About Stetson University College of LawFounded in 1900, Stetson University Collegeof Law is Florida’s first law school. With itsmain law campus in Gulfport and a satellitecampus in Tampa, Stetson is fully accredited by theAmerican Bar Association and has been a member ofthe Association of American Law Schools since 1931.With more than 1,000 students, Stetson Lawis ranked first in the nation for trial advocacyand third for legal writing. In addition to thejuris doctor law degree, Stetson offers certificatesof concentration in advocacy, elder law, andinternational law, dual-degree programs for theJ.D./M.B.A., J.D./M.P.H., J.D./M.D., and J.D./Grado (Spain), and LL.M. degrees in elder law andinternational law.Stetson is home to the Centers for Excellencein Advocacy, Elder Law, Higher Education Lawand Policy, and International Law, and Institutesfor Biodiversity Law and Policy and CaribbeanLaw and Policy. Students can furtherexpand their practical experience by participatingin clinical or internship opportunities.Stetson University’s DeLand campus is hometo the College of Arts and Sciences, School ofBusiness Administration, and School of Music.The Stetson University Center at Celebrationoffers graduate and professional developmentprograms.The Symbols of CommencementGraduates’ Academic Regalia: Academicdisciplines are noted by color; law is representedas purple. The doctoral gown has bell sleeves withvelvet chevrons on the sleeves and velvet on thepanels. The hood is bound and edged with purplevelvet and lined with green, the official color ofStetson University as the institution conferring thedegree. The square cap combines the symbolism ofthe book and that of a privileged guild. Studentsgraduating with anticipated honors wear a goldtassel on the cap, and others wear a purple tasseldenoting the discipline of law.Students wearing purple cords are LL.M.graduates. Gold cords are worn by studentsgraduating with anticipated honors. Studentleaders and named award winners are wearinggreen cords. Students wearing blue cords haveearned the William F. Blews Pro Bono ServiceAward. Co-Valedictorians are wearing gold stoles.2The Mace: The Stetson University Mace,used during all commencement ceremonies,is a ceremonial staff used by many academicinstitutions as a symbol of the right to conferdegrees. The Stetson mace, designed byEpiscopalian Canon Edward Nason West of theCathedral Church of St. John the Divine, NewYork, was presented to President J. Ollie Edmundsin 1956.The Medallion: The President’s Medallion, wornat official academic occasions, was first used forthe inauguration of President John E. Johns in1969. The silver medallion includes the UniversitySeal embraced by a wreath of laurel. The circularseal, adopted between 1889 and 1891, bears themotto Pro Deo et Veritate (“For God and Truth”)and the Light of Truth resting on the Book ofWisdom.

Coleman, you are a leading expert on torts and thephilosophy of law.Over your distinguished scholarly career, you earned a Ph.D. inphilosophy from Rockefeller University, an M.S.L. from Yale LawSchool, and a bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College. You haveauthored several books including Hart’s Postscript, The Practice ofPrinciple, and have co-authored the Oxford Handbook of Jurisprudenceand the Philosophy of Law.You hold the Wesley Newcomb Hohfeld Professor of Jurisprudence and Professor ofPhilosophy at Yale Law School.
