Their passion and dedication forart has led them to share their collection of the “CaliforniaScene” painting movement of the 1920s through the 1970sand beyond with our community and all who have a deepappreciation of California Art.The Hilbert collection is comprised of oils, watercolors,sketches, and lithographs of rural and urban scenes, coastalviews, farms, ranches, freeways and landscapes of everydaylife in the Golden State.The Museum opened to the public in February, 2016 and isnow open Tuesday – Sunday, excluding holidays, from 11amto 5pm.Admission is free.INTERPLAYWelcome to today’s program, part of this year’s INTERPLAYFestival of music, culture and ideas, a collaborative venture ofChapman University and Pacific Symphony. With many eventsfree and open to the public, the festival offers audiences afascinating in-depth look at a particular facet of our culturethat will entertain, enlighten, illuminate and inspire.We look forward to seeing you on the Chapman campusand at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.

ABOU T T H E ART I STSJoseph Morris is the Principal Clarinet of the PacificSymphony where he holds the Hanson Family Foundation Chair.As the first prize winner of the 42nd Ima Hogg Competition he isthe recipient of the 2017 Grace Woodson Memorial Award andhas appeared as soloist with the Houston Symphony Orchestra,the Madison Symphony Orchestra, Burbank Philharmonic, andDowney Symphony Orchestra as well as a performance of JohnAdams’ Gnarly Buttons conducted by the composer with theColburn Orchestra. Mr. Morris has appeared as Guest PrincipalClarinet with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Grant ParkMusic Festival and at the Colorado Music Festival. He haspreviously held Principal Clarinet positions with the SarasotaOpera Orchestra and the Madison Symphony Orchestra. Mr.Morris received a Professional Studies Certificate from TheColburn Conservatory of Music in 2014. He graduated from theUSC Thornton School of Music in May 2012.Benjamin Smolen was appointed principal flutist of PacificSymphony in September 2011, where he occupies the Valerieand Hans Imhof Chair. He has won top prizes at the HaynesInternational Flute Competition, James Pappoutsakis MemorialFlute Competition, National Flute Association Young ArtistCompetition and New York Flute Club Young Artist Competition.He has given solo performances in Russia, Japan, Belgium,France and as concerto soloist with Pacific Symphony, PrincetonUniversity Orchestra, Charlotte Civic and Youth Orchestras, andGardner Webb Symphony Orchestra. Smolen’s performanceshave been featured on NPR, WGBH-Boston, WDAV-Charlotte,French National Radio, and the Naxos and Mode record labels.He can also be heard on the numerous soundtracks for moviesincluding Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Smolen studiedat Princeton University, the Moscow Conservatory, the NewEngland Conservatory and the University of Michigan. He is aWilliam S. Haynes Artist and performs on a handmade, customcrafted Haynes 14-karat gold flute.

ABOU T T H E ART I STSA native of southern California, Ted Sugata is currentlysecond oboist with Pacific Symphony and Professor atChapman University. Previously, he was a member of theSarasota Orchestra in Florida, and principal oboist with theLyrique-en-Mer Opera Festival in Belle-Ile, France. He performsregularly with the Los Angeles Opera, San Diego Symphony,Long Beach Symphony, Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra,and the Pasadena Symphony. Since 2012, he has been amember of the Calico Winds, a resident woodwind ensemblewith the Glendale Noon Concerts. In 2000, he received hisBachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Musicand his Master of Music degree from the Cleveland Instituteof Music in 2002. Dr. Sugata recently completed a Doctorateof Musical Arts degree in oboe performance at USC in 2014.In addition to Chapman, he is also on faculty at PepperdineUniversity, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona,Long Beach College and the Colburn School of Performing Arts.Rose Corrigan is principal bassoonist of Pacific Symphony,the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the Pasadena Symphony,and a former member of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestraand the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra. Corrigan is a graduateof the University of Southern California. She returned to theuniversity as an adjunct professor, teaching bassoon from 1993until 2011. Corrigan has played bassoon and contrabassoonon the soundtracks of over 500 motion pictures, working withcomposers such as Michael Giacchino, Patrick Doyle, HansZimmer, Danny Elfman, John Powell, Jerry Goldsmith, JohnWilliams, James Horner, Michel Legrand, Michael Kamen andWilliam Ross. She has also performed on hundreds of recordsfor stars like Paul McCartney, Tony Williams, Barbra Streisandand Natalie Cole. Rose lives in Sierra Madre with hertrombonist-composer husband Steven Williams and their threechildren.
