StudentClassificationREGULAR STUDENTThose students who are admitted to a degree program.CONDITIONAL STUDENTStudents whose admissions files are missing documentation. Conditionalstudents must submit the requested documentation, to the satisfaction ofCAMD Graduate Studies, no later than the completion of their first month ofstudy. Once the documentation has been submitted, the student’s status willbe re-evaluated.PROVISIONAL STUDENTStudents whose academic records do not qualify them for acceptanceas regular students. Provisional students must obtain a B (3.000) averagein the first nine semester hours of study or meet specifically delineateddepartmental requirements to qualify for full acceptance to a degreeprogram. Provisional students are not eligible for awards or financial aid.SPECIAL STUDENTSpecial students are enrolled on a part-time basis (no more than six semesterhours per semester). Credit can be earned for a maximum of 12 semesterhours over time. Students interested in taking more than 12 semester hoursmust make a formal application to the degree program. Please use the InternalAdmission Application Notification form available through camd.northeastern.edu/graduate. Special students who do not register for four consecutivesemesters (excluding summer semester) will be subject to review and possiblewithdrawal by CAMD Graduate Studies. Special Students are not eligible forawards or financial aid.

StudentStatusFor academic purposes, a graduatestudent is considered a full-timestudent if enrolled in a minimum ofeight semester hours of credit for thesemester, with the following exceptions:All graduate students who are formallyregistered in a continuation status,Master’s Research, or Master’sContinuation, may be consideredfull-time at the discretion of theirdepartment. It is ordinarily assumedthat such students will be in residence.Students in their last semester ofcoursework may be considered fulltime when enrolled in fewer than eightsemester hours to complete degreerequirements.Students enrolled in co-op areconsidered full-time. Internationalstudents are required and domesticstudents are encouraged to completetwo full semesters of classes beforeregistering for co-op (some programsrequire all students, regardless ofcitizenship status, to complete two fullterms in order to be eligible for co-op).NOTE: To be eligible for some typesof financial aid, the minimum full-timeload may be defined differently. Degree RegulationsREGISTRATIONStudents must register via the myNortheastern portal. Instructions for doingso are available on the myNortheastern portal: my.northeastern.edu. Studentsmust register within the dates and times listed on the Academic Calendar. Webregistration is available during the first and second weeks of the semester foradding and dropping courses. Students who fail to register within this time framewill not earn credit or a grade for the course(s) in question.Students are encouraged to obtain advisor approval of course selections eachsemester. This approval is required by some departments for all students.Students should check with individual departments for specific guidelines.WITHDRAWAL FROM COURSESTo withdraw from a course, a student must drop the course via themyNortheastern website within the deadlines as established by the Registrar.Please refer to the Academic Calendar posted at registrar.northeastern.edu/group/calendar.Tuition refunds and/or charges will be granted only on the basis of the date onwhich the course was dropped. Ceasing to attend a class or simply notifyingthe instructor of intention to withdraw from the course does not constitutean official withdrawal. Questions regarding refunds should be discussedwith Student Accounts. Student Accounts is located at 354 Richards Hall,617.373.2270. Refunds will be granted in accordance with the schedule as notedat s.LEAVE OF ABSENCEFull-time students who will not be involved in any academic endeavor fora period of time are required to petition through their department to theManager of Student Services for a leave of absence by completing the Requestfor Leave of Absence Form via the myNortheastern portal. CAMD GraduateStudies will not accept retroactive leave requests. Please note that if a studentis requesting a leave for medical reasons, a Medical Leave of Absence Formmust be completed. Students should contact University Health and CounselingServices at 617.373.2772. Their website is northeastern.edu/uhcs/forms.Leaves of absence generally are not approved for more than one calendaryear at a time. Further, a leave of absence is generally not appropriate for aninternational student on a student visa, unless the student is leaving the UnitedStates. Please consult with an international student advisor at the Office ofGlobal Services. Leaves of absence are not appropriate for master’s studentswho are working on a thesis but are away from the Northeastern campus.Except in the case of medical leaves, being on an approved leave of absencedoes not extend the amount of time allowed for (1) degree completion, or (2)the makeup of incomplete grades

