I. EligibilityThe Individual Student Alternative Education Plan (ISAEP) Program prepares students at risk ofdropping out of public high school to take the GED test while developing career and technicaleducation skills. The ISAEP program fulfills compulsory attendance requirements for students whoare between the age of 16 and 18 years of age. A student is eligible if:1. The student is currently enrolled in a Roanoke County public high school2. The student is at least 16 years of age3. The student is at risk of dropping out of school4. The student is not able to earn the required number of credits to graduate5. An initial principal -student-parent (PPS) meeting has been held6. The student meets academic entrance requirements; and chooses to prepare for the GEDtests.In order to be deemed eligible the student must have a 7.5 grade equivalent or higher on arecognized standard measure of reading achievement and a score of 145 on each of the 4 GEDsubtests. Roanoke County Public Schools uses the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) tomeasure reading achievement and the GED READY Official Practice Tests for the core areasubtest assessments.The purpose of the initial Principal-Parent-Student (PPS) meeting is to help parents and studentsunderstand the following options for satisfying Virginia's compulsory attendance requirement.1. Remain in a regular school program2. Enroll in an alternative education program3. Complete an ISAEP programAt this initial meeting, parents will sign a consent form that confirms they have receivedcomplete disclosure on the ISAEP Program and understand all requirements for each of theoptions for completing public school.Once all the above requirements are met, the development of the ISAEP is undertaken in aparent/student entrance meeting at The Burton Center for Arts and Technology. Parents will becontacted to schedule the entrance meeting and students must continue to attend their baseschool until this meeting has been held and the student begins attending the ISAEP Program atThe Burton Center for Arts and Technology.The ISAEP Program classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:45-6:30 in Building B,Room 310.

III.About the ProgramIII. ABOUT THE PROGRAMI.Meeting TimeISAEP GED meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 3:45-6:30. Students willcontinue to attend base schools until their first day of the ISAEP GED program. Once astudent has been approved, an entrance meeting has been held, and the student hasstarted in the program they are no longer required to attend their base school. TheISAEP GED program follows the Roanoke County Schools calendar and inclementweather schedule for closings. Please refer to local media to find out if Roanoke CountySchools are closed. In the event of a weather related two-hour delay ISAEP GED will beheld at the regular time.II.HomeworkISAEP GED Students are required to spend a total of 15 hours each week workingtoward the completion of the ISAEP GED coursework. 5 hours each week (2.5 onTuesday and 2.5 on Thursday) are spent in class. The remaining 10 hours are satisfiedthrough the completion of homework in the GED Book and other assigned activities. Abreakdown of how homework hours should be approached is included in this guide.III.1.Homework is checked every Tuesday and Thursday2.Students are expected to complete 7-10 hrs. worth of homework weekly.3.4.Homework not completed could result in unexcused absencesHomework will be checked by Ms. Robinson (please let her know if you have worked ahead).Work HoursISAEP Students are required to complete 150 hours of work (37.5 per test) in aworkplace or as a volunteer. Students may take 1 GED test for every 37.5 hours theyaccrue. Students can provide proof of these hours through pay stubs or Verification ofHours form included in this binder.IV.AttendanceFaithful attendance is vital to the success of ISAEP GED students and attending classregularly ensures that they are caught up with all requirements of the program. Allabsences must be verified by an official note from a doctor, court, or be otherwiseapproved by the ISAEP Coordinator to be counted as excused. Please refer to theISAEP Attendance Policy in Effect found in this binder.

