SCJA KEYNOTE 2016:Dr. Peter K. Manning“Goffman in Modernity: Smart Personal Devices andInterpersonal Obligation”Peter K. Manning (Ph.D. Duke, 1966, MA Oxon.1982) holds the Elmer V. H. and Eileen M. Brooks Chairin the College of Criminal Justice at Northeastern University, Boston, MA. He has taught at Michigan State,MIT, Oxford, the University at Albany and the University of Michigan, and was a Fellow of the NationalInstitute of Justice, Balliol and Wolfson Colleges, Oxford, the American Bar Foundation, the Rockefeller Villa(Bellagio), and the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, Wolfson College, Oxford. Listed in Who’s Who in America,and Who’s Who in the World, he has been awarded many contracts and grants, the Bruce W. Smith and theO.W. Wilson Awards from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, and the Charles Horton Cooley Awardfrom the Michigan Sociological Association. The author and editor of some 19 books, his research interestsinclude democratic policing, uses of information technology, and qualitative methods. His most recent booksare Policing Contingencies (2003 University of Chicago Press) and The Technology of Policing: (2008 NYUPress) and Democratic Policing in a Changing world (Paradigm Press, 2010). His current research is focusedon qualitative methods, information technologies in policing and the transformation of the policing ofIreland after the publication of the Patten report (1999). He has been recently a Visiting Professor at theHong King Institute of Education and is a Fellow at the Center of Criminology at The University of HongKong. Most recently, he has been a lecturer at the Police College of Hangzhou, China.

SCJA Position AnnouncementEditorAmerican Journal of Criminal Justice (AJCJ)The Southern Criminal Justice Association (SCJA) is seeking applications for the position of editor of theAmerican Journal of Criminal Justice (AJCJ), the official journal of SCJA. AJCJ is a refereed publicationand manuscripts go through a blind review process. The focus of AJCJ is on a wide array of criminal justicetopics and issues. Some of these include items pertaining to the criminal justice process, the formal andinformal interplay between system components, problems and solutions experienced by various segments,innovative practices, policy development and implementation, evaluative research, the players engaged inthese enterprises, and a wide assortment of other related interests. The AJCJ publishes original articles thatutilize a broad range of methodologies and perspectives when examining crime, law, and criminal justiceprocessing. The editor will be responsible for the continuation of administering a high quality academicjournal for the SCJA membership and public. The editor will set editorial policy, select deputy and associateeditors, maintain a peer review system, and manage the journal. Proposals for co-editorships will not beconsidered.Selection criteria: Criteria to be considered for selecting the Editor include:-Earned PhD in criminal justice or associated field.SCJA membership in good standing for three continuous years at the time of application.Demonstrated record of scholarly activity as measured by such indicators as publications in refereedjournals, book publications, and other publications. Strong preference will be given to applicants whohave published in the American Journal of Criminal Justice.Prior editorial experience as measured by such indicators as previous experience as an Editor of anacademic peer-reviewed journal, past experience as an associate/deputy editor of an academic peerreviewed journal, or other editorial experience (editorial board member, reviewer, etc.).Application Due Date, Starting Date, and Editorial Term: Nominations are due viaemail to the Chair of the Editor Search Committee (Dr. Sean Maddan, smaddan@ut.edu) by January 15,2017. The new editor will be selected by March 1, 2017 and will begin the transition to editor in Summer2017. The new editor will begin receiving (and soliciting, at least initially) manuscripts in Fall 2017 to preparefor a first issue in early 2018. The length of the editorial term is 3 years (2018, 2019, 2020).Application Procedure: Applications should be submitted no later than January 15, 2017 toDr. Sean Maddan, Editor Search Committee Chair at smaddan@ut.edu.
