PORSCHES AND MOREBy Geoff PaulsenThe day was already bright and clear as cars began toassemble in San Ramon for the July First Sunday Drive. Thiswas a particularly eventful drive, because we had invited thePorsche Club to join us. And join us they did, meeting us inequal numbers for a total of 41 cars in all. We chatted andgot to know each other, admiring the respective makes, beforeShawn asked if anyone had both a Mercedes and a Porsche.About eight hands shot up. Others began to reminisce aboutthe other make they had owned. As we set off, the Porsches in particular seemed eager to leapoff onto the curving roads they are known to devour. However,we had been reminded that since it was Sunday and we weredriving, we had in fact become the despised “Sunday drivers”-and due to the large number of cyclists and other vehicles, weprobably would not be able to fully enjoy the capabilities of ourfine German machines.Soon, the route took us through the familiar rolling oak studdedhills of the East Bay Area. We dropped into shaded canyonswhere oaks, maples and sycamores leaned out over the roadto make a cool, creekside tunnel – a pleasant feature on whatwas becoming a warm summer day. Then parts of California history began to appear, startingwith the Niles Canyon Railroad - part of the original 1860stranscontinental route. When the canyon opened up into agrassy valley, I was reminded of Charlie Chaplin, who had hisstudios here and filmed “The Tramp” in Niles Canyon beforeHollywood was big. Then we passed Sunol, which elected adog as mayor in 1981. This gained international notoriety whenChina’s People’s Daily cited it as example of how Americanelections don’t work.Sometimes the Sunday drives end in a parking lot, andsometimes they end in a truly delightful location--like thisdrive. The Wente Winery afforded ample parking among thegrapevines, wine tasting under towering trees, and deliciousfood. Sixty-six of our participants stayed for lunch, filling thebanquet room and overflowing into the restaurant and onto theveranda.I particularly enjoyed meeting an old family friend who is a longterm Porsche driver, and I’m sure other club members wereable to see old friends or make new ones as well.7
