01 Service and maintenance012012 Service and Maintenance RequirementsCustomer Preparation ServiceYour Volvo has received a comprehensiveCustomer Preparation Service. Your retail facility has performed a Customer PreparationService which includes a complete inspection and servicing of your vehicle. The Customer Preparation Service (CPS) is a key partof a comprehensive maintenance scheduledeveloped by Volvo for your vehicle.Oil and Filter Change IntervalThe correct oil and filter interval is every7,500 miles 12,000 km or 12 monthsWHICHEVER COMES FIRST. For service intervals beyond 150,000 miles / 240,000 kilometers, please consult your authorized Volvoretailer.Cabin Air Filter All Models Replacement every 15,000 miles (24,000km) Replace every 10,000 miles (16,000 km) inheavy traffic and dirty/dusty areas.Maintenance SchedulingMaintenance intervals have usually been determined by accumulated mileage. As drivingconditions and operational demands differ, these factors have a major influence on routine maintenance. For these reasons Volvorecommends that your maintenance sched-8ule services and oil filter changes be basedon a combination of time and mileage. All vehicles except XC90The Text Window in the instrument panel willdisplay a message when vehicle maintenance is required.1st display when maintenance interval isnear: "Book time for maintenance"2nd display when maintenance is required:"Time for regular maintenance"3rd display when maintenance is overdue:"Maintenance overdue"XC90The message "Time for regular maintenance"will display when the maintenance intervalhas been reached. The MINIMUM SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE, for which you are responsible, begins at 7,500 miles/12,000 km or every 12months whichever comes first.Volvo recommends that you bring your vehicle in for service at least once a year regardless of mileage. For service intervals beyond150,000 miles / 240,000 kilometers, consultyour authorized Volvo retailer.A maintenance Service Operations Chart, onpage 14, details these service requirements. They are listed by engine type with requiredemission related service indicated.Service SupportDiscuss your vehicle's special servicingneeds with your Volvo Retail Facility's Service Staff. They can tailor a maintenance program based on your requirements. Your Volvo Retailer has access to the latest up-todate technical information, special tools, andadvanced training for their technicians. Thissupport is an important advantage to you,the Volvo owner, as systems become moresophisticated and intricate.Servicing your Volvo should be done at yourconvenience. Therefore, plan to make yourappointments ahead of time so that your retailer can schedule the right personnel andequipment to be available for the work yourVolvo requires.Should you have any questions concerningservice, parts, or warranty coverage, yourVolvo retailer will be happy to answer themfor you. Should you require additional information, they can further assist you by contacting Volvo's Regional personnel for clarification.

01 Service and maintenance2012 Service and Maintenance Requirements01Remember - you should always exerciseyour right to: Receive an estimate of costs before anyrepair work is performed; Receive prior notification of any additionalrepairs; Receive a copy of the repair order, including those for warranty repairs; Review repairs completed under warranty.ServicingItems you should check at regular maintenance intervals and periodically when refueling: Engine oil levelCoolant levelWasher fluidTire inflation pressureBrake and clutch system fluid levelsExterior lights (headlights, turn-signals,etc.)9

01 Service and maintenanceFuel Requirements01Octane Ratingengines capacity, and for the smoothest possible operation.MINIMUMNOTEWhen switching to higher octane fuel orchanging gasoline brands, it may be necessary to fill the tank more than once before adifference in engine operation is noticeable.Use of AdditivesWith the exception of gas line antifreeze during winter months, do not add solvents, thickeners, or other store-bought additives toyour vehicle's fuel, cooling, or lubricatingsystems. Overuse may damage your engine, and some of these additives contain organically volatile chemicals. Do not needlesslyexpose yourself to these chemicals.G028920Fuel FormulationsTypical pump octane labelVolvo recommends premium fuel for bestperformance, but using 87 octane1 or abovewill not affect engine reliability.Volvo engines are designed to achieve ratedhorsepower, torque, and fuel economy performance using premium 91 octane fuel. Indemanding conditions, such as operating thevehicle in hot weather, towing a trailer, ordriving for extended periods at higher altitudes than normal, it may be advisable toswitch to higher octane fuel (91 or higher) orto change gasoline brands to fully utilize your110AKI (ANTI KNOCK INDEX) is an average of theResearch Octane Number (RON) and the Motor Octane Number (MON), MON RON/2.Do not use gasoline that contains lead as aknock inhibitor, and do not use lead additives. Besides damaging the exhaust emission control systems on your vehicle, leadhas been strongly linked to certain forms ofcancer. Many fuels contain benzene as a solvent. Unburned benzene has been strongly linked tocertain forms of cancer. If you live in an areawhere you must fill your own gas tank, takeprecautions. These may include: standing upwind away from the filler nozzle while refueling refueling only at gas stations with vaporrecovery systems that fully seal the mouthof the filler neck during refueling wearing neoprene gloves while handling afuel filler nozzle.WARNINGNever carry a cell phone that is switchedon while refueling your vehicle. If the phonerings, this may cause a spark that could ignite gasoline fumes, resulting in fire and injury.WARNINGCarbon monoxide is a poisonous, colorless, and odorless gas. It is present in all exhaustgases. If you ever smell exhaust fumes inside the vehicle, make sure the passengercompartment is ventilated, and immediatelyreturn the vehicle to a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician for correction.Deposit control gasoline (detergentadditives)Volvo recommends the use of detergent gasoline to control engine deposits. Detergentgasoline is effective in keeping injectors and

