MODEL U.N. EXCELS!Congratulations to the Model U.N. team for their success at the UCBerkley and CSU Long Beach Model U.N. competitions! At the first competition of the season held on March 1st – 4th,hosted by UC Berkley, our team competed against mostly fouryear institutions. COCMUN members Sara Cole and Joel Szakmeisterreceived “ Verbal Commendation” awards.At the LBMUN competition, held March 9th – 11th we competedagainst both four-year and two-year institutions. Of the 14 COCMUN delegates, 8 won awards! Of the 6 new COCMUN delegates, 4 won awards! COC was named “Best Delegation” for the second yearin a row! MONTEREY NEXT GENERATION JAZZ FESTIVALCongratulations to Julie Lawson and the “Just Jazz”vocal group for placing 3rd in the Monterey NextGeneration Jazz Festival 2018 this past weekend. This is the 8th time that “Just Jazz” has been invitedto perform at this festival and the 3rd time that “HouseBlend” has been invited. After opening for Imani Gonzalez in the PAC on Fridaynight, the group left COC at 6:30 am on Saturdaymorning for Monterey. Both groups performed in front of an audience onSaturday afternoon, but without judges. The actualcompetition, with judging, took place on Sundayafternoon. Congratulations also to COC student Max Smith whowon the outstanding soloist award for his amazingscat solo on “Fascinating Rhythm”.03/14/18BOT Chancellor’s Report11

TECHNOLOGY AWARDSCOC is pleased to be accepting two Chancellor’s OfficeTechnology Awards on Monday, March 19th. The Chancellor’s Office Technology Focus Awardrecognizes a college that has identified and solvedsignificant problems to the benefit of students, staffand/or faculty. COC will be receiving this award forour Amazon Project that streamlined and improvedthe registration process and financial aid applicationprocess for our students. Jim Temple will be receiving the Chancellor’s OfficeTechnology Leadership Award which recognizesindividuals who have demonstrated extraordinaryeffectiveness, influence, diplomacy and careerachievement within the field of higher educationaltechnology management. FORREST GOES TO WASHINGTONJeffrey Forrest, VP of Economic and WorkforceDevelopment, will be testifying in Washington, DC onTuesday, March 20th at a hearing on small businessparticipation in apprenticeship programs. Jeffrey will be providing testimony before the U.S.House of Representatives Committee on SmallBusiness. AMS APPRENTICESHIPS FEATURED IN NATIONAL MAGAZINEThe COC apprenticeship program with AMSFulfillment was recently featured in the annualpublication produced by the Council for Adult andExperiential Learning (CAEL) and written by JeffreyForrest. The article focuses on the collaborativeapproach of the apprenticeship, how it does notrequire membership in a union to participate andhow it specifically seeks to assist veterans,dislocated workers and underservedcommunities. COC STUDENT HONORED BY SIGMA KAPPA DELTAThe national office of Sigma Kappa Deltainformed English professor and SKD advisorRuth Rassool that COC student Sabrina Arriswon every scholarship and award for whichshe applied. Sabrina is an English major with a focus oncreative writing. She worked on the literarymagazine Cul-De-Sac last year and worksas a tutor in the TLC. NURSING PROGRAM ACCREDITATIONCOC is honored to be recognized by the NationalLeague for Nursing for accreditation of our AssociateDegree Nursing Program. COC is the first program in the State of Californiato receive this accreditation. Accreditation is for the maximum term of 6 years(through 2/29/2024). PARALEGAL STUDIES PROGRAM COMPLIANTThe American Bar Association (ABA) site teamconcluded their visit this week and found ourParalegal Studies Program to be compliant and willrecommend to the ABA that the approval of ourprogram continue. The team had a few recommendations that willhelp us to continue to strengthen our program. DIGITAL MARKETING LIKE A BOSS!Corey Quinn, Chief Marketing Officer for ScorpionInternet Marketing, spoke to a packed house atthe Chancellor’s Circle Breakfast Briefing onFriday, February 23rd. SPACE AND INNOVATION EXPOThe COC Makerspace hosted the iLead/SCVi “Space &Innovation Expo” on March 2nd. Over 400 students, parents and guests attended theevent which featured a keynote speaker and hands-onactivities provided by the Makerspace staff. The keynote speaker was Dr. Jacob Cohen, NASAAmes Chief Scientist. iLead/SCVi students showcased their “Space &Innovation” themed science fair projects.03/14/18BOT Chancellor’s Report21

