TEST INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS TO SYSTEMIC FAILURESWe believe long-standing problemsrequire new solutions.MASS INCARCERATIONOur graduates with histories of incarceration were91% less likely to re-offend when compared to thenational average for returning citizens. Just this year,our efforts to put people back to work and break thecycle of incarceration saved taxpayers 1.2 million.FOOD WASTEWe advocated for the “Save Good Food Act,” locallegislation to decrease food waste in Washington, DC.FOOD DESERTSWe conducted our first-ever geo-targeted marketingcampaign for Healthy Corners, advertising on metrostations and bus lines in DC’s Ward 8. This campaignincreased sales at targeted stores by as much as 96%.CHRONIC DISEASE ANDCHILDHOOD OBESITYWe started an in-classroominitiative, “Cafeteria Chefs,”where students learn aboutand prepare healthy recipesthey see on the lunch line.Consumption of saladgreens among students wereached increased by 466%.

MEET ALIYAHAlthough 19-year-old Aliyah hadovercome significant challengesbefore coming to DC Central Kitchen,she was still struggling to securereliable employment and achievefinancial stability. “My life was incompletely shattered pieces,” sherecalls. Aliyah was ready for a changebut lacked the training she neededto enter the workforce.After graduating from DC CentralKitchen, Aliyah was hired full-timeat Marriott Marquis as the youngestemployee on the team. She nowhas a promising career ahead of herand the financial means to supportherself and rent her own apartment.“I wouldn’t be here without DCCentral Kitchen,” she says.MEET CHRISChris arrived at DC Central Kitchenafter serving a 14-year prisonsentence and struggling with ahistory of abuse. “For a long time, Ididn’t like who I was, and I hid fromthe truth,” he explains.After completing our trainingprogram, Chris joined our teamfull-time at DC Central Kitchen’ssocial enterprise hub. Within a year,he saved up enough money to takehis first vacation to reunite withhis family in Hawaii. Since then, hehas moved into his own apartmentand taken on the additional role ofresident manager of his building.“Today, I have no shame of mytruth,” he says.
