Herpg. 1INT. UNKNOWN SPACEClose on THEODORE’S face (30s). We hold on him for a longtime. He’s looking at something off camera, deep in thought.He starts quietly dictating a love letter into a smallmicrophone.THEODORETo my Chris, I have been thinkingabout how I could possibly tell youhow much you mean to me. I rememberwhen I first started to fall inlove with you like it was lastnight. Lying naked beside you inthat tiny apartment, it suddenlyhit me that I was part of thiswhole larger thing, just like ourparents, and our parents’ parents.Before that I was just living mylife like I knew everything, andsuddenly this bright light hit meand woke me up. That light was you.Theodore, searching for the right words, quietly enjoyswriting the letter. As he continues, he is moved by thememories he’s describing.THEODORE (CONT’D)I can’t believe it’s already been50 years since you married me. Andstill to this day, every day, youmake me feel like the girl I waswhen you first turned on the lightsand woke me up and we started thisadventure together. HappyAnniversary, my love and my friendtil the end. Loretta. Print.Cut out to reveal a computer monitor he’s sitting at. On thescreen we see the letter he’s been dictating, transcribedinto a handwritten letter on blue stationery.As he says “Loretta,” we see “Loretta” being handwritten atthe bottom of the letter. He proofreads his letter. Also onthe screen are photos of a couple in their 80s. The couple istagged “Chris” and “Me - Loretta.” Underneath is a bulletpoint email from Loretta: anniversary letter to husbandChris, married fifty years, love of my life, met right aftercollege, have had the greatest life together.Theodore pushes print and the letter comes out on a beautifulrobin’s egg blue piece of stationery, with ball point penhandwritten older-female cursive. He looks at it, not happy.(CONTINUED)

There is also a stackof finished letters in their envelopes - an assortment ofbeautiful stationery in all shapes and sizes.THEODORE (CONT’D)Chris, my best friend. How lucky amI that I met you fifty years ago?How lucky are we.We track off of Theodore, down a line of cubicles, hearingbits of letters being written and seeing photos of whothey’re being written to on the screens.MIDDLE-AGED WOMAN LETTER WRITERDear Nana, Thank you so much for mytruck. I love the color and I playwith it every day. It’s the besttruck I’ve ever seen. Love, Tommy.We see photos of Tommy and Nana on the screen, and five-yearold hand writing. Moving off of her, we find another letterwriter.LETTER WRITER 2What a beautiful wedding and what agorgeous bride. There wasn’t a dryeye in the house, especially mine.Your aunt and I are so proud ofyou. I hope you and your lovely newwife will come visit us in Florida.LETTER WRITER 3He served our country with honorand dignity. I’m grateful I wasable to fight along side him. The office isalmost empty except for him and the receptionist, PAUL.Theodore begins to scan each letter through a scanner on thefront desk, then puts them in the outgoing mailbox.Paul is sitting at a desk across the room, readinghandwritten letters on a computer monitor.PAULTheodore! Letter Writer 612.Hey, Paul.THEODOREPAULEven more mesmerizing stuff today.(re: letter on his screen)Who knew you could rhyme so manywords with the name Penelope?Badass.THEODOREThanks, Paul, but they’re justletters.(beat)Hey, that’s a nice shirt.Paul is wearing a bright yellow button down shirt.PAUL(lighting up)Oh, thank you. The LA basin is morecrowded and dense, resembling Shanghai, with buildings as faras the eye can see. Construction cranes loom overhead. Closeon Theodore walking through the commuter crowd.THEODORECheck emails.An awkward text voice reads to him. His avatar is in a surreal, foreign landscape.He’s trying to trudge his avatar through sand dunes and keepsgetting stuck. He’s getting stressed out.INT. THEODORE’S BEDROOM - NIGHTTheodore lays in bed. After a beat, he closes his eyes.INT. CATHERINE AND THEODORE’S TINY BEDROOM - DAY - FLASHBACKTheodore, younger, and CATHERINE (20s) move furniture intheir bedroom. The bedroom is tiny and cluttered.