01 Service and maintenanceFuel Requirementsintake valves clean. Consistent use of deposit control gasolines will help ensure gooddrivability and fuel economy. If you are notsure whether the gasoline contains depositcontrol additives, check with the service station operator.NOTEVolvo does not recommend the use of external fuel injector cleaning systems.NOTESome U.S. and Canadian gasolines containan octane enhancing additive called methyl-cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT). If such fuels are used, yourEmission Control System performance maybe affected, and the Check Engine Light(malfunction indicator lamp) located on yourinstrument panel may light. If this occurs, please return your vehicle to an authorizedVolvo retailer for service.01system. Such damage may not be coveredunder the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.Volvo allows the use of the following "oxygenated" fuels; however, the octane ratingslisted on page 10 must still be met.Alcohol – EthanolFuels containing up to 10% ethanol by volume may be used. Ethanol may also be referred to as Ethyl alcohol, or "Gasohol."Ethers – MTBEUnleaded fuelEach Volvo has a three-way catalytic converter and must use only unleaded gasoline.U.S. and Canadian regulations require thatpumps delivering unleaded gasoline be labelled "UNLEADED". Only these pumps havenozzles which fit your vehicle's filler inlet. It isunlawful to dispense leaded fuel into a vehicle labelled "unleaded gasoline only". Leaded gasoline damages the three-way catalyticconverter and the heated oxygen sensor system. Repeated use of leaded gasoline willlessen the effectiveness of the emission control system and could result in loss of emission warranty coverage. State and local vehicle inspection programs will make detectionof misfueling easier, possibly resulting inemission test failure for misfueled vehicles.Gasoline containing alcohol andethers (oxygenated fuels)Fuels containing up to 15% MTBE may beused. Some fuel suppliers sell gasoline containing"oxygenates" which are usually alcohols orethers. In some areas, state or local laws require that the service pump be marked indicating use of alcohols or ethers. However, there are areas in which the pumps are unmarked. If you are not sure whether there isalcohol or ethers in the gasoline you buy, check with the service station operator. Tomeet seasonal air quality standards, someareas require the use of "oxygenated" fuel.MethanolDo not use gasolines containing methanol(methyl alcohol, wood alcohol). This practicecan result in vehicle performance deterioration and can damage critical parts in the fuel11

01 Service and maintenance01Engine oilOil specificationsAmerican Petroleum Institute (API) symbolEngine oil must meet the minimum ILSACspecification GF-4, API SL, or ACEA A1/B1.Lower quality oils may not offer the same fueleconomy, engine performance, or engineprotection.Oil additives must not be used.Synthetic oil is not used when the oil ischanged at the normal maintenance services. This oil is only used at customer request,at additional charge. Please consult yourVolvo retailer.Oil viscosityIncorrect viscosity oil can shorten engine lifeunder normal use. SAE 5W-30 will providegood fuel economy and engine protection.See the viscosity chart.12Viscosity chartExtreme engine operationSynthetic oils meeting SAE 0W-30 or 0W-40and complying with oil quality requirementsare recommended for driving in areas of sustained temperature extremes (hot or cold),when towing a trailer over long distances, and for prolonged driving in mountainous areas.G022917Depending on your driving habits, premiumor synthetic oils may provide superior fueleconomy and engine protection. Consultyour Volvo retailer for recommendations onpremium or synthetic oils.23491Volvo recommends Castrol. The API Service Symbol "donut" is dividedinto three parts: The upper section describes the oil's performance level. The center identifies the oil's viscosity. The lower section indicates whether the oilhas demonstrated energy-conservingproperties in a standard test in comparison to a reference oil.

01 Service and maintenanceTurbocharger Operating TipsIn order to maximize the efficiency and operation of your vehicle, the following pointsshould be observed:1. Oil change and filter replacement every7,500 miles/12,000 km, or at a time interval based on the type of driving andconditions as detailed in your Owner'sManual. You should maintain a record ofthese services (repair order receipts).2. Do not use engine oil additives asthey may adversely affect the engine.3. Use correct oil specifications (API) rating grade SL. Volvo recommends theuse of energy-conserving oils. Only oilof correct viscosity rating may be used.Refer to "Oil Specifications" onpage 12.01cool down while still receiving oil lubrication. If the turbine vanes are spinning at highspeeds when the engine is switched off, there is a great risk of heat damage and/orturbine seizure due to lack of lubrication. Donot race the engine just prior to switchingoff!IMPORTANTNever race the engine immediately afterstarting. Oil flow may not reach some lubricating points fast enough to prevent turbocharger damage. Before switching off the engine, let it operateat idle for a short time to allow the spinning ofthe turbocharger compressor's turbine vanesto slow. After hard driving, this idle timeshould last a couple of minutes, during whichthe vanes will slow and the compressor will13