MATH FACULTY CONTINUE TO LEAD THE WAYThe California Acceleration Project (CAP) held their 2nd annualconference “Acceleration Across California” March 8th – 10th. The event hosted 470 faculty and administrators eager tolearn about best practices related to placement reform andimplementation of AB705. Representative Jacqui Irwin welcomed the group to the threeday conference. Sab Matsumoto, Preeta Saxena and Joe Gerda presentedon both our placement process (the model for AB705) andrecent data that will affect Guided Pathways. Joe Gerda also served as a panelist on a PPIC presentationof Statistics Pathways. Kathy Kubo was one of the co-organizers of the event. SCV ECONOMIC OUTLOOK CONFERENCECOC was proud to partner with the SCV EDC to present the 2018Economic Outlook Conference on Thursday, March 9th at TPC in theirnew tent. Speakers included: President & CEO Holly Schroeder of SCV EDC; County Supervisor Kathryn Barger; Dr. Mark Schneipp of California Economic Forecast; Dr. Mark Vitner, Managing Director & Senior Economist at WellsFargo; and Executive Producer of NCIS Mr. Mark Williams. I was pleased to speak about the positive economic impact thatCOC is making on our local economy and our successes in trainingthe workforce and preparing our students for the jobs of tomorrow. EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION OER SUMMITEarly Childhood Education and Distance Learningpartnered to organize the ECE OER Summit on Friday,March 9th at College of the Canyons. 56 participants from 33 community college and 1 CSUattended, including 30 virtual participants. Participants learned about OER best practices,collaborated in small groups and developed contentoutlines for 8 ECE open textbooks. The event provided a platform for continued virtualcollaboration. PATRONS OF THE ARTS MEMBERS EVENT – STEINWAY & SONS SCHOOLOur Patrons of the Arts enjoyed an exclusivemember-only cabaret event on Friday, March 9th. Members enjoyed a evening of fun as they saton the PAC stage to celebrate COC as anofficial Steinway & Sons School. GIG PILOT EVENT & PARTNERSHIP WITH SAMASCHOOLIn response to the growth of the “GIG Economy”, COChas partnered with Samaschool, a leader in preparingstudents for the freelance economy. Students from our GIG Cohort will have access tocourses offered through a special partnership withSamaschool where they will learn how to marketthemselves, negotiate deals and earn money asfreelancers. Samaschool is a San Francisco-based nonprofitfocused on preparing low-income populations tosucceed as independent workers. Our GIG pilot event was held yesterday, March 13th. Students discussed their goals to createopportunities for additional income and gain workexperience. 24 community colleges across the state areparticipating in the GIG Pilot, with COC servingas the lead institution. TLC CUSTOMER SERVICE TRAININGOn February 23rd the TLC held “CustomerService Training” designed for our studentemployment groups to strengthen customerservice skills, boost interpersonal effectivenessand invigorate overall team spirit. 116 College Assistants and Short TermEmployees representing a variety ofdepartments, programs, labs and offices oncampus attended the training. Paul Butler from Newleaf Training andDevelopment provided the 90 minuteinteractive training. LARRY HURST ARTIST TALK – HE’S BACK!Patrons of the Arts were treated to anenlightening artist talk by our own Larry Hurstat his exhibition in the COC Art Gallery onSaturday, February 24th. The exhibition features a selection of his ownworks of art spanning some 40 years. This show brings together works from hisprecise and elegant geometric abstractpaintings; his nuanced and poetic collage;and his intensively hand-crafted sculptures. THE CHIEFTAINS – 56TH ANNIVERSARY TOURThe iconic Irish band “The Chieftains”performed to an enthusiastic crowdat the Performing Arts Center onSaturday, February 24th. GERIATRIC NURSING FACULTY DEVELOPMENT GRANTWe were proud to submit our final evaluation report which summarizedthe progression of the Archstone Foundation - Geriatric NursingFaculty Development Initiative at COC. This initiative, which began in the summer of 2014 and ran thoughDecember 2017, was to increase the ability of our nursing faculty toteach geriatric nursing. It was a team approach to implementation and outcomes thatprovided: Professional development for faculty; Attendance at the National League of Nursing conference; Software for virtual clinical scenarios; Equipment and supplies to increase student learning outcomes;and Support for the Family Caregiving Workshops hosted by theSchool of Social and Behavioral Sciences.03/14/18BOT Chancellor’s Report34

GERIATRIC NURSING FACULTY DEVELOPMENT ONGOINGAlthough this grant project is complete and the objectives havebeen met, the Family Caregivers Advisory Committee willcontinue to pursue ways to fund the work of this project by: Exploring funding options; Utilizing COCs Community Education (fee-based) programsto offer workshops; Pursuing the development of non-credit courses for olderadults; Providing ongoing professional development opportunitiesfor nursing faculty through The Health Workforce Initiative;and Continuing to provide community based family caregiverworkshops with subject matter express in partnership withthe SCV Senior Center. IT’S STAR PARTY TIME AGAIN!We have a stellar lineup for the Star Party onFriday, April 27th at the Canyon Country Campus. “Detwinkling the Stars to StudyExoplanetary Systems” will be the topic ofguest speaker Dr. Vanessa Bailey, StaffScientist at JPL. Interactive demonstration and activity tables willbe provided by our students, faculty and staff. High-powered telescopes for night sky viewingwill be provided by local astronomy clubs.