TIME LIMITATIONFor the master’s degree, coursecredits earned in the programof graduate study are valid for amaximum of seven years.If students wish to apply for anextension of the time limit, they mustsubmit a petition to their departmentof study. The petition must includea detailed plan for completion ofall remaining degree requirements.The department must certifythat the content of each of thecourses has not changed since thetime the student completed thecourse. If deemed appropriate, thedepartment will recommend approvalof the extension to the College. TheSenior Associate Dean of GraduatePrograms and Strategic Initiativeshas final approval of time limitextensions.CONTINUITY OF REGISTRATIONStudents are expected to maintainsatisfactory progress toward theirintended degrees. Students whohave not completed their thesis afterhaving registered for the specifiednumber of thesis credits must registerand pay for Master’s Continuationeach subsequent semester untilthe thesis is approved by CAMDGraduate Studies and submitted toProQuest. Master’s Continuationwill carry no credit but will berecorded on the student transcriptwith the appropriate grade (S or U)for each semester of registration.All students must be registered inthe last semester of their program.Any student who does not attendNortheastern University for a periodof one year will be required to applyfor readmission.SATISFACTORY PROGRESSSatisfactory progress means satisfyingrequirements in the CAMD GraduateStudies General Regulations and inthe regulations specified by eachdepartment.CAMD Graduate Studies sets minimumstandards for all students to fulfill.Departments and programs may haveadditional requirements that exceedthose of the College. Graduatestudents must be making satisfactoryprogress, including working towardthe graduation requirement of acumulative grade point average of3.000 in their coursework and thetimely completion of coursework.Receipt of financial supportadministered by CAMD GraduateStudies is contingent on satisfactoryacademic progress toward thedegree and on meeting departmentspecific guidelines. CAMD GraduateStudies requires that all studentsreceiving awards will generally havetwo semesters to reach a 3.000cumulative GPA. Students whosecumulative GPA is below 3.000 willbe reviewed by their departmentsand by CAMD Graduate Studies, andmay have their funding terminated onrecommendation of their departmentor by decision of CAMD GraduateStudies in consultation with theirdepartment. Renewals of awardswill depend on the student makingsatisfactory academic progresstoward the degree, including a GPAof 3.000 or at the department’sminimum GPA if it is higher than theCAMD Graduate Studies minimum,and satisfactory performance of anyduties required by the award.9

Students enrolled in a program offering a cooperative (co-op) education optionmay be approved to participate. A minimum GPA of 3.000 is required at thetime the co-op job begins.ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTSA candidate for the master’s degree must complete a minimum of 30 semesterhours of graduate-level coursework and such other study as may be required bythe department in which the student is registered.To qualify for the degree, a minimum cumulative average of 3.000, equivalentto a grade of B, must be obtained. This average will be calculated eachsemester according to the grading system noted on page eleven and willexclude any transfer credits or repeated courses. A student who does notmake satisfactory progress toward degree requirements, as specified by theindividual department, may be terminated from the program.THESISTheses are required in some programs and should demonstrate the individual’scapacity to execute independent work based on original material. Registrationfor Thesis is required in most programs.Theses must be approved by the departmental graduate committee and, in casesin which a grade is required, must receive a grade of B (3.000) or better to beaccepted.CHANGES IN REQUIREMENTSThe continuing development of CAMD Graduate Studies forces regular revisionof curricula. When no hardship is imposed on the student because of changesand the facilities of the school permit, the student is expected to meet themost recent requirements. However, if it can be demonstrated to the CAMDGraduate Student Services Manager that doing so does impose a substantialhardship, the requirements of the year in which the student matriculated willbe applicable.APPLICATION FOR THE DIPLOMAApplication for the diploma is made by registering for commencement via themyNortheastern portal. Even though all other degree requirements may havebeen met, the commencement registration must be filed in order to assurethat the degree will be conferred on the appropriate graduation date. It is theresponsibility of the student to make sure that degree requirements have beenmet. Once degree requirements have been met, the student will be cleared forcommencement. Please note that there are no honors distinctions awarded atthe graduate level.GRADUATE AID AWARDSOnly those students who are registered in degree programs are eligible forgraduate aid. Award recipients will receive an official award letter from CAMDGraduate Studies. Please pay attention to this letter as it is an official contractwhich should be read carefully.

In order to maintain graduate aid,students must be making satisfactoryprogress toward their degrees.Graduate Student Scholarship(GSS) recipients must be in “fulltime” status and be registered for aminimum of eight semester hours.TRANSFER CREDITSA student may petition to transfer upto nine semester hours of his or herprogram using credits from anotherinstitution, provided that the creditstransferred consist of a grade of B(3.000) or better in graduate-levelcourses, have been earned at a U.S.accredited institution, and have notbeen used toward any other degree.Note: If approved by CAMD GraduateStudies, credits from NortheasternUniversity’s College of ProfessionalStudies (CPS) transfer to CAMDGraduate Studies as external creditsand count toward the nine semesterhour maximum of transfer credit. Ascourses at other institutions may notparallel courses at Northeastern, thestudent’s academic department willdetermine the number of semesterhours the external course will beworth. This calculation may resultin fewer semester hours than thecourse was assigned at the institutionat which the student completed thecourse. In addition, courses acceptedfor transfer credit must be no morethan five academic years old at thetime the student is admitted tograduate study. Courses older thanfive years will be accepted only inrare circumstances. Grades earned intransferred credits are not counted aspart of the overall grade point averageearned at Northeastern. Somedepartments accept fewer than ninetransfer credits. Please referto the appropriate department forspecific information. Students shouldpetition through their departments tothe CAMD Graduate Student ServicesManager by completing the Requestfor Transfer Credit Form available sAn official transcript must beattached to the petition.Generally, transfer credit is notallowed for students enrolled ingraduate certificate programs, exceptas outlined below:For students enrolled in theInformation Design and Visualizationor Experience Design certificateprograms, credits earned can beapplied to the respective master’sdegree if the student chooses not toreceive the graduate certificate.Students who have completed a CAMDgraduate certificate program canpetition to apply up to two courses or8 credits, whichever is greater, to afull CAMD master’s program.Students who are enrolled in aCAMD master’s program who wishto also complete a CAMD graduatecertificate can petition to have up totwo courses shared between bothprograms.Certificate students who wish totransition to a master’s program andmaster’s students who wish to add agraduate certificate to their programof study must consult with theiradvisor and CAMD Graduate StudentServices.CODE OF STUDENT CONDUCTStudents are expected to comportthemselves according to theUniversity’s Code of Student11

