intention to meet on a regular basis and to offerour members a variety of community based activities.4. HOCKEY ENGAGEMENTGOAL: Lead, promote and grow hockey in Victoria2018 Strategic Assessment: 4 out of 5The Club is the largest in Victoria so meeting this pillaris imperative not only for the club but also the widerhockey community. During the last 12 months the Clubhad over 148 children between the ages of 5 and 8 tryhockey through the Hook-n-2-Hockey program conductedat the Club. In addition we showcased hockey to over1,250 local school children. The Club is strongly involvedin a range of Hockey Victoria initiatives both throughindividual involvement or the backing of their programs.Hockey Victoria values the contribution that Camberwellmakes to our sport. Our Club’s management is heldin high esteem and on a regular basis, HV seeks ourfeedback on key issues and looks to the Club to supportHV’s vision for the future of hockey.5. OUR PEOPLEGOAL: Strengthen our culture across players, supporters andvolunteers2018 Strategic Assessment: 4 out of 5Ensuring the health and wellbeing of all involved at theClub is a continual process. The need to ensure thatall sections of the club receive equal opportunity is animperative for the Board.Planning has commenced to further increase femaleparticipation in the club at all levels and includesleadership, administration, coaching, umpiring as well asplaying. The Matlock Centre will also give us the opportunity toattract new players to the Club as well as re-engagingwith past players and families. We also have theopportunity to interact more closely with the widercommunity and in collaboration with the CNC we lookforward to this engagement.6. FACILITIES AND INFRASTRUCTUREGOAL: Provide the best possible training, playing and social facilities2018 Strategic Assessment: 5 out of 5The 2017/18 year saw feverish activity in this area withthe most obvious being the completion by Council of ournew clubhouse – The Matlock Centre. The Club took theopportunity to also upgrade all the fencing on the easternside of the ground, build a covered technical bench andinclude a range of additional facilities in the clubhouse. Our second ground at Koonung Secondary College will beresurfaced in the next four months and negotiations areunderway to upgrade the facilities.

He haswon 7 consecutive premierships asCaptain of Pennant A and won a flagin 11 of the last 13 as a player in theteam. There are few better examplesof a player working hard to get themost out of themselves. He is a truerole model to others in the team.Leading from the front, Burkie hashelped build a great team culture andpreached the importance of traininghard and has brought a level ofprofessionalism to the thirds hockey, unmatched by any other team in thecompetition.Burkie does so much for the teambehind the scenes but never seeksany recognition. He is the one thatorganises the pre-season matches,fills-in the team sheet, ensures thatthere are half-time snacks, writesthe match reports and perhaps mostimportantly, ensures that PA hassigned a marquee player for theyear (the likes of Tommy Allan, SamGanguly and Nick Rees).Burkie also ensures that PA/PB get thehighest quality coaching of any thirds. Not only does he run the trainingsessions, but he also seeks out thequality coaching from the likes of StuWebster, Ash Carey, Will Unkles, NickRees, Dan Miles, Jason Reilly and TavCook. He has also been a dedicatedcontributor to the junior program atthe club. He has coached many teamshimself and encouraged youngerplayers to train and play in the PA/PBsquad.Burkie allegedly once promised thathe would run as many marathons ashe does premierships. He has now run2, so still has many more runs to go.Lachie Hunterwho has been with Burkie in the “7Peat”
