The events of Wednesday, January 6th in our nation’s capital were shocking. Who could ever imagine such violence erupting in the very center of our democracy? As I sat and watched multiplenews reports, I asked, “Is this really happening? Is this what we have become?” Sadly, our nation is divided now more than any other time since the Civil War. As Archbishop William Lori, the archbishop of Baltimore, wrote in a letter to his parishioners: Political divisions are nothingnew. Bitter partisan debate is nothing new. Political passion is nothing new. But a direct physical attack on members of Congress is unprecedented and must never happen again. People diedand were wounded in the attack. So too was our democracy wounded. We must not allow it todie. Two weeks later, this Wednesday, January 20, we will once again witness the transfer of power, anintegral part of our democratic form of government. I invite you to join me in praying for all ofour elected officials and for our nation that this time-honored tradition will be peaceful. May welearn from these events and recommit ourselves to a respectful, honest, and dignified working together for the good of all. Please join me in these days leading up to the inauguration in praying for our nation and our elected leaders. May God’s Spirit guide us all!God of justice and truth,we ask your blessing on our nation.Thank you for the freedoms we enjoy, especially those we take for granted. We praise you for the rich diversity of our people.Enlarge our capacity for tolerance, understanding, and mutual respect.Guide those elected to lead and govern our citizens.May your Spirit of wisdom, knowledge, and understandinginspire, embolden, and encourage them. With your strength, may we all work to overcome differences, eliminate prejudice, and build a nation of justice and peace. With all faith, hope and trust in you, Creator God,we pray through Christ, our Lord. Amen!

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEGod’s CallOne of the fondest shared memories of childhood has to be the call to come home for supper. At the time, we may not havewanted to set aside our games, but now we recall the sweet long evening and the memory of being called to the originalplace of nurturing and community. However it came to us, we heeded: the six o’clock whistle blew or the Angelus bell rangor we heard the familiar voices of our parents calling down the alley, “Suppertime!” The call to each child is the call to allthe children, each in his or her own family. No single one could pull up a chair to the table until all of the family was there.God’s call is like that. Each and every one is called to a place of nurturing and community. God’s call is directed to each ofus and each of us must respond. Each of us is called, but none of us is called alone.Fਉ ਓਔ Rਅਁ ਉ ਇ: 1 Samuel 3:3b–10, 19 Rਅਓਐਏ ਓਏ ਉਁ Pਓਁ : Psalm 40:2, 4, 7–8, 8–9, 10Sਅਃਏ Rਅਁ ਉ ਇ: 1 Corinthians 6:13c–15a, 17–20 Gਏਓਐਅ : John 1:35–42CommentGod summoned the leaders of Israel in startling ways. Moses’ mission, for example, was delivered from a burning bush;Isaiah’s vocation was disclosed in a fiery vision in the temple. In today’s first reading, we hear of a quiet invitation, onemore within our experience. In the first two chapters of the first book of Samuel, which precede this reading, we learn thatSamuel’s mother, Hannah, had stormed heaven for a child. God answered her prayers and in due time she bore a son, Samuel. What Hannah could not have known was that Samuel’s birth, so special to Hannah, was also a gift to Israel.Samuel, now a boy, is growing up in the precincts of the temple in Shiloh, where the ark of the covenant is enshrined. Onenight he hears a voice calling. Three times he arises to see if his mentor, Eli, has called, and three times he is sent back tobed. Just before today’s passage, it is noted that Samuel is new to this business of conversing with God, for at that time“revelation of the Lord was uncommon and vision infrequent” (1 Samuel 3:1). But, finally, Samuel understands that he isbeing called by God. He obeys and becomes, as it turns out, the first prophet during the time of the monarchy. Samuel’swilling and attentive spirit sets the tone for today’s meditation on those who heed God’s call. The Gospel follows and flows from the story of baptism of Jesus, which the Church heard proclaimed last Sunday. ThoughJohn does not record the baptism of Jesus, he refers to it here. Jesus is called the Lamb of God. The term “lamb” is the kindof wordplay that we often find in John’s writing. The Aramaic word talya can mean both “lamb” and “servant.” John theBaptizer pointed out Jesus, and described him as the servant of God. This was all the disciples needed as they ran to catchup to Jesus, who was passing by. They moved so quickly, almost impulsively, that when they caught up with Jesus and heasked them what they were searching for, they seemed to fumble their lines. They asked him, somewhat lamely, where hewas staying. It was as if Jesus knew they were searching for a place or a way or a dwelling that Jesus had found or knewabout. To the disciples’ question, Jesus replied, “Come and see.” Jesus’ words implied, “Come and dwell where I do; comeand know what or who I know.” And they did. The disciples heard the call and followed.Jesus’ call was too good to keep bottled up. Andrew rushed off to tell his brother Simon, and confessed that he found theMessiah. Simon, too, came running, and his response to the call brought him a new name, “Peter,” the rock. Peter wouldbecome the foundation of God’s new people, the Church. In the second reading Paul speaks of the glory found in all who respond to God’s call. As followers of Christ, we are likeChrist in body and spirit. We who were called one by one are now part of a greater whole. We are no longer our own; wehave thrown our lot in with others. We are all one in Christ.ReflectionTo accept God’s call means more than accepting a personal or private commission. It means accepting a communal life, alife of solidarity with others. We can always test whether we are really responding to that call by asking ourselves, “WhenGod calls me, does God find a people, that is, a person committed to solidarity?” The person who is one in Christ is notmarked by parochial concerns and demands for self-fulfillment. It does not follow that taking care of oneself first leads tocaring for others. We are called to something greater than ourselves, and in obeying that call we are summoned beyond ourselves, to be servants like Jesus Christ.
