Focus on AlumniI Found a Community ofShared Learning as aTutor at UCC’s AcademicLearning CenterBy Liza Singer ‘08When I was first offered a job as a tutor, I didn’t know if Iwould have the time for it, but having had experience tutoringand teaching classes informally, I felt I could handle it. However,my perceptions did not prepare me for what the ALC had instore for me. In the end, the ALC felt less like a job to simplyscribble down on a resume and instead became a community ofshared learning. For a socially reserved person,an early challenge for me wasmaking the environment comfortable for tutees. Gail Hein, theALC Director, explained the importance of making the tutoringcenter a warm and inviting experience.Gradually I began to findways to open both the tutee and myself to the experience, andto make it a pleasing one.Slowly those who would visit my table on a regular basisformed bonds with one another. I became so emotionally invested in these people that the reward of their efforts and achievements offset the modest monetary rewards. I still rememberhow on overwhelming days where I’d have two tables of students all needing my help, a tutee who was either in the sameclass or a higher-level class would help another while my attention was occupied elsewhere. I also formed social bonds withthe other tutors, where we’d work as a team to help each othertutor effectively.Of course, tutoring at the ALC was not always an easy task.Sometimes a student and I would not be on the same page andan explanation wouldn’t click. We would then search for newand different techniques to overcome the hurdle. Many times Ifound myself surrounded by a growing number of studentswhere I’d only be able to help with one problem at time forhours on end. Still, in the end, to see the academic growth madeall the effort worth it.However, it needs to be understood that as a tutor it wasnever my job to “make someone smarter”. Most of the time Ifound it was simply giving the time to students that felt neglected, and helping them to realize their own abilities. I came acrossbrilliant writers who were not given the SAT grammar drillingexercises and mathematicians who only needed the confidenceto be assured that their answers were right. Many times I was learning along with them. Focusing onspecific grammatical points and/or math problems I hadn’t seenfor a while helped strengthen my own academic work. Whenthere was a comprehension disconnect it drove me to find newways to explore certain problems that originally hadn’t crossedmy mind. What is great about the ALC is it gives students who trulyhave the desire to succeed a chance.Whether it is because students can’t connect with the professor’s learning style, or arerequired to know something they don’t have the backgroundfor, or they haven’t been in school for a while, or maybe theyjust need the extra time, these disconnects are able to beresolved thanks to the ALC.Some students put so much attention and passion into theiracademic success that I was at many times humbled by theirwork ethic. It made me realize that the people who will truly succeed in life are not those who easily slide through all the roadsof life, but those who have relentless motivation and don’t takesuccess for granted.Sometimes they just need an extra boost. The Academic Learning Centers (ALC) on the Cranford, Elizabeth andPlainfield Campuses offer tutors in almost all credit courses taught at UCC,with special emphasis on high-risk courses. Liza Singer of Short Hills, NJ wasa peer tutor at the Academic Learning Center in Cranford. She is now astudent at the Gallatin School at NYU.SCHOLARS AT SCHOLARSHIPRECEPTIONAll smiles at the annual Scholarship Reception in April areCollege dignitaries, three Eleanor B.