III.About the ProgramV.Econ. and Personal Finance/ Workplace ReadinessISAEP/ GED Students must earn a credit for both Economics and Personal Finance. Thisis an online course structure and students may carry-over work completed in their baseschools toward these credits. Additionally, ISAEP GED students must take and pass theWorkplace Readiness Credential with a score of 75 or better.VI.GED TestingUpon the completion of 1.) At least 37.5 work hours per test2.) All the homework for at least 1 subject3.) A score of 145 or higher on the GED- Ready test5.) Regular attendanceAn ISAEP GED students may sit for 1 of the 4 GED tests. Test are given locally at theRoanoke Higher Education Center. Students are required to arrive at the testing center15 minutes early with an ID. Testing is free of charge to students. In the event that astudent does not attend the session or does not have documentation required by thetesting center the student is responsible for the cost of the re-test.VII.How To Be Successful In This Program1. PurposeTo outline provisions for encouraging and maintaining regular school attendance and documentingabsences.B. Excused Absences and Tardies1. Parents of students who are absent or tardy must inform the school in writing of the reason forthe absence or tardy no later than upon the student’s return to school. School staff records thestudent’s absence or tardy for each day as “excused” or “unexcused”.2. Absences and tardies are excused for the following reasons with written explanation from theparent:a. illness of the studentb. approval from administration prior to the absencec. death in family/funeral andd. school-sponsored activitiese. observance of a nationally recognized religious holiday if such holiday is verified and theschool is notified in advance.If absences and tardies that are excused solely by parent explanation become excessive, the schoolwill require additional documentation in order to ensure compliance with the compulsory schoolattendance law.3. Absences and tardies are excused for the following reasons with appropriate writtendocumentation:a. hospitalization or extended illness (with documentation from physician)b. doctor or dental appointment (with documentation from physician’s or dentist’s office)c. mandatory court appearance (with court documentation)4. A student whose absence is excused due to the observance of a nationally recognized religiousholiday is not deprived of any award or of eligibility or opportunity to compete for any award, orof the right to take an alternate test or examination, which the student missed by reason of suchabsence.5. Absences and tardies that do not meet the criteria for being excused absences or tardies areconsidered unexcused absences or tardies. Students in grades 9-12 may be denied full credit forassignments missed due to an unexcused absence or tardy.6. Nothing in this policy shall be construed to limit in any way the authority of any attendanceofficer or the division superintendent to seek immediate compliance with the compulsory schoolattendance law.C. Compliance with the Compulsory Attendance Law1. Students shall attend school for a full day unless otherwise excused by the principal andsuperintendent’s designee.2. Whenever a student fails to report to school on a regularly scheduled school day and no

Attendance Policyinformation has been received by school personnel that the student’s parent is aware of andsupports the absence, the school principal, principal’s designee, attendance officer or otherschool personnel or volunteer notifies the parent by phone, email or other electronic means toobtain an explanation.3. Excessive Absences Without Parental Awareness and Supporta. Upon Fifth Absence Without Parental Awareness and Support:If (1) a student fails to report to school for a total of five scheduled school days for the schoolyear, and (2) there is no indication that the student’s parent is aware of and supports theabsence; and (3) reasonable effort to notify the parent of the absences have failed, then theprincipal of his designee or the attendance officer shall make a reasonable effort to ensure thatdirect contact is made with the parent, either in person, through telephone conversation or e-mail,to obtain an explanation for the student’s absence and to explain to the parent the consequences ofcontinued nonattendance. The school principal or his designee orthe attendance officer, the student, and the student’s parent shall jointly develop a plan toresolve the student’s nonattendance. Such plan shall include documentation of the reasons forthe student’s nonattendance.b. Upon Sixth Absence Without Parental Awareness and Support:If the student is absent an additional day after direct contact with the student’s parent and theattendance officer has received no indication that the student’s parent is aware of and supportsthe student’s absence, either the school principal or his or her designee, or the attendanceofficer shall schedule a conference within ten school days, which must take place no later than thefifteenth school day after the sixth absence. At the conference, the student, his parent, andschool personnel, shall meet to resolve issues related to the student’s nonattendance. Othercommunity service providers may also be included in the conference.c. Upon Additional Absence Without Parental Awareness and Support:Upon the next absence after the conference without indication to the attendance office that thestudent’s parent is aware of and supports the student’s absence, the principal or designee shallnotify the attendance officer or superintendent or his or her designee who shall enforce thecompulsory attendance rules by either or both of the following: (1) Filing a complaint with thejuvenile and domestic relations court alleging the student is a child in need of supervision asdefined in §16.1-228 or (2) instituting proceedings against the parent pursuant to § 18.2-371 or§ 22.1-262. In filing a complaint against the student, the attendance officer shall provide writtendocumentation of the efforts already undertaken to resolve the student’s absence.
