Pete Prados St. John Paul IIThe death of loved one is something all of us will face. There are numerous practical issueswith which we must deal. Pre-need planning is a prudent thing to do, not only in regards to awill and financial arrangements but with a funeral director and also the parish. It is importantthat all family members know, understand and respect the teachings of our Catholic Faith inregards to the death of a loved one. At the time of death, the parish should be notified. Withthe funeral directors, a day and time will be set for the funeral liturgies. A meeting will alsobe scheduled for the family to meet with our Funeral Aid Ministry, pastoral staff and parishclergy. In this meeting, the details necessary to prepare for the Funeral (readings, music, reception, etc.) will be discussed. Our Catholic Faith holds great reverence for the body as the temple of the Holy Spirit. For thisreason, we give respect and honor to the body in death as we do in life. There is a preferencein Catholic theology, teaching and practice that the body of the deceased be buried.Cremation is allowed in the Catholic Church but not for any reason which would be contrary toCatholic teaching. Even when cremation is chosen there is a strong preference that theFuneral Mass be celebrated with the body present with the cremation following. The funerals rites of the Church take place in three parts or stations. The First Station is theVigil. This is normally conducted in the funeral home the evening prior to the Funeral Massand consists of the gathering of family and friends in prayer. The Vigil Service may be prayedand/or the recitation of the rosary. This is the most appropriate time for remembrances andeulogies. The second station is the Funeral Mass. The body is brought to the church and Massis offered for the repose of the soul of the deceased and prayers for the consolation of thefamily are also offered. Eulogies are most appropriate at the Vigil Service and may not takethe place of the homily at Mass. After communion, a family member may make brief remarksof 2-3 minutes in remembrance of the deceased and to express the gratitude of the family tothe gathered mourners. The third station is the burial and Rite of Committal which normallytakes place at the cemetery immediately following the Funeral Mass. Following the burial, areception for family and friends is often held at the family home or at the parish. In those instances where cremation has been chosen, the committal is delayed and takesplace after the body has been cremated and the remains are ready. Cremated remains are tobe treated with respect and dignity and should be buried or interred in a columbarium. Theyshould never be scattered or merely stored or left unattended. When the body cannot bepresent and there is to be a direct cremation, a Funeral Mass with the ashes present and theRite of Committal should still be held without unnecessary delay. When the ashes cannot bepresent or a delay is unavoidable, a Memorial Mass for the Dead is to be offered. EveryCatholic should receive the prayers of the Church at the time of death. A proper Catholicburial and the rites of the Church should not be denied to any member of the Church.Lastly, we should always pray for the dead. We pray for their souls in our private prayers andat mass. We can offer masses to be prayed for them. We can visit their graves and we praythat we might be given the grace to live our lives in a holy manner so as to be reunited withthem in the Kingdom of God.Catholic School1400 Parkway Plaza Dr.Houston, TX 77077281.496.1500Pre K-8th GradeIn Pace Christi,

NOVEMBER 10, 2019Social service ministrySJV’s Mission Team Members Return from Eagle PassTwo weeks ago, 17 SJV Parishioners participated in a Service Mission Trip to Eagle Pass, TX. Our Team was thrilled towelcome 5 first-time participants! Over the course of five days and braving 40 degree weather in the morning, the teamcompleted a great deal of work on three homes. Below are before and after pictures for each home. The first home belongs to two single sisters living with small children. Making minimum wage, they had not been ableto afford the repairs that the home needed. The team re-roofed the house and replaced water damaged siding on halfthe house. They insulated, replaced fascia, soffits and trim, installed gutters, repainted the house and dug trenches todivert runoff water away from the house. The second home belongs to a gentleman who is paralyzed on his left side due to a stroke. The team replaced two doorswith 36” wide doors to allow him access to the bathroom, and they helped him customize the bathroom and shower tofit his needs. The owner of the third home is an elderly lady in her 80s, who for many years had been the only ballet teacher in EaglePass. Complications from a neck surgery gone wrong partially paralyzed her legs. The team installed two window unitair conditioners, repaired roofing on part of her house, replaced and painted bird damaged siding on part of her house, repaired cupboards which were falling down, and repaired a door which had shifted. In addition to meeting and assisting new families, the Team continues to foster the relationships with the homeboundwhom we have assisted in the past. They also make time for fellowship and growing together in their faith. We thankand congratulate our Mission Team! Your hard work and generosity of spirit are true examples of what it is to live yourfaith, change lives and make a difference!Follow the Team’s work on Facebook at SJV Social Service Ministry.

November 10, 461)With apparent strong conviction of the importance of the Bishop of Rome in the Church, and of the Church as the ongoing sign of Christ’spresence in the world, Leo the Great displayed endless dedication as pope. Elected in 440, he worked tirelessly as “Peter’s successor,” guidinghis fellow bishops as “equals in the episcopacy and infirmities.”Leo is known as one of the best administrative popes of the ancient Church. His work branched into four main areas, indicative of his notion ofthe pope’s total responsibility for the flock of Christ. He worked at length to control the heresies of Pelagianism—overemphasizing humanfreedom—Manichaeism—seeing everything material as evil—and others, placing demands on their followers so as to secure true Christianbeliefs.A second major area of his concern was doctrinal controversy in the Church in the East, to which he responded with a classic letter setting downthe Church’s teaching on the two natures of Christ. With strong faith, he also led the defense of Rome against barbarian attack, taking the roleof peacemaker. In these three areas, Leo’s work has been highly regarded. His growth to sainthood has its basis in the spiritual depth with which he approachedthe pastoral care of his people, which was the fourth focus of his work. He is known for his spiritually profound sermons. An instrument of thecall to holiness, well-versed in Scripture and ecclesiastical awareness, Leo had the ability to reach the everyday needs and interests of hispeople. One of his sermons is used in the Office of Readings on Christmas. It is said of Leo that his true significance rests in his doctrinal insistence on the mysteries of Christ and the Church and in the supernaturalcharisms of the spiritual life given to humanity in Christ and in his Body, the Church. Thus Leo held firmly that everything he did and said aspope for the administration of the Church represented Christ, the head of the Mystical Body, and Saint Peter, in whose place Leo acted.

The third station is the burial and Rite of ommittal which normally takes place at the cemetery immediately following the Funeral Mass. Following the burial, a reception for family and friends is often held at the family home or at the parish. In those instances where cremation has been chosen, the committal is delayed and takes
