What is a everyday job? We use that phrasevery often but never question our motive forusing it. Do we determine a everyday job byan individual doing a certain task everyday,or do we characterize it by the jobs that aremore obtainable by your “typical person”?In a sense it seems like a combination of bothscenarios.
The list of everyday jobs can go to infinity.Our world is so diverse and complex that theneed of billions of jobs are essential. Ifeveryone specialized in one general task thegrowth of our world would cease.The plethora of different jobs across theworld helps balance the flow of our economy,society, and personal lives.
Each job requires different duties.A waitress must be able to multitaskefficiently, with taking orders, getting refills,and properly communicating with thecustomer.In the article Blue Collar Brilliance theauthor’s mother Rose “took pride in beingamong the public” as a waitress. She hadmany duties that came with being anwaitress.
A person of higher job description mightlabel her job as simple and non important.From their view point their assumption wouldbe correct. But for a person of experience asfor Rosie their assumption would displayignorance.
They wouldn’t understand how difficult herjob was. Having to take care of six tables at atime. Walking repeatedly back and forththrough the restaurant. Carrying four platesto a table of starving people. Being able torecommend certain dishes to new costumers.All of these things and more is in the jobdescription of an waitress.
To me each job requires you to be able tosolve an problem. In Rosie’s case it couldhave been a number of things “from theemotions that accompany hunger, to asometimes complicated desire for humancontact”(Brilliance).Through her job she learned and studiedhuman behavior. Without even knowing shedabbed a little into Psychology.
I believe we characterize and label jobs titlesbecause we are uneducated of what it reallytakes to successfully work and keep aparticular job.We as humans fall back into culture mythswith blue collar, white collar, and pink collarjobs.Without knowing we constrict ourselves whichgeneral thinking.
Money distracts us from learning more abouteach other. This goes back to the differentcollar jobs. We often correlate the moremoney the job pays the more important it is. Idisagree with this assumption. Yes there is asalary difference from a Cardiologist to aTruck driver but who am I or anyone else tosay one is more or less important than theother.
In Blue Collar Brilliance the author shows usthat intelligence is closely associated withformal education. “Generalizations aboutintelligence, work, and social class deeplyaffect our assumptions about ourselves andeach other, guiding the ways we use ourminds to learn, build knowledge, solveproblems, and make our way through theworld”( Brilliance).
In order to overcome ignorance we have tochange our way of thinking. Stop constrictingthe mind by thinking general and branch out.Don’t settle for less when you are capable ofachieving so much more.Your background culture, religion, race orgender does not define who you are and whatyou can become.
This article expressed an importance of “whatdo you know and what do you do with whatyou know?”.The answer to this question will vary byperson because we are all different andknowledgeable of various things.What is important is that you take pride inwhat you do and how you do it.
In order to grow globally we must notoverlook our neighbor. We have to researchand learn about the world we live in and whowe live in it with. With that we will learn toappreciate one another through our diversity.We all contribute different attributes whichhelps the balance of our world.
