Prepared: November 2, 20192018 - present Advisory Committee to the Surgeon General, SurgeonGeneral's Report on Addressing Tobacco-RelatedDisparitiesAuthorUNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICESERVICE ACTIVITIES SUMMARYIn the Academic Senate, I served on the Committee on Research and Committee on EqualOpportunity, which included leadership in developing systems to track diversity amongpostdoctoral trainees, and contributed to new systems, such as the current Advance CVsystem, to document contributions to diversity at the University. I served as Chair of the UCSFSenate Committee on Committees, and am now Chair of the UC Systemwide Committee onCommittees. I have contributed consistently to intramural peer grant review, including serviceon the Clinical Services Research Review Committee, which provides peer review for grantapplications in the intramural Research Allocation Program several times per year, and ourDivision peer grant review activities. I have also been a member of several promotion andsearch committees at UCSF. My major public service activity has been as an active memberof the Tobacco Education and Research Oversight Committee, where I was appointed by theCalifornia State Senate and I have been reappointed continuously since 2007. This committeeoversees the California Tobacco Control Program, research activities and school educationprograms for the State of California, which many regard to be the world's leading tobaccoprogram. I have contributed to four "Master Plans" for the state of California in tobacco control.Nationally I serve on the NIH Community Influences on Health Behavior study section, and Iam being nominated to chair the study section.UNIVERSITY SERVICEUC SYSTEM AND MULTI-CAMPUS SERVICE2016 - 2017Negotiated Salary Trial Program fourth-year Taskforce,University of California Office of the PresidentMember2017 - 2018University Committee on CommitteesUCSF DivisionRepresentative2018 - 2019University Committee on CommitteesVice Chair2019 - present University Committee on CommitteesChairUCSF CAMPUSWIDE2002 - present Primary faculty mentor for primary care residents, UCSFDivision of General Internal Medicine2003 - 2003UCSF Fellowship in AIDS CareHost2003 - 2005University of California Davis Center for Health ServicesResearch in Primary Care. I have served as a mentor to minority trainees forseveral years participating in the MTPCCR (minority training program in cancer controlresearch), an NIH funded program that encourages promising minority students to pursuedoctoral degrees. I have also served as a mentor to minority undergraduate interns as part ofthe SF BUILD program, a collaboration between SF State University and UCSF to encourageminority students to pursue doctoral degrees in science. I have mentored several underrepresented Masters and PhD students at UC Berkeley, and I also mentor a junior facultyperson at Santa Clara University initially funded by a minority supplement to my NIH grants. Ihave also built linkages between our postdoctoral fellowship training program with severalUCSF initiatives promoting diversity, including the MTPCCR, the National ScienceFoundation’s Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate "Postdoc bootcamp"which is designed to assist promising minority doctoral students nearing the end of theirtraining to identify and successfully apply for postdoctoral fellowships, the Tobacco ResearchNetwork on Disparities (TReND) meetings, the Society for Nicotine and Tobacco ResearchDisparities Network, and the UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations. Our program pioneeredefforts with the Office of Affirmative Action to develop systems to collect and report deidentified data on minority applicants to the program. This work was presented to theChancellor’s Council on Campus Climate, Culture and Inclusion and Committee on EqualOpportunity, and beaome a campus model on these issues. Our fellowship program hasconsistently performed well on diversity with 20-25% of trainees members of underrepresentedminorities, which is well above the 11% average for postdoctoral training programs at UCSF.From 2011-2014, I served on the Academic Senate Committee on Equal Opportunity. I am aDiversity, Equity and Inclusion Champion, and I have coordinated a series of trainings on DEI14 of 61

Prepared: November 2, 2019topics for our fellowship training program. A strong component of my research addressesissues of equity, as I study tobacco industry targeted marketing strategies that underlietobacco-related health disparities, including efforts to target women, people of lowsocioeconomic status, race/ethnic and sexual and gender minority youth and young adults.TEACHING AND MENTORINGTEACHING SUMMARYI consistently teach clinical medicine in the outpatient clinics (4 hours per week). For 6 years Ialso served as a continuity preceptor for UCSF PISCES students. I serve as a primaryresearch mentor for multiple pre-doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows per year onongoing research projects (meeting weekly with each). I currently mentor 6 post-doctoralfellows, 1 undergraduate interns, 1 graduate student, and 3 junior faculty members in researchprojects. Since 2004 I have been the Fellowship Director for the UCSF Center for TobaccoResearch and Education Tobacco Control Policy Fellowship program. I have been PrincipalInvestigator of fellowship's NIH (National Cancer Institute) T32 training grant since 2016. Iserve as primary mentor for 3-4 fellows, and supervise the overall progress of all of the fellowsin the program (approximately 14-20 fellows per year). I developed and lead the curriculum forpostdoctoral fellows, led the training grant renewal proposal (the last renewal received aperfect score of 10) and I prepare regular annual reports for NIH. I oversee advertising andfellowship recruitment, chair the fellowship admissions committee and admissions process, represent the fellowship to our advisory committee, negotiate positions, and serve as a liasonwith other training programs at UCSF (such as the IHPS/IHA, NIDA funded postdoctoraltraining programs in substance use, and the Cancer Center training programs). I also continueto do didactic teaching in various courses for UCSF students and residents both in tobaccopolicy and research methods, and I have been invited to give research talks for SF BUILDstudent interns and UCSF Year-long Inquiry Program fellows every year since 2016.My teaching evaluations have averaged 4.67 on a 1 to 5 scale for overall effectiveness, and allof my evaluations have been between 8.14 to 8.39 on a 1 to 9 scale for all metrics.FORMAL TEACHINGAcademic Yr2002 - 2004Course No. & TitleNursing S2352002 - 20042003 - 2009Teaching ContributionLecture, seminar leader (1lecture)SchoolNursingClassSize20Mentor for medical studenttobacco documentsresearchers (20 hours)Mentor and Coleader, ResidentScholarship Program,UCSF Division ofGeneral InternalMedicineSupervise research projects Medicineof the group, primary mentorfor 1-2 residents per year;Co-lead biweekly seminars, teach research skills15 of 6110
