This past year, the Cadets have undergone rigorous training in order to improve their leadershipskills, technical and professional expertise, and critical thinking. They have withstood and successfullycompleted a multitude of training events consisting of: land navigation, Platoon and Squad level SituationalTraining Exercises, Leadership Development Exercises, Leadership Labs and many more. Throughout theyear each Cadet was given a variety of different leadership roles, giving them vast opportunities in whichto develop their command ability, and give them hands on experience on what it means to lead a team.Our primary focus this past year was to prepare the cadets for their Cadet Summer Training requirement,which is held at Fort Knox, KY, between June and August.It has been a pleasure to work with and guide the Cadets of this program. He is a nativeof Sedro-Woolley, Washington.He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point andcommissioned in the U.S. ArmyCorps of Engineers. He earned aBachelors of Science in Environmental Engineering, a Master ofScience in Engineering Management from the Missouri University of Science and Technology,and a Master of Engineering inEnvironmental Engineering Sciences from the University of Florida. He is a registered ProfessionalEngineer in the state of Missouri.CPT Jose Hernandez is the Training Officer and Assistant Professor of Military Science. He is anative of Adjuntas, Puerto Rico.He graduated from the Metropolitan University in Puerto Rico andcommissioned in the U.S. ArmyAviation Corps. He served as avolleyball player for the All Armyvolleyball team in 2012, leadingthe team to a gold medal and anundefeated tournament. He wasthe number one selection for theU.S. All Armed Forces team. Hehas a Bachelors Degree in Management and a Masters in Finance.Mr. Joshua Nieratko is the RecruitMs. Patricia Dent has served asment Operations Officer. SECTION NAME3FA L L L E A D E R H S I P D E V E LO P M E N T E X E R C I S ECAMP SAN LUIS OBISPOEvery year the Surfriders train with neighboring colleges ontraining exercises in the field. This academic year from 20NOV201522NOV2015, Surfrider Battalion traveled to Camp San Luis Obispoto participate in a Leadership Development Exercise with Cal PolySan Luis Obispo. During this weekend, cadets were able to bondand learn about valuable skills within the Army. Cadets participatedin Field Leaders Reaction Courses (FLRCs), Day and Night LandNavigation, and First Aid and Key Leader Engagement LeadershipLanes.B u s i n e s s M a g a z i n e A p r i l 2 0 11

4SECTION NAMEV E T E R A N S D AYWEEKENDVeterans Day Parade – The Surfrider Battalion marched in the Veterans Day Parade down State Street,Santa Barbara on November 8, 2015. The cadets marched in formation through the parade while second,third, and fourth year cadets called cadences. On the same weekend, the Surfrider Battalion was invitedto the 20th Annual Military Ball hosted by the Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation. The theme of thisyear’s ball was the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War and featured keynote speaker, and recipient ofthe 1967 Medal of Honor, SGT Sammy L. Davis (U.S Army). Cadets and their dates were able to take part inthis military tradition and had the opportunity to meet and talk to Active military members and Veteransin all branches of the military.B u s i n e s s M a g a z i n e A p r i l 2 0 11

SECTION NAMETHEB ATA A NMEMORIALD E AT HMARCHAfter the April 9, 1942, U.S.surrender of the Bataan Peninsulaon the main Philippine island ofLuzon to the Japanese duringWorld War II (1939-45), theapproximately 75,000 Filipinoand American troops on Bataanwere forced to make an arduous65-mile march to prison camps.The marchers made the trek inintense heat and were subjectedto harsh treatment by Japaneseguards. Thousands perishedin what became known as theBataan Death March. In honorof this special group of WorldWar II heroes, cadets from theSurfrider Battalion, as well asthousands of other participantsacross the country, both militaryand civilian, participated in theannual Bataan Memorial DeathMarch marathon. This event takesplace in White Sands MissileRange in New Mexico, andconsists of a 26.2 marathon ona grueling course where militaryparticipants can either run light5(Full Army Combat Uniform) orheavy (Full Army Combat Uniformwith the addition of a 35 poundruck sack). This year, the UCSBSurfrider Battalion sent 14 cadetscomprising of one heavy team, onelight team, and a number of cadetsrunning the event individually.These cadets trained throughoutWinter Quarter, running everyTuesday, Thursday, and Saturdayalong with regularly scheduledPhysical Training on Monday,Wednesday and Friday. The hardwork paid off, as every cadetwas able to finish the marathon.Additionally, Cadet DominqueChan completed the marathonwith the fastest time in her agegroup finishing in 5 hours and10 minutes, while Cadet DeclanHarris finished with the heaviestweighing ruck at 68 lbs.Way to go Surfriders!B u s i n e s s M a g a z i n e A p r i l 2 0 11

6SECTION NAMEM E N TO R S H I PBROTHERHOOD AND SISTERHOODThe Surfrider Battalion continued to utilize mentorship groups in order to create a family-likeatmosphere within the ROTC program. Each MSIV is assigned three to four cadets from the MSIMSIII class at the beginning of the school year to provide guidance and support. Cadets are able tobuild personal relationships within each mentor group, while senior cadets are able to assist incomingfreshmen transition into college and ROTC life. This year, MSIV cadets also assisted their MSIII menteeswith their Talent Assessment packets, which are used during the accessions process. Aside fromprofessional development, mentor groups also took the opportunity to go out on adventurous tripsto form tight-knit bonds.B u s i n e s s M a g a z i n e A p r i l 2 0 11

