CALIFORNIA WATER ENVIRONMENT ASSOCIATIONNORTHERN SACRAMENTO VALLEY SECTIONTraining Day Report September 19,2017 Yuba CityThe first presentation, “Utilizing NaturalBiological Process to Enhance In-Situ SludgeDigestion”, was by Grace Corbino, President ofBlue Frog Technology. http://www.bluefrogsystem.com/ Blue Frog produces aproduct that basically turns sludge lagoons intodigesters, reducing the expense of dredging sludge. They have had several successful installations oftheir product in wastewater treatment plantsthroughout California, Texas, and North Carolina. Blue Frog units operate as a continuouslyselective tank reactor (CSTR), selecting for the correct bacteria to “bio-dredge” lagoons. If yourwastewater treatment plant is facing a high cost dredging project, the Blue Frog system may beable to save money, save electricity, and eliminate odors.Alex Ambrosialex@aquadyneassociates.com9

Training Day Report (continued)The second presentation, “Utilizing RemoteMonitoring in Wastewater Collection Systems”, wasby Brogan Quist, Regional Sales Manager for SmartCover Systems. The Smart Cover systems have anultrasonic flow level indicator with a 2 year battery pack thatconnects to the under-side of a manhole lid and sends flowdata by satellite to a website. These systems have been usedto track sewer systems with high inflow and infiltration, tofind sewer lines that are beginning to experience a stoppageand prevent a Sanitary Sewer Overflow, and to monitor theactual flow in a sewer line to reduce the need for upsizingsewers unnecessarily. The monitors are one more tool to helpsewer collection system staff understand their system. These systems are especially useful tomonitor remote manholes where access can be difficult. The third presentation was by Kevin Peters, SalesEngineer with R.F. MacDonald Co. titled, “i-Alert 2,Simple and Easy Equipment Health Monitoring”.The i-Alert-2 monitor attaches to a piece ofwastewater treatment equipment like a pump andmonitors the temperature and vibration of theequipment. The device sends information viaBluetooth connection to your smart phone when youare within 100 feet from your little blue monitor box.The Bluetooth signals save time andenergy because you don’t have to get tooclose to moving and rotating parts of themachines, but can quickly detectmisalignment and bearing problems withyour equipment BEFORE IT BREAKSDOWN!10

Training Day Report (continued)The final presentation of themorning was by AkramBotrous, PhD from StantechCorporation titled, “AerationSystems for Activated Sludge”. Mr.Botrous described aeration systems at awastewater treatment plant as the mostenergy consuming process that weencounter, using approximately 50% ofthe total energy use in the plant. Ifwastewater staff can learn to optimizethe aeration system, we can save power, which equals saving money. He describedthe “OTR”, Oxygen Transfer Rate” of a wastewater plant. He also went on todescribe the increases in efficiency that can be achieved with a closer (denser)diffuser configuration and with smaller bubbles. Finally, I’d like to give a bigThank You to a legend in theworld of wastewatertreatment. Dr. DavidJenkins, PhD from U. C.Berkeley and his lovely wifehappened to unexpectedly join us today for training and lunch.
