North Central Michigan College Catalog 2012-13Get Ready to Earn a Degree or Certificate at North CentralThe decision to pursue a degree or specializedcertificate puts you on a path of self-discoveryand potential future success. You are choosingto invest in your future. Below is a summary ofpolicies, procedures and terms you will need tounderstand and follow to be successful.General Admission PolicyNorth Central follows an open-door policy ofadmitting high school graduates or GED holders,non-high school graduates at least 18 years ofage and high school students under MichiganDual Enrollment guidelines.There is no cost to apply for admission to NorthCentral. All students must demonstrate theability to benefit from the instructional programsoffered by the College. Testing and/or priorcollege transcripts are used to determine abilityto benefit. Assessment testing standards arebased on federal financial aid guidelines forability to benefit.RegistrationRegistration is completed through the NorthCentral website. Students access theregistration module through the College Portal.For complete registration information, includingcourse schedules, log on to www.ncmich.edu.It is recommended that students keep a copy ofall registration activity. A copy of theconfirmation screen verifying added/droppedcourses(s) or a dated printout of the student’sschedule can serve as proof if discrepanciesarise.During early registration periods prior to eachsemester, students can register with paymentdeferred until a specific published date. TheCollege reserves the right to drop a student fromall classes by the published due date unless fullpayment is made, the student has certifiedfinancial aid or the student has signed up for thedeferred payment plan.Mandatory Orientation and AdvisingNew students who plan to enroll in at least threecredits at North Central are required to attend anorientation and advising session beforeregistering for courses. Guest, personalinterest, direct credit and dual-enrolled studentsare exempt from the requirement. Transferstudents may be exempt once they have shownproof of 15 credits with a C or better from anaccredited institution. Those already holding acredential from a college or university may beexempt upon North Central’s receipt of atranscript with the credential noted. Themandatory orientation and advising sessions areheld both on and off campus. Students shouldcall Student Services to register for a session.Working with an AdvisorThe mission of the academic advising programis to assist students in the development ofmeaningful educational plans.Academic advisors help students select classes,develop an academic plan and assist withadjustment to college life.North Central students are encouraged to seekacademic advice from faculty members,advisors and counselors. Students who placeinto developmental classes through assessmenttesting are required to meet with an advisorbefore registering for classes until they havecompleted foundational courses.Students interested in a career program shouldalso make an appointment to speak with theprogram coordinator. Names of coordinatorsare listed with each program of study in thiscatalog.In addition to seeing an advisor, students canmonitor their own progress toward completion ofa declared certificate or degree via the College’sregistration portal. Contact Student Services toupdate a program of study. Students can log inand use the navigation tools titled “Advising” and“Course Needs” to determine remaining coursework needed to attain their goals.Programs of StudyStudents often change the direction of theircareer and educational plans. North Central Michigan College Catalog 2012-13Degree Completion PlanA written plan for attaining the student’seducational goal. The plan usually outlines thecourses or categories of courses that should beselected each semester over the length of thestudent’s intended time at North Central. It isdeveloped by the student with a counselor oracademic advisor.Enrollment statusFull-time status means a student is enrolled inclasses totaling 12 or more credit hours duringthe regular fall or winter semester; enrollment in11 or fewer credit hours constitutes part-timestatus. Financial aid recipients should consultfinancial aid policies contained in this catalog asthe enrollment status rules are different than forthose for academic standing.SemesterEach semester is typically 16 weeks for fall andwinter, eight weeks in the summer.Steps to Becoming a North Central student(Admission and Registration)1. Portal sign-up: Go to www.ncmich.edu, clickon Student and Community Portal. Completesign-in and you will be directed to theAdmissions Application.2. Apply for admission: No cost. You will benotified of your status and next steps by mail.3. If you have attended othercolleges/universities: Request officialtranscripts from all colleges you have attendedbe sent to the North Central Records Office,1515 Howard Street, Petoskey, MI 49770.4. Apply for financial aid: Go towww.ncmich.edu under Financial Aid. Applyearly: processing takes at least four weeks.5. Assessment (mandatory): Standardizedtesting is used to place students into the Englishand mathematics courses. Request that yourACT scores be sent to North Central. TheCOMPASS test may be used as an alternativeto the ACT examination. Allow sufficient time toprepare for and take the test. Testing is byappointment. Allow two hours to complete.There is no cost for the COMPASS, but there isa fee for retakes.6. SmarterMeasure (mandatory beforeregistration): Sign in to the Portal and select10SmarterMeasure tab. Complete the personalassessments. You will learn about yourstrengths and opportunities for growth.7. Mandatory Orientation and AdvisingSession: You will learn expectations,processes, planning and course selection.8. Register and pay for classes: Log in to theStudent and Community Portal using yourusername and password. Choose My NorthCentral, then Online Registration. Payment duedates are published on the web, on the paperclass schedule each semester and on your bill.For payment options, go to www.ncmich.edu,and click on Paying for College.9. Use your free College MyMail emailaccount: Your MyMail account will be theprimary way you will receive correspondencefrom North Central. Your username is the sameas your Portal username; your address would be“username@student.ncmich.edu”10. Purchase textbooks.