SECTION NAME7PHYSICALTRAININGENDURANCE TRAININGTHROUGHOUT THE YEAR, THE SURFRIDER BATTALION CONTINUED ITS TRADITIONALLY EXCELLENTPERFORMANCE IN PHYSICAL TRAINING THAT RESULTED IN HIGH ARMY PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST SCORESIN EACH MILITARY SCIENCE CLASS. CADETS WENT THROUGH INTENSE PHYSICAL TRAINING EVERYMONDAY, WEDNESDAY, AND FRIDAY MORNINGS FROM 0630-0730. PHYSICAL TRAINING CONSISTS OFDISTANCE RUNNING, HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING, AB-BLASTERS WITH PLANK COMPETITIONS,COMBAT WATER SURVIVAL TRAINING, AND THE CADET-FAVORITE BEACH WORKOUTS.B u s i n e s s M a g a z i n e A p r i l 2 0 11

8SECTION NAMELEADERSHIP LABLEADERSHIP TRAININGThe Surfrider Battalion developed their tactical and technical skills during leadershiplabs that were held every Thursday. These labs consisted of a variety of soldier andleadership skills ranging from Drill and Ceremony, Land Navigation, Virtual BattlefieldSimulation (VBS) system familiarization, Squad level Tactical Exercises, and PatrolOperations. Third year cadets typically led tactical missions as a Squad Leader or PatrolLeader, while first and second year cadets gained a familiarization with these tasks.B u s i n e s s M a g a z i n e A p r i l 2 0 11

SECTION NAME9SPRING LEADERSHIPD E V E LO P M E N T E X E R C I S ECAMP ROBERTSThe Spring Quarter LeadershipDevelopment Exercise is an allencompassing training event thattook place from April 1-3, 2016. TheSurfrider Battalion coordinated withFresno State and Cal Poly San LuisObispo to conduct the weekendlong training at Camp Roberts, CA.Surfriders arrived in style, as contracted cadets boarded CH-47Chinooks to travel to Camp Roberts.The Assistant Professor of MilitaryScience, CPT Jose Hernandez, whois an Aviation officer, coordinated themovement. Upon arrival to the training site, cadets underwent intensetactical exercises that tested theability of MSIII cadets from all threeuniversities. All cadets experiencedsleeping out in the field in PatrolBases, and lived off of MREs and thecontents of their rucks. This year,cadets had the unique experienceof clearing buildings, taught by MSGArmstrong and Mr. Nieratko, whois a 20 year Military Police Veteran.B u s i n e s s M a g a z i n e A p r i l 2 0 11

10SECTION NAMER OTC 1 0 0 T H Y E A R A N N I V E R S A R YANNIVERSARY5K FUN RUN2016 marked the 100th year anniversaryof JROTC and ROTC. To celebrate thisevent, ROTC programs across the nationparticipated in 5k Fun Runs at each hostuniversity. Surfriders enjoyed the luxuryof running on the beach with friends andfellow alumni. The weather was perfectand the ending featured a photo finishbetween MSIV Cadet Nicholas Brischlerand MSII Cadet Andrew Ripley. SECTION NAME11A LU M N I R E C E P T I O NALUMNIUCSB ALUMNI WEEKENDAs part of this year’s AlumniReception, Surfriders, both presentand past, participated in the 9thannual UCSB All Gaucho Gallop andChallenge. Cadets helped to set upthe event, while a select few ran inthe All Gaucho Gallop. 2LT Julienne,2LT Paychev, and 2LT Yoon, whomall commissioned from our programin 2015, also made the trip to SantaBarbara to compete in the GauchoChallenge. Surfriders representedour program well by supportingthe event and winning the GauchoChallenge with the team consistingof MSIV Cadet Declan Harris and 2LTDayquan Julienne.Surfriders lead the way!B u s i n e s s M a g a z i n e A p r i l 2 0 11

12SECTION NAMEAWARDSCEREMONYAWARDSOn May 20, 2016, Surfrider Cadets and guests gathered at the Mosher Alumni House at UCSB torecognize individuals that have performed exceptionally well throughout the school year. Cadets werepresented awards for various achievements by special guests that includes representatives from thePierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation, the families of the late CPT Dion J. Burmaz and cpt. christopherwalter, and many more. The awardees have worked extremely hard for their accomplishments andrepresent what being a Surfrider is all about. This year, four MSIV Cadets, received Distinguished MilitaryGraduate honors, which means that they ranked in the top 20% of Army ROTC graduates nationwide.B u s i n e s s M a g a z i n e A p r i l 2 0 11

SECTION NAME13DINING OUTThis year’s Surfirder BattalionDining Out (Military Ball) tookplace on May 21, 2016 at theSanta Barbara Maritime Museum,which is located in the SantaBarbara Harbor. Our cadetrun military ball committeeplanned the event throughoutthe course of the school yearand did an excellent job hostinga fun-filled night. The nightfeatured a buffet for dinner,legendary skits performed byeach military science class, andthe infamous grog ceremonywhere senior cadets dranka concoction created byingredients from cadre and eachmilitary science class. Overall,the night was a huge successand was an extraordinary way tocelebrate the end of the year.B u s i n e s s M a g a z i n e A p r i l 2 0 11

14SECTION NAMEV I S I T F R O M A N A LU M N IALUMINIOn May 26, 2016, First Lieutenant Eric Chu, a 2013 graduate from the UCSB ROTCprogram, came to UCSB to talk to MSIVs about his experiences as a lieutenant. 1LT Chubriefed the senior cadets what he would typically teach new lieutenants that arrive atJoint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, Washington. 1LT Chu has been doing greatthings in the Army and will take the position of General’s Aide in the upcoming year.The soon-to-be commissioning Surfriders were fortunate to learn from a successfulSurfrider Alum.B u s i n e s s M a g a z i n e A p r i l 2 0 11