Conduct, which can be found here at northeastern. edu/osccr/code-ofstudent-conduct.ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICYNortheastern University views academic dishonesty as a very serious offense.Academic dishonesty includes cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, unauthorizedcollaboration, participation in academically dishonest activities, and facilitatingdishonesty, among other actions.The College of Arts, Media and Design supports the University’s AcademicIntegrity Policy and will report any acts of apparent academic dishonesty to theOffice of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution.The full text of Northeastern University’s Academic Integrity Policy can be foundonline at rading SystemThe student’s performance ingraduate courses will be gradedaccording to the following numericalequivalents:AA–4.0003.667B BB–3.3333.0002.667C CC–2.3332.0001.667F0.000These grades are given to thosestudents whose performance in acourse has been of the highestcaliber.These grades are given to studentswhose performance in a graduatelevel course is satisfactory.These grades are given to studentswhose performance in a course isbelow expectations for graduate levelwork.This grade indicates failure of thecourse and no credit will be received.Individual faculty members may choose not to use the plus and minusdesignations. If they elect to use non qualified ( /–) letter grades, they mustannounce this policy to the class at the beginning of the semester.

Note: Tuition charges are affiliated with a grade of W basedon the schedule noted on: nds.html*The “I” grade will be changed to a letter grade when the deficiency that led to the “I” is met to the satisfaction of, andin the manner prescribed by, the instructor of the course. The period for clearing an incomplete grade will be restrictedto one calendar year from the date of it first being recorded on the student’s permanent record.**Students may, with permission of the instructor and CAMD Graduate Studies, audit one class per term with noadditional charge. Permission is based on the availability of a seat in the class and is at the discretion of the instructorand the college. Students are permitted to petition from the end of course-add period to the end of the third weekof classes. Once a student opts to audit a course, the audit status of the course cannot be changed. Audits carry noacademic credits.***Requests for courses to be graded on an S/U basis must be agreed upon, in writing, with the instructor within thefirst two weeks of classes.GRADING POLICIESNo more than two courses or sixsemester hours of credit, whicheveris greater, may be repeated to satisfythe requirements for the degree.The most recent grade earned in acourse is the one used in calculatingthe overall GPA. Students are requiredto pay normal tuition charges for allrepeated course work.The period for clearing an incompletegrade and for changing a grade otherthan an incomplete or failure (F orU) is restricted to one calendar yearfrom the date it is first recorded onthe student’s permanent record.In calculating the overall cumulativeaverage, all graduate-level courseworkcompleted at the time of clearancefor graduation will be counted, unlessthe coursework was designated as notcounting at the time of registration orthe coursework was counted toward aprevious degree.CLASS CREDITSAll credits are entered as semesterhours.13

Northeastern University will endeavor to make available to its students a fineeducation and a stimulating and congenial environment. However, the qualityand rate of progress of an individual’s academic career and professionaladvancement upon completion of a degree or program are largely dependenton his or her own abilities, commitment, and effort. In many professionsand occupations, there are also requirements imposed by federal and statestatutes and regulatory agencies for certification and entry into a particularfield. These requirements may change while a student is enrolled in aprogram and may vary from state to state or country to country. Although theuniversity stands ready to help its students find out about requirements andchanges in them, it is the student’s responsibility to initiate the inquiry.EMERGENCY CLOSING OF THE UNIVERSITYNortheastern University posts emergency announcements, including news ofweather-related closings, on its homepage and notifies members of thecommunity individually through the NU ALERT system. In addition, theuniversity has made arrangements to notify students, faculty, and staff byradio and television when it becomes necessary to cancel classes becauseof extremely inclement weather. AM stations WBZ (1030), WILD (1090), andWRKO (680) and FM station WBUR (90.9) are the radio stations authorizedto announce the university’s decision to close. Television stations WBZ-TV4,WCVB-TV5, and WHDH-TV7 will also report cancellations. Since instructionaltelevision courses originate from live or broadcast facilities at the university,neither classes nor the courier service operates when the university is closed.Please listen to radio or television to determine whether the university will beclosed.If a storm occurs at night, the announcement of the university closing is givento the radio stations at approximately 6 a.m. Classes are generally canceledfor the entire day and evening at all campus locations unless stated otherwise.When a storm begins late in the day, cancellations for evening classes may beannounced.
